quiet & run down, stinks like a ash tray! staff could clearly be smokeing in the kitchen so I shall avoid eating here!

Garlic mushrooms, steak and stilton pie with fresh veg, bottle of chilled wine or pint of real ale? Who could ask for more? It was Fab. thank you so much, wish I could have a birthday dinner once a week! Am so full, couldn't even manage a wafer thin mint! Thank you so much friendly landlady and lovely chef! Will visit again very, very soon. x

Reasonable pub, though it did have a tired feel to it and the ale was okay rather than good.

I can report two years on from the last review that this is still a great pub; the food is good too....

An excellent pub with friendly staff and great beer.

As Telford Wilkins Galbraith noted in his recent review, the Ship is a superb, unaffected country pub. This is a place of conversation, conviviality, fine cask ale, and, no doubt, delicious wholesome country fare. The landlady is a fine, chatty, diligent host, and was quite happy to engage in arcane discussion with two strangers. The ale choice is adventurous, though sticking within sensible strength bounds for a pub that requires either a bipeds' best efforts or a motorized chariot. In an area blessed with fine pubs (and breweries), the Ship stand out as one of the most authentic. This is a pub of its community, but one that extends the warmest of welcomes to those from beyond the bounds of Bishops Sutton.

A good, honest, down-to-earth country community local. There is no obvious over-emphasising of food, as is so often the case nowadays, and there is still room for the good old drinker. A friendly landlady presides over a comfortable bar in the middle, and at either end there is a large seating area that can accommodate a surprisingly large number of punters. The night I was there it was their Annual quiz night - which was a massive hit with the locals who had crammed into the pub to show off their knowledge (or lack of it!). I was amazed, although sadly for a Sunday evening this was not representative of the usual custom which would struggle to fill half let alone all the seats! Still, the place seems to have a loyal following and justifiably so.
Ale-wise, up to 4 are available, and choices are varied judging by the clips on display. Palmers Copper Ale was absolutely superb, as was an offering from the Goddards brewery.
Don't mess with the formula, as it seems to be spot on right now, and one that fewer rural retreats are following.

We've just been for a meal at the Ship and can thoroughly recommend it as an unpretentious country pub. The beer is good - we both drank Invincible this time although the choice of beers changes regularly. The menu has a selection of traditional pub food with specials on a blackboard - nothing really adventurous but when the food arrives you get what you expected - well cooked and tasty. If you are looking for a gastro-pub then the Ship may not be for you but if a country pub with a friendly welcome and a warm log fire sounds attractive then The Ship is well worth a try.

Tried the Ship for lunch as it has changed hands a few times since we last visited, nice welcome ,nice and clean, lunch was not good value for money, the steak and ale was good but not enough of it for the price, plus the peas with my pie and chips were undercooked ,sorry thumbs down.will have to keep searching.

We stumbled upon this pub on our journey home from a Devon holiday on Saturday. We had a fantastic lunch, Their hand carved ham is local and still had the on the bottom of the thick slices and is served with loads of chips & two perfectly cooked fried eggs. The burgers are made by the local butcher and they taste divine, no frozen ding ding meals in this pub. The Thatchers cider was perfectly chilled and they have guest beers which I was given a taste of each for free. The couple that run are really lovely and welcoming people, nothing is too much trouble. The pub is spotlessly clean especially the toilets. It's not an all day pub because they have no passing trade but so worth visiting.
