I take back what I wrote last October, that must have been a flash in the pan from the staff. Recent visits compel me to re post.
The service is at best mediocre; the staff simply have no enthusiasm whatsoever so expect a long wait at the bar while they check their mobiles and discuss trivia among themselves.
They often have an ale on, but this is a lager pub so the ale is more often than not undrinkable.
The food though not inedible is far from appetising and also expect longs waits for it. Like many places now they seem to think is chic to serve the food on an old plank of wood, Whats wrong with plates all of a sudden?
All in all a nice garden in the middle of town, and its popular with the kids, but hardly a serious pub

Not that bad, someone has obviously had a go at training the staff and achieved a modicum of success. They also have a cask ale available now which is also a step in the right direction. Nice garden area for during the day ( with heaters and canopies to keep out the inclement weather). During the evenings and especially at weekends, the clientele become more youthful and purile but its getting better.

An interesting place smack bang in the centre of Taunton.
It has a rather pleasant outside area and that for me is the main attraction of the place. Inside it is a complicated layout all on different levels.
More of a youngsters place really so we had one and then left.

5/10

Totally agree with previous comments re pub life in Taunton- its shockingly bad for the county town-service always seems to be third rate, staff disinterested and nowhere in the centre of town with a bit of character and atmosphere. It is a dead zone with very little buzz except for a couple exceptons-strange really as Taunton has lofty aspirations with project Taunton being rolled out as the start of a new dawn for growth and vibrancy in the town as a tumbleweed rolls through the centre........

Visited this place after 15 years away from Taunton...Used to drink here all the time when it was Millers...not sure what to make of it now...maybe it's me getting old, but no atmosphere and no crack...Staff were going through the motions, garden still a plus but that's about it...have to say, Taunton now like dawn of the dead, all decent pubs closed or re-branded by some crappy chain, for a county town with a population of 60k odd, somebody should seize the initiative, the town is crying out for a decent boozer (or 5)....At least 15 years ago you had a choice of at least 5 ok pubs for a bit of a night out, now? Maybe one, two at most from what I can see...sad state of affairs for a once thriving town...

Slow incompetemt service from bored disintested staff.
Always seems crowded but I guess that's just the garden.
As said before, no ales.

Been in here a few times now and have recently been very disappointed with the staff, they are useless. The place itself is very nice and is let down by incredibly incompetent bar staff

i think this is a fantastic place at the moment, very ingenious to have a cocktail car in the garden area, great atmosphere on a saturday night, loovely old building with nooks and crannies.

Oh...this bar is definately all about the beer garden! And it is lovely. The food menu isn't bad at all, and the addition of a Thai menu is slightly odd, but works anyway as it's damn tasty food. The drinks are a bit old fashioned, and I've always thought the staff didn't seem terribly professional, but it's a inoffensive nice little bar.

nice little pub with a decent food menu

If the weather is nice, you can enjoy a drink in the garden. In that sense, it really is an oasis. As pointed out below, no ales.

Nice looking pub tucked in behind Debenhams dept store. Used to be called "Millers" and was never any good then.
Giving an old pub a new name suggests desparation, but nevertheless I gave it a try.
Walked in. No real ales. Walked out.
