user reviews of the Winchester, Bournemouth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Impressive old building, quite luxurious decor. A lot of the events held here are not to my taste, and can get unpleasantly busy. But have really enjoyed the burlesque/vaudeville nights, masquerade balls, speakeasys, electro swing, rock bands, poetry, art, dollyrocker etc nights. Nice touches here and there too, cupcakes for sale or a hat-swap table.

I don't think anyone would want to go here when there is nothing on. As noted, the drink situation is completely haphazard.

I'm not kidding about the lighting either. I was once smacked in the occipital lobe by a pedalboard being carried through the gloom.

I have never been to a pub with a more obnoxious landlord, or staff who quite obviously don't want to be there. Even some of the punters were thoroughly repulsive, thinking they'd been given carte blanche to act like the biggest tw@ts in the world. The only decent thing was the music, both from DJs and live bands, everything else made me want to put the place out of it's misery.

Converted auction house which mainly exists to serve up live music and the less mainstream DJ's. Beer situation intermittent.
Occasionally have ales, but not well kept. Good bottled beers have also been spotted -- bring back Brew Dog! Stygianly dark!

As a music venue this is excellent, but as a pub it's utter rubbish.

Congratulations to the drinkers below who managed to order Ringwood Best and Solar Power. On the numerous occasions I've been in now there have been no ales on.

Not a problem though, I just nip across the block to the Goat & Tricycle between bands.

Not sure what to make of this pub. Its coining in on the pink pound of the gay scene which it bang in the middle of location wise. Lots of space, very tall ceiling and marble, guess it was an old bank or something? Loads of squishy leather sofas, but they are not comfy on your back.

Bar stuff are quite clueless and would rather use their mobile phone rather than take your order correctly. Since when did a pint of Solar Power ale mean 3/4 pint of Soda Water? They also had NO gin? whats that about?

Currently throughout August local caberet stars Diane and Lee perform on Wednesday nights which make it worth going, otherwise I think it would be quite dull.

Ringwood Best is off more than it is on. There is no sort of commitment to real ale in this place, especially when they can push nitro keg boddies at 3.00 a pint. As Paul says, The Porterhouse is a much better bet. Full range of Ringwood beers there plus whatever seasonal beer is going.

Went to this pub once. Never again.Noisy and only has Ringwood Best and it was 2.70 a pint. Rip off!! You can go up the road to the Porterhouse and get it for 2.45 and it tastes better there as it is a Ringwood pub.

Now open as The Winchester. Went for a quick pint there yesterday evening whilst waiting for the Goat around the corner to open. Must say I was very impressed by the place, very chilled out, classy decor, very comfy sofas; my only complaint being the one real ale (Ringwood best) had run out.
Will definately go back there!
