Stopped by here on a day trip to Hastings and liked it very much. Good Shepherd's Neame beer which seems to be the thing to drink in these parts. A very good band played soul/R&B/Mod type tunes. Friendly locals whom we got chatting to. I would certainly go back.

Good honest drinking house

George, the best landlord in Hastings in my opinion, has now retired. Thank you and have a happy retirement George.

I have visited this pub many times over the years. George the land lord is the longest serving landlord in the town.
He is a down to earth guy and has changed things as needed over the years. It used to be a big darts pub and locals pub and now he has got rid of the dart board and has live music every weekend.
He always has good friendly staff and the cellar is always very clean and the food that Beryl does is lovely.
I hope he stays there a long time.

I love pubs like this. It looks and feels like a pub. No gimmicks and friendly staff.
Choice of ale was a bit thin but the Masterbrew was very nice and reasonably priced for somewhere on the sea front.

Has the atmosphere of a local pub even though it's right on the seafront. All in all an unremarkable place, but good for music with live bands at weekends.

I was in there last night 30/5/09 and it was OK for a given value of OK. A small pub of the type which would have been one man and his dog a few years ago. Shepherd Neame is not my tipple, a view shared by many people and yet Hastings Old Town seems to have so many. Spitfire was served ice cold which was a definite black mark against them and a summer ale was a little too warm just to rub it in. It would not be a first choice for me for a beer, although if you like naval memorabilia then it could be nice for a couple. Local seem to leave around the time the band came on, but in a pub that size the practical result was that people had trouble reaching the bar.

With a Shepherd Neame pub you usually know what you're getting before you walk through the door.
This place is typical Shepherd Neame. Not bad, buy any means, but nothing special. A typical Shepherd Neame pub in a town full of the things.

If you think the Falklands War was a load of Thatcherite propoganda then avaoid this place, it is a shrine to the armed forces. badges, photos of ships, and flags make it. If it ever burnt down it would go in 10mins given the dryness. Beer is awful

I love this place, one of the few that has not been buggered up or turned into a bistro by the 'down from London' crew.
Be afraid though.... they are working their 'magic' all the way down George street at the moment and this place could be invaded by leatherette sofas and ambient muzak in the not too distant.
I am not a great fan of Shepherd Neame beer on the whole, but have never had a bad one here.

As a 'foreigner' from Hampshire, I had an impromtu 1-day, mid-week crawl around the town and this was the only pub I returned to; fantastic military/naval stuff all over the place and a friendly reception. Beer was good too if Shepherd Neame is to your taste. What I saw of the food wasn't appetising but it isn't an eatery by any stretch of the imagination. Small & cosy - probably gets packed on summer weekends!

George's daughter is doing a splendid job bringing this pub into the 21st century. Good live music at weekends. Pity about the beer (Shepherd Neame is not my best tipple). Unfortunately they let the smelly locals in with there dogs.

George is a first class landlord. Always firendly to his customers and a good range of Sheps beers.

excellent Shepherd Neame beers; comfortable + friendly, can sit out front facing the sea or in garden at back. Watch out for trick spiders on pulleys! On edge of Old Town, with plenty more 1st-rate pubs. Make this part of an expedition.
