Had the misfortune to go in here a few times lately with friends for a few pints it don't seem too bad but but I would not chose to go here out of choice its a typical estate type pub bit rowdy & loud with non stop swearing. The staff seem to have worse manners than most of the customers No please or thank you when serving at the bar and just bung your food on the table and say there you go?.. There is still a few large screen TVs for showing football & sport when there's sport on and free Wi-Fi that's about the only saving grace I could find. There is also Three hand Pumps available with Green King IPA on Two And the famous no named bitter on the third I've tried the Ales on a few occasions but never found it in good condition as it seems to be more of a lager drinkers Pub. Prices are reasonable for Ales & Food typical G K selection on the Menu.

An ok pub now the football is back being shown. Food average at best. No trouble but little atmosphere. Alright for a quick one before heading to Muswell hill or over the road. Some bright spark decided way back not to screen any live sport hence driving 80% of the drinkers across the road to Keenans (a good pub). so a lot of good spending customers haven't returned Also employing bar staff who are unable to understand english is not very intelligent. Who don't understand what 'a large one' is etc etc. Bizarre. Its as if whoever is now in charge wants to have no customers.

This pub was always the bad boy of N10 and altercations and bar-wide punch-ups were not uncommon. Part of the responsibility for this lies with Greene King who have used this pub as a training ground rather than install a manager with a vested interest in the pub.

Rather than tackle the anti-social elements, the pub has removed the pool table and does not show Sky Sports in the hope that the unsavoury element will go elsewhere. It has worked - the unruly crowd has left - but one wonders how long this relatively large premises will survive on the very small number of punters left.

They've tried to go upmarket - low level lighting - a chips with everything menu - but they have a bad reputation to live down and that takes some time. I'm not sure Greene King will have the patience.

Ale wise they haven't got the foresight to install more than IPA which is served through some fancy sort of pump designed to make it look more akin to the tasteless lagers. Staff wise it is all eastern european - unfriendly, ill-informed and just damn cold.

If Greene King had the nous they'd relaunch this pub as the foremost pub for decent beer at the arse end of Muswell Hill - and they would follow that up with some serious local marketing (how much would it cost to leaflet the surrounding neighbourhood ?). As it is - they've made a half-hearted effort and the majority of the locale still know if as a pub for a punch-up.

This Pub was closed for much needed refurbishment over the last few weeks but has now been redecorated & reopened. I Had a few pints in here on Saturday evening and it seems much better than before by 100%. Gone are the Pool Table & Dart board on the left hand side as you walk in which has been made into a much better quieter Seating Drinking & eating area making the place feel much more friendly and less rough. I found the staff and other customers very welcoming & polite. Theres still a few large screen TVs for football Etc so its best avoided when theres sport on if your going in for a meal or quite group meeting. Theres Three hand Pumps available with Green King IPA on Two And Old Speckled Hen on the other Prices are very reasonable for Ales & Food with a good selection on the Menu.
I would say its definitely worth a visit if passing and I will call in again when I'm passing

I went in here a few Months back that was a bad mistake there was only around five other People in and place at around 20.00 Hrs on a Saturday night was a Absolute dive really filthy & run down. Music was on full blast it was so loud it was distorted had trouble hearing staff there was No decent Ales on at all. They sell is Abbot which I tried but it was disgusting so I left it and walked out went too across road. Definitely got worse since I last went in here.

It's definitely a 'geezer' pub. I don't think it's as rough as it was, but I can see why it can be a little intimidating. Beer is crap if you're into real ales. They occasionally experiment with the odd barrel of 'Abbott', but I don't think the staff know how to keep them. Weird thing is they do a roaring trade in the bottled beers.
It's the nearest thing to a local for me, so I wander in 4 or 5 times a month. It's always the same guys there, sitting in exactly the same place as they were the last time I visited. But isn't that what a local is all about?

One of North London's more hostile pubs - full of low-lifes. Would avoid like the plague. Staff seem nice enough and shows the football on loads of screens - but the customers!!!!

Ive been going to The Minstrel Boy, on and off, for about a year and I have to admit to being a fan. Friendly staff and the landlord is nice enough.

The pub has plenty of TV screens, on which every sport conceivable is aired. There is also a pool table and dart board.

The prices are reasonable and the lager/cider is served to a high standard.

As pubs go I dont think that anyone would grumble if this was their local.

Nice Old style Pub. Nearest good Traditional style Pub to Muswell Hill that hasn't been wreaked by the Gastro foodie brigade. Much better when theres no sport Blasting out on the telly. Has some good Real Ales on tap. And I must agree it seems to have definitely Improved over the last few years.

Not too bad Pub now since the smoking ban has made it better. Seems to have improved much in the last two years since I last went in here. Good & reasonable Prices for a Pub near Muswell Hill and it has not been ruined and turned into one of those awful gastro Pubs like most the Pubs in Muswell Hill.
