user reviews of the Cliftonville Inn, Hove

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Small by Wetherspoon's standards with a rather square lounge with the bar on the left hand side. They have squeezed in the maximum amount of chairs and tables as possible making it a bit cramped. However it had the usual good selection of real ales at a very reasonable price

Been here before didn't like it, but heard it was in Good Beer Guide, so gave it Another try. Had good selection of ales, tried Long Blond and a really nice Hop Head from Dark Star. They had some darker ales also but it was a sunny day. Sat outside and watched the world go by, staff pretty good also. Think they have new management since my last visit which might explain the difference.

went in for a couple on feb 1st, cotleigh snowy v.naice, kings old good as well.although some of the clientele makes you think of the cantina on Mos Eisley, the beer is well kept and the staff are pleasant enough.

Taken my old father in here for breakfast several times. I've given up the cooked stuff, have to watch the waistline! I can recommend the porridge though.
The staff in the morning are friendly and efficient.

Never actually been in for a drink but whenever I've walked past it seems there is always a bunch of old blokes with noses like Alex Ferguson putting the world to rights and singing incoherently.

Usual array of Wetherspoon down & outs were downing their pints as I has my excellent Full English Breakfast (9.15 am!).

Central location with well kept beer and usual great variety. Found it relaxing with plenty of seating. Only gripe is the lack of serving staff meaning long waiting times, even early in the day. The company should invest in staff, to improve customer satisfaction and give the current staff a break.
sirlunchalot - 20 Feb 2011 15:38
great 'spoons, but it does smell a bit. at any time of day.
kidsmoke - 29 Jun 2010 14:01
The Brighthelm in West Street could learn a lot from this Wetherspoon's outlet. Vastly improved service over the last 12 months, kept clean, well-presented and tasty food: everything that the Brighthelm falls down on
brighton_toffee - 20 Oct 2009 11:19
Probably one of the best Wetherspoons we have visited. Welton and Kings beers at great value prices, the barman was very professional, the place was clean and tidy and didnt seem to attract low life like many others. We cant comment on the food but the beer quality was spot on.

Smaller than most Wetherspoons. It is located in a pedestrianised part of Hove. A good choice of local beers, particularly Weltons. Since I was in there for breakfast, I can't comment on any of the beers. At the time I was there it was mainly full of the usual old crones that frequent Wetherspoon's pubs but it was comfortable all the same.
boozers_knows - 27 Apr 2009 20:34
As with all Wetherspoons I've visited, you do have to wait a bit(well, sometimes quite a bit) longer to be served. You can't have it all though,it's just such good value.
I like the breakfast. The Cliftonville's is particularly good.Noticably better than the one served at Brighton Marina, which is "OK".The Manageress on a Saturday morning is particularly welcoming, friendly and good at her job.

Is it in the Wetherspoons brand values to be short staffed on any given day? Does the core product require more glasses to be left on the tables than behind the bar? Dont know but then again you do get an ever changing cask line up and fridges stocked with quality bottles. How many pubs have Czech Harold black lager in them for a couple of quid? You might wait a bit and theres a few rare breeds in here, but its better than being fleeced of 3 drinking up the road.

Appeared to be better than Brighton Wetherspoons and enjoyed the beer. The fish and chips were terrible though. The main menu meal had less on the plate than we normally get on the 2 for the price of one meal. Could do better. Loos were in a terrible state.
gillhalfpint - 5 Jun 2007 11:12
not too bad really.Cheerful staff. At least it feels like a pub as opposed to the all too often found Wetherspoon cavern

douvres - 9 Apr 2007 21:37
Service can be good if you get the right staff serving otherwise it's a disaster! Some of the regulars are quite rude to other customers.
jyan - 19 Mar 2007 14:33
Don't go on a sunday unless you want to wait all day to be served by staff still inebreated from the night before who have't got a clue what the do or don't have in stock. And make sure you have at least half a dozen choices in mind from the menu if you want to risk eating as most of it will have run out!
sweeny8000 - 27 Oct 2006 17:54
it a weatherspoons! you get what you pay for i suppose!!
anonymous - 18 Oct 2006 09:49
Cheap

Staff are quite friendly and polite. Beer cheap. Lots of slightly mad people. Limited choice; lots of beers have always just run out. No atmosphere. Friends eat food there which is also cheap. Gents need attention.
baldfatandugly - 19 Aug 2006 23:40
Ok for a cheap pint, but only if you can put up with the unfriendly staff. The locals are ok though, I found them to be quite friendly, although probably because most of them are usually too drunk and you can't understand what they're saying!. Like I said, OK for a cheap pint.
back_2_brighton - 16 Aug 2006 03:20
Very good range of local guest ales, otherwise a typical JD barn
reynedd - 8 Aug 2006 14:34
Been here a couple of times and have always found a good range of real ales on tap.Yesterday had a Butcombe Gold which was in good nick.Staff seem to be friendly enough but going by other comments this could have been more luck than judgement. On the whole it didn't seem a bad place.I have been in a lot worse places but then again a lot better.
apa - 8 Jul 2006 11:16
Yes i agree wiv all these negatives posted,, Basicly its a pub that serves cheap beer, but this only attracts all the dole boys with nothing better to do all day then to head down to DE pub and make it last a whole hour, " lol yes a whole hour " Ok for a punch up though if no-ones intrested try one of the barstaff im sure their be to glad to help out.
theblackhand - 30 Jan 2006 23:06
After my previous comments about this pub I popped in again to make sure that it could not POSSIBLY be as bad as its West Street counterpart commented upon elsewhere.

I was right - Nothing could possibly match the West Street Wetherspoon's for utter crapness but By The Lord Harry, Sir, this one is obivously vieing for the crown!

S**t service, bad attitude and appalling levels of cleanliness YET AGAIN!!!
toffee_exile - 2 May 2005 20:07
Cheap, cheerful and a great deal less pretentious than the Slug and Lettuce across the road. A typical Weatherspoons joint with a good range of well priced drinks. The other postings make a good point though - it is a bit of a lottery getting served.
gravedigga - 24 Apr 2005 13:18
We went here after the Millwall fan incident at The Ship... (read more on that page, it isn't very exciting... less an "incident" than an unfortunate coincidence really).
Can agree that, though the experience was typically formulaic Wetherspoon type (wherever you go, the service is the same. Do they train their staff in general ineptitude?), the experience wasn't too bad.
The Wetherspoon clientele is pretty much the same wherever you go too - and sitting around, with old fellas getting gently soused, isn't too bad once in a while.
anonymous - 14 Apr 2005 15:22
I keep trying this place and, eventually, end up giving it a wide berth (yet again) for the slowness of service and general surliness of the staff. Half the time it seems that, unless you're a fully-paid-up member of the Wetherspoon's Mafia they'd be sweeping cobwebs off you before you get served.
toffee_exile - 10 Mar 2005 19:07
How do they manage to serve 4 beers none of which have any taste. Cheap.
aph - 8 Mar 2005 13:25
OK so its not the best pub in the world - but its cheap, friendly enough and popular
Tim K - 14 Oct 2004 12:50
"Standard Wetherspoons", indeed. The beers are very good, and the pub now appears in the CAMRA Guide. But there are lots of tables packed closely together, and the atmosphere is 'functional' at best.
anonymous - 8 Aug 2004 21:35
Standard Wetherspoons. Visited last autumn and found the service to be "ok".
