Closed down, now an Indian resaurant (purple mango). Might be a better curry house than it was a pub.

Agree with the previous comment and call me grumpy but wasn't all that thrilled to have the barmaids little dears screaming loudly and jumping about me at 10:45pm. Can't see it being open that long again. Come back Carl, all is forgiven!!!

well.....what a great pub for gigs. when i lived in taunton, that was all there was to like really. and some football on the telly if you were inclined. the staff weren't the most welcome at first, but after a few times of going there, they seemed to accept me, and i finally got a smile.result!!......strange.
never eaten there but the menu always looked ok. nice refurb!

The Westy has just has a change in pub manager yet I still think it's a great place. Good company, good ale and good food. Not a girly pub though.

I think Meandnick will find his review is arguably silly. I did judge fo myself and let's face it, even if it has been done up fairly recently, you can't make a silk purse from a sows ear. No wonder the landlord was looking miserable on the front page of the local press recently!!! Also agree with previous comments over charm, characther and music videos.

i must say that since i have known this pub things have done nothing but gone up hill,myself and my family have been made so welcome,the atmosphere and service has been briliant,the choice of music is to suit everybody,the menu is full and variable. never judge a book by its cover and never judge a pub by its silly reviews judge it for yourself..... we rate it 10/10

just spent the last weekend in Taunton and visited the Westgate on both saturday and sunday. Beer garden now has patio heaters and a smoking shelter ready for the incoming ban in July and Carl is getting a new gas bar-b-que for patrons to use. Still great live music every week end and a great U2 tribute band on over the bank holiday. New food menue at affordable prices. Great banter from the regulars and Carl makes one smile quite often

Agree with a previous poster about bad music video's. Just your bog standard pub really, no more no less (also this pub has certainly been only been branded a Punch Tavern's pub since late 2006 (October/November I think) not for "several years" as the uninformed pompeyhatter states).

A fantastic place that was actually taken over by Punch Taverns, via their acquisition of a large company called Pubmaster, several years ago (not a few months ago as stated by an earlier uninformed reviewer). Be fair to them - they did spend �130k on the refurb.
Carl, Anita, James & Carly are superb and the pub oozes character Along with the Moat House and the Racehorse, this is one of the top 3 pubs in Taunton.
A superb local with great characters, great music and a great pint. Not many pubs stock St Austell's Tribute and Carl maintains and serves this perfectly. Even his miserable scowl would be missed as it's all part of the charm!!

A great pub, recently refurbished. Always a warm welcome from Carl and Anita. Live music every weekend. Great ales and good menue of cheap food. you know it's good when regulars all travel in to this pub

Certainly if your after live music this is for you...well kinda because, as for the pub itself, well hmmm. Recently taken over by Punch Taverns I believe and renovated a few months back with signs outside saying exclaiming "Look what we've done". Except this went as far as a new paint coat, switching a big pillar to a small pillar, a small change to the bar and a new big telly that was slightly smaller than the last one they had which pumps out youth orientated music channels. Saying that I applaud the fact they keep goung as a live music pub which Taunton really needs so has some reason to go, just don't expect a great place.
