user reviews of the Roebuck Inn, Winchester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

First visit - bit of a stereo-type in projecting 'Victorian ' image'. But very friendly and welcoming. Food clearly very popular as restaurant area full and many other tables booked even those in the pub area.

Completely refurbished into an off the shelf B&Q derived template pub. So now you have uniform t-shirts for the staff, corporate-quirky pen chalk signs and the ubiquitous 5 lunch meal signs that details your at a Greene king retirement home during the day style generic pub.

Beer is all Greeneking when i visited (even the GK owned sub-brands), Hooky best apparently was due soon - i had to drink lager... Staff where friendly and considerate, food as expected for a place that can do a meal and a pint for 5 was really average - must have some seriously large freezers and a tiny kitchen microwave.

Fine if you like a standard GK experience, but so unremarkable, there are many, many better pubs in a 5 mile radius - hell go into town and get a pizza..

Not a bad little boozer. Bit quiet, but hey ho. Friendly licensee and the beer was good to.

I visited this pub early July this year. Myself and a friend visited on a Sunday night (about 8pm) looking for some grub. The decor was attractive enough, wooden floors, pleasing tables and seats as other reviews have mentioned.

Alas this is where the positives cease. The pub felt like a graveyard, the only punters were on the other side of the bar playing Poker, (a game the barman insisted we join) which suffice to say, didn't happen (it was overtly obvious we were looking to order food, not lose our money to the locals and their cards.)

The range of ales was poor, there were two maximum, other lagers, ciders and wines were surely available but I didn't take much notice of the selection. I was more concerned with the frankly dreadful pint of Abbot Ale I'd been served; a head on it, strangely watery, and amazingly it tasted carbonated! Just awful, (I suspect some tampering.)

We ordered two roast dinners, which arrived in good time but now I wish they hadn't. The beef was tough, the turkey dry, the potatoes hard, the parsnips passable. But the stand-out fixture on our plates were the 'from-frozen' (and still a bit frozen) assorted small vegetetables; sweetcorn, peas, carrots, all abysmal. The gravy was the best bit but still only tasted like a waterd-down 'Bisto'. In addition, the menu promised Yorkshire Puddings with the meal which never materialised. Poor. The price was reasonable for a good meal, but considering what we received it was terrible value for money.

Come paying for the meal the barman had cheek enough to expect a tip for his sorry services. A bad evening was had all round, I reccommend this pub to no-one.

Oh and if you'd like to know how The Roebuck Inn presented their Roast Dinners on the menu, you can do just that! Search 'Roast Dinner' on Google Images and their photo is the penultimate picture on the top row. Note it's source is another bar entirely (which to my knowledge has no afilliation with The Roebuck whatsoever).

Good Pub Grub. Great Quiz too. Staff were friendly. Quiet but nice atmosphere, well worth an evening visit. The 'Curry Night' on Thursdays where you get a Curry for 5 is a good deal too. Reasonable prices.

Attractive looking pub - recently refurbished? 4 handpumps with 2 non GK beers on. I tried the Bowman 'Swift One' which was very good. There is a firm emphasis on food with an extensive but reasonably priced menu. I visited in the evening but was able to persuade them to make me a sandwich which was big and tasty, and served with grated roasted parsnips (I think).

Not as homely as the nearby Fulflood Arms, but worth a visit.

Must agree with Max, although one of the many Greedy King sites in town only IPA shows that. Great pint of Old Hooky and tried a half of Holdens Golden Glow. Good atmosphere to match and try the pork pie, perfect after work food!

What a suprise!!! Last time I went in here it was like gods waiting room. Now wooden floors, big old oak tables and leather chesterfields have taken over 4 real ales and a great selection of food. Great pub worth a visit any time!!!
