user reviews of the Windmill Tavern, Waterloo

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I have been here before but it was quiet unmemorable, as was my latest visit late on Saturday evening.

4 beers on the pumps so I opted for a pint of Young's, Humming bird @ 4.2%. Service was quick but I found the barman slightly rude and abrupt.

It seemed pretty busy inside, the kitchen was still open and the food looked very decent.

I took my pint and went and sat outside as the evening was warm.

Friendly pub but doesn’t really do it for me.

Quality. Quality. I think we all file in like carrages behind trainman. With the smoky platforms. Capital One.

In response to Harryconner98 back in February, it is a pub first and fore most. If you wanted to order Thai food, ask one of the Thai waitresses walking in and out the place. The bar serves beer. The old girl (over 40 I suppose is old to some people) has always been pleasant swift and accommodating; pl.us she hides the fact very well that she's very deaf. I've known Mary for years and she's one of London special bar maids; always good at her job. If you have problems getting served Harry, buy some lifts for your shoes shorty or stand on a box. If you want a hamburger, piss off up to MacDonald's and buy one there you big kid. Pub's like the Windmill are for grown ups. Grow up! Now I've got that out the way, I can honestly say that I've been drinking here since the War and it's still one of the best pubs in London. And great for sitting outside and enjoying a smoke, particularly in my case of a cigar, and watching the world pass slowly by. Can't be bettered this side of the River.

New thai menu with a cracking lunch deal, starter, main & rice for only 7.50! Can't get better than that! Specially when they have Sky Sports and really friendly staff. Have spotted a few celebs in there too, well worth popping in for a beer.....or a few!

Absolutely awful service. I visited for the first time the other day, and went to the bar to see the food menu. The elderly lady serving gave sarcastic responses, and was extremely short tempered, saying 'this is a pub, not a restaurant!' (I was only trying to order a hamburger with a pint!). After this, I decided not to even bother ordering food from there. It was the worst pub service I've had in years, and I've been to a few!
harryconner98 - 26 Feb 2012 20:00
Popped in here on new years eve,was quite impressed that they weren't charging to get in,unfortunately I found out why when I ordered my pint of Strongbow which had been hiked up by 70pence a pint from 3.50 to 4.20 pint. They hadn't even changed the tarriff on the wall, talk about cashing in,even the barman seemed embarrassed!

This is a great pub. I very much enjoy going there and not just for the sports, the Thai food is very good value and always looks fresh & appealing. The ales have all always been available when I have been there and the guys who serve them are really chirpy chaps who you can have a bit of banter with. They also have a good wine list so it's great for popping into for post & pre-theatre bevvies. The theatre poster decor on the ceiling and the pictures of famous actors on the walls always keep us amused trying to name as many as we can....

I can't see why anyone would go here, except perhaps for the convenience of the location, its outdoor tables in warm weather, or to watch bigscreen sport.

I went last Monday evening, about 7.30pm, and it was full enough for there to be few tables free. Of three bitters available on tap, one was already off by the time we arrived, and another was off by the time we were ready for a second pint. What sort of pub cannot keep two or three beers properly stocked on a relatively quiet weekday (Monday) night?

There's nothing really *wrong* with the place, I just can't see why anyone would go here instead of to some of the nearby alternatives, such as the excellent King's Head

From reading the reviews you'd think this was some insane sports bar - which i guess it may well be if the footy is on. But i went on a Friday night and it was nice to find a pub in this area that wasn't completely and utterly rammed. You could get served quickly at the bar by friendly bar staff.

Doom Bar on tap which tasted OK, not amazing.

Not a bad pub overall, although not quite as good as the Stage Door round the corner (although that pub is a little more brown / old man so maybe if you're on a date, go to the windmill, or a restaurant!).

Friendly bar staff, which is always good. Unfortunately there was loads of football on loads of screens when I went in last week. Not the most inspiring decor - left me feeling a little cold, and our seats were hard! I do like a pint of Doombar, but it was off that night. I can't remember the 2 others. One tasted awful, and the other was quite okay.

When the football ended, the drunk suits left us to an emptyish uninspiring pub. Definitely not offensive, but not somewhere I'd think of visiting again

I like this place, quite darkish inside, bare floorboards, friendly, laid back atmosphere. Been in a couple of times recently - fri and sat nights and felt quite at home.
iannfa - 4 Oct 2010 22:08
Owned by the same people as The RIng 200 yards down the road, this pub has a rather artificial air and the same wall-to-wall grey decor as its sister pub, and an even less inspiring choice of ales - Doom Bar and Ringwood Best all hat they offer. On the upside, they were showing the Champions League football and we were perched on the bar without difficulty. Like The Ring, it also seems to do a brisk trade in Thai food which is presumably why most people visit it. Definitely lacking in character or atmosphere however; Don't get me wrong, I like the colour grey - just not terribly fond of it as an interior colour.
ChrisP87 - 21 Apr 2010 11:57
A first rate pub, very handy for both Waterloo and Southwark. Great Sky coverage. Good, friendly staff. Good beer and food. Great for pre or post theatre drink.
BARONVONBEERBARREL - 2 Jan 2010 22:31
Just noticed this laughingly enter the 'top10'. Hadn't bothered to comment after my single visit as there is nothing of note to report, but I feel I should lest people seek it out. Fairly characterless box of a bar at the front, we were served 3.30 pints of Doombar from an uninspiring choice across the 3 handpumps by an antipodean barman devoid of personality. They had a Sky match showing at the front, didn't bother investigating the rear room. Must've been around halloween as some awful woman was organising her kid to go round with a 'trick or treat' begging bucket & then drinking the proceeds at the cafe style tables on front pavement (she was seen doing the same elsewhere). I won't be back.

One of the very best pubs around; great bar service, good atmosphere and clean. Highly recommended.
CityBobby - 30 Dec 2009 12:48
The pie and mash shop referred to by alexlaird50 was next door. Think you'll find it's now a Chinese called Culture.
TiaMariaJim - 21 Sep 2009 10:41
Close old chap;nextdoor in fact. It's now the wonderful Chinese resturant and well worth using;clean, very good food, cheap and lovely girl waitressess. And a very better bet for eating than the in-house Thai food at the Windmill it self; twice I've tried it and sat counting the sparingly offerings upon my plate. Certainly a skinny Budda bar catering manager.
No sir, enjoy the Windmill by all means; very good atmosphere, friendly staff, excellent sport tv screen coverage and well maintained beer, but slip next door for your food. And return later to enjoy the drink again.
MRLONDON - 14 Aug 2009 10:52
can anyone tell me if The Winmill in The Cut Waterloo was previously the site of a pie and mash shop a few years back..
alexlaird50 - 26 Jul 2009 20:28
An enjoyable pint of good heat and thirst quenching Cider here last night;sitting outside in the late evening sunny weather with good company and banter.
Lovely pub.
DEPTFORDDUTCH - 2 Jul 2009 09:08
Yep, liked this one. Again like the Ring further down the Cut, the Windmill Tavern has a modern dcor but not too modern and is festooned with black and white photos, this time of actors due to its proximity to the Old & Young Vics. Its a two room pub either side of a central serving area, with the back room being reached by an archway to the left of the bar. The enormous hanging wall mirror gives the front bar a light and airy feel and there is an outside bench area under an awning to the front of the pub. As mentioned below the beer choice is not brilliant, but there was Speckled Hen and Sharps Doombar on yesterday which were perfectly pleasant.
Gann - 16 May 2009 12:34
Reasonably smart two-bar pub, with numerous photographs of actors adorning the walls. Limited real ale selection, but the Pedigree was fine (if rather expensive).
rpadam - 24 Feb 2009 00:03
A marvellous place to spend a long afternoon and evening within or with out. Plenty of seating, covered and warm with heaters for smokers. Well served beer. Great staff; especially Mary. An Actor laddies paradise pub between the Old & Young Vics.
anonymous - 25 Sep 2008 09:40
must say great pub,the services is excellent.good buncch behind the jump,.
flipper75 - 13 Jun 2008 01:07
First time back here for about 6 months and was a very pleasant evening. Beer and service were good but the decor and layout are what I really like about this place.

One of the best pubs in this area.

Badgers - 25 Jan 2008 14:10
Honestly, a bit affected. Go if you want to be seen.
Mr.Matt - 19 Nov 2007 02:50
For such a big pub the gents was a bit on the small side but it looked great with funky decor and furniture, the bar top was a bit high and i'm 6.1"! on the plus side i had the best meal in ages there(thai) and the bird who served it was well fit, i tried it on but she wasnt having any of it! she was very proffesional and friendly all the same.
thisismyusername - 9 Nov 2007 23:24
A bit poncey but, irrespective, still a decent boozer if you like that scene.
HLC - 6 Oct 2007 13:58
Best pub in the area by a long way.
The service is excellent, food and beer good as well.
A proper pub
anonymous - 28 Sep 2007 16:55
Refurb! open again in Sept according to the signs.
anonymous - 10 Aug 2007 08:33
Currently closed and gutted. Signage removed from the outside. Refurb or relaunch???
Zaphod - 7 Aug 2007 15:43
Nice pub, you can regularly spot a c-lister or 2 in here, hey, actors drink too you know! have a few in here and then check out the noodle bar next door, top notch food.
DavidWaspnest - 12 Jul 2007 16:43
This is a wonderful pub! I dived in this afternoon and found Wadworth 6X on tap, I must say that I haven't tried it in years (to be honest I haven't seen it around which is a crying shame). It was absolutely wonderful! I haven't enjoyed a single pint like this in years. So much so, that I actually mentioned it on returning my empty glass to the bar on leaving to the pleasant young Irish girl behind the bar. Having read the previous comments about Wadsworth being Eggy, I'd take it as a one off, dodgey serving and unavoidable. I've found the staff here always pleasant and quick on the serve. Plus a good sign in any decent pub, rushing back and forth checking the presentation of the beer from cellar to pump. Well worth a visit any time!
anonymous - 5 Apr 2007 18:47
Wadworth 6X tainted with an eggy aroma and taste? In my experience that's what it normally tastes like these days! (Rumour has it that it doesn't travel as opposed to it just being not a very nice beer anymore!)
Norealaleinorpington - 26 Mar 2007 17:11
Dropped in for a swift pint a few weeks ago. Was pleased to see Wadworth 6X on cask, but sadly it was tainted with eggy aroma and taste.

Bar staff took it back and changed it for a pint of Pride, but not without expressing doubt as to my assessment. 'They'll be complaining the brandy's too spicy next week', said the barman to a regular.

No, next week I'll be drinking elsewhere.
quiff - 26 Mar 2007 17:05
Best pub in Waterloo by a long way.
Fantastic service.

I STARTED DRINKING HERE DURING THE WAR, WHEN THE MARKET WAS IN FULL SWING OUTSIDE; SADLY NOW GONE THE WAY OF ALL GOOD THINGS. IN THE 1960S & 1970S THIS PLACE WAS ONLY EVER BUSY IN THE EVENING AT THAT. I USED TO BE FASCINATED DRINKING HERE IN THE ONE TIME WOODEN PANNELLED FRONT BAR LOOKING AT THE PUB SCENE. THERE WOULD BE ONE FELLA, A COFFIN DODGER ON ONE SIDE. ANOTHER ON THE OTHER AND ONE AT THE DOOR. ALL DRINKING IN DEAD SILENCE. NO COMMENTS, NO HELLO, IT WAS A WAITING ROOM FOR DEATH. THE ONLY LIFE WAS A VISIT BY TOMMY GODFREY, A LOCAL FACE AND CHARACTER ACTOR, (THE BUS CONDUCTOR IN "PASSPORT TO PIMLICO" & THE JANITOR IN "ONLY WHEN I LAUGH", HE WAS THE ONLY BIT OF LIFE IN THE PLACE. SINCE THE IRISH "FIRM" HAVE TAKEN OVER, IT'S BLOODY MARVELLOUS! THEY'VE KNOCKED THE TWO BARS TOGETHER AND HAVE A MASSIVE SCREEN FOR FOOTBALL AND RACING ON. THE PUB'S VERY CLEAN. THE STAFF, MARY, THE YOUNG SPEEDY IRISH GIRL AND THE FELLAS ARE VERY, VERY FRIENDLY AND FUN. IT'S ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO VISIT AND THE BEERS ARE PROPERLY PULLED.
A TIP TOP PLACE TO VISIT. HOW COULD ANYONE SAY ANYTHING ELSE? JUST LOOK AT THE MIX OF YOUNG, OLD, AND GOOD LOOKING PEOPLE. I EVEN HAD A DRINK WITH JOHNNY VEGAS A FEW MONTHS BACK AND NOBODY MADE A FUSS. MAKE A DASH FOR THE CUT!
DEPTFORDDUTCH - 5 Oct 2006 20:16
Have been here a couple of times, once during the day and the other at night.
During the day the place is dead apart from some ex-London gangster types skipping from bar to toilet every ten minutes for cocaine fixes. At night the place is frequented by young local Kings College crowd and suits.Thai food not bad and reasonably priced, wine list very average and over-priced, considering the historical "wine quotes" throughout the pub.Bar staff friendly and efficient,The little Irish barmaid the quickest I've seen in London. The Irish owner was there during my daytime visit and chose to ignore the obvious "toilet activity".Seemed quite cocky and was telling off one of the staff over a cleanliness issue.Won't be back I'm afraid.
anonymous - 9 Jul 2006 10:30
A nice boozer this. Beer us usually pretty good with Spitfire being my first option! Staff are friendly and never had to wait long to be served. Always seem to have 3 or 4 staff at least.

Eaten there once and its been pretty good although I have heard it has its off days. But pretty good value if you like Thai.

They are an honest bunch too. My mate very atupidly left his laptop bag in there, with his ipod in there too! He thought hed lost it all, but at 11am the next morning he got a phonecall saying they had his bag. It was great to hear that there are still some decent people in London.

Id recommomend this place, good mixture of lagers and ales, and good food. Oh and Johnny Vegas was in there last time I was in!
selondoner - 7 Jun 2006 16:39
Good gaff this,...decently dark decor and brilliant lighting,..more like a ruby lounge than a Ruby Lounge.

Rude fruity
kmcs - 24 Aug 2005 12:22
Not bad beer but the bar takes up too much space meaning there is a lot less tables than you would expect and it can get crowded easily. Good celeb spotting though as its by the Old Vic
monkeyDave - 5 May 2005 20:42
Ale quality & staff attitude variable but there is usually a lively & friendly clientele. Speed of sevice is generally slow.
mally - 4 Apr 2005 18:02
Not such a bad pub but the central bar is a bit of a pain, slowing service down and the beer is not always up to scratch. Be wary of going if Millwall are playing. A better bet is the Stage Door especially if you prefer home cooked pub food to Thai.
thorby - 6 Dec 2004 17:23
Handily situated for Waterloo Station and the Old Vic Theatre. Limited selection of bitters but the lager was served as it should be. Nicely decorated with photos of actors who have appeared across the road (and probably sought refreshment in this place), though the life-sized Elvis figure in the corner is slightly disconcerting. Fairly bustling atmosphere and friendly staff - nice one.
Mr Lash - 15 Nov 2004 11:20
Great pub, Good food... If you do one think this weekend visit the Sunday night sing a long!

Julia - 28 Oct 2004 14:35
I absolutely love this pub, the food is great the atmosphere wonderful. I can't stop recommending it to anyone who fancies a change.
Sassy - 20 May 2004 20:48
This place is convenient for the theatre, and the trains.
Melanie - 8 Jan 2004 15:54
Thai food still excellent, nice atmosphere, able to seat & have a beer rather than at Fire Station where they are always taken
Mike - 18 Dec 2003 14:07
coolpub top beer and the landlord fantastic top chuckle.
tommy-tucker - 20 Aug 2003 00:21
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, not too crowded and the best thai pub food in London.
