Lovely old world pub near the Navestock Golf Courses serving excellent home cooked food and a fine selection of good beers. All food Portions are generous and it keeps it's great warm pub atmosphere as well as being a busy food led house.
Very popular for at lunchtimes and early evenings and handy for living local as they do a full menu takeaway.

This country pub just outside of Brentwood is my local pub and was my dad's also back in the 80's and he reckons it's not altered in anyway .It still serves great cask ales, really good draught Guinness and 3 lager choices, It's a good old fashioned pub, serving good honest food and drink with a warm and friendly homely atmosphere.
The menu has so much choice and it's all home made, the fresh chips are always good and they've got the best steak pie for miles . You don't get a waitress service or tablecloth and you wont see any children in here , which makes for a nice quiet stress free
The staff are really friendly and chatty and I never seen an unhappy member of staff here as they all seem to enjoy their jobs.
Every Sunday they do a choice of 4 roasts with delicious roast spuds and fresh vegetables and real gravy and if you get there earlier enough you also get a free dessert.
The patio is great in the summer if you wish to bring the kids but beware you wont get a Child menu here but the prices are really reasonable.

I had read mixed reviews about this pub and have been wanting to try the Alma for a while so a large party of us did last night and we were not disappointed! It was packed but we soon were seated. The service was great and the staff are so friendly, and more importantly, the food was faultless! We both opted for the steak pie and the chips were fresh and cooked to perfection and the portions are just huge!! It's such good value We were too full to have a desert but we will try to have one next time! The Abbott ale was perfect and the driver in our party had the homemade lemonade which she said was so refreshing in this hot weather. We will be going back very soon and suggest to everyone to give it a try!

Lovely friendly country pub. The Abbott ale is well kept here and they have healthy home made lemonade and freshly squeezed orange juice for the non drinkers A large patio beer garden out front in the summer and a large car park so you can always get a space as it gets really busy here lunchtimes and early evenings Food is very good and is the best value food in the area. fresh and well presented. You have to pick your food up at the bar which suits me as you get it very quick.

Ive visited this pub on numerous occaisions and have i never once been disapointed in the food there is a very varied menu with somthing to suit every taste good selection of fresh fish and good quality homemade pies which this pub is know for its steak pie.
They do a good choice of sunday roasts with a good choice of meats and well cooked vegetables as well as a full menu.

The pub has a cosy atmosphere with a conservatory which we have seen used for large parties and were still served very quickly all the staff are very friendly And allways seemed please to serve you they all ways seem busy enough when we have dined there.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon in the hope of a good meal!! To start with it cost 5.75 for 5 pieces of poorly cooked breaded scampi. For mains We ordered the beef roast, I can truly say it was the worst meal ever ordered! There was 3 small cold dry roast potatoes, cold sliced carrots, 1 piece of over cooked mushy cold broccoli, 1 cardboard Aunt Bessie Yorkshire pudding and 3 small WAFER thin slices of beef costing just short of 10 each!!
I can honestly say that the quality and portions of food sold here is worse than a frozen supermarket roast dinner! Save your money and disappointment and eat elsewhere that serve traditional quality roast dinners.
This pub uses a system that requires the customer to order and pay for their food in advance and then listen for their order number to be announced on a intercom so that they can then collect the food from the bar. You would expect that due to having no waiting staff overheads, the quality of food would reflect this!

Used to be a fine real ale pub but the grey beards have taken over so I dont bother going there now and the Green Man up the road has closed down there is no choice.

Went at 8pm on a weekday for a meal, got a drink whilst i browsed menu, went upto order and practically everything on the menu was not available. Had only a choice of pies or lasagne.

That was dissapointing as if they had put a menu notice up saying 80% of their menu was not available i would not have ordered drinks and gone elsewhere as i was starving and wanted all the things not available.

Apparently they had no delivery that day which is fair enough but would be good then to put a notice up as i said so you can make your decision whether to stay before sitting down and ordering drinks and choosing what you want.

The tannoy system was a bit tacky and service at the till wasn't particularly warm but the food was well priced, nice and good portions. I suppose the self service and tannoy keeps the price down so not a complaint just a personal preference.

We visited the alma arms as a group of 6,the ladies chose steaks, all of which were cooked to their liking, the men chose various recipes of home made steak pies all of which were outstanding.
The vegetables were well cooked and presented and piping hot.
We found the ticket system practical and the self service aspect was reflected in the price.
The men enjoyed several pints of real ale and noted that they were served at the correct temperature.
The ladies enjoyed their wine, both red and white.
We all fully intend to visit again and would not hesitate to reccomend it to anybody

Visited this pub on a Saturday lunchtime. It was extremely busy and the car park was full. This is always a good sign that there will be a warm welcome and the food will be passable. Whilst agreeing with the comments about it being more of a restaurant than a pub, I found a very good pint of Bishops Finger and an equally well kept pint of Spitfire. Both of these beers are from Shepherd Neame brewery in Kent.

My companion was the landlord of The Hoops in Barton Cambridgeshire. He was impressed with the service and the condition of the beer despite the pub being busy. We selected from the menu and decided upon lamb shank in a red wine sauce. The meal was well cooked and presented. The practice of issuing numbers and calling these out over a tannoy system was, I feel, a little impersonal. However it was functional and certainly saved on staffing numbers required. Food was reasonably priced.

I would recommend this pub to anyone wanting a reasonable pint of real ale and a passable, not overly priced meal.

Have been going to the Alma a several times a year for over 20 years. Tonight was the worst experience. Skate smelt of ammonia and I couldn't eat it, the smell put my husband off his steak and stilton pie. Service really poor-3/4hour wait for dinner from 6.15 pm so not massively busy-we were warned it would be 20 minutes! One of the chefs came out picking her teeth then handling the food. Such a shame- we won't be going back.

I'm surprised at lesjan's comments, I think that the pub has been a victim of it's own success. It used to be a drinker's pub but then they built the conservatory and now it is a foodie pub - and a good one. Unfortunately the silver surfers, or whatever you call them, have latched onto the place and you often can't get through the door for walking sticks. They probably have a special late offer on as most silver surfers want to be home by eight. Still serves good real ale.

I have been here four times now and each time I had a good experience.

It is more a restuarant than a pub to be honest - you wont find too many people just there for a drink - and serves good homecooked food which I have always really enjoyed.

Only downside is the whole 'going to collect your own food', which can be annoying, and the 'pa' system can be a bit hard to hear over the noise of a crowded pub.

A decent pub with a few good ales and very nice food.

This is a Fawlty towers pub. Too cold to sit in conservatory, and most people had their coats on in the pub. You can't set up a tab, you can't use a card under 15, You can't use the special offer until 8.30 pm although the staff are standing around with nothing to do. you have to go to the right till to order, they give you a number which is then called out on the pa, like a station, then you have to go and get it. the food was like school dinners. I guess the pensioners/customers thought it good value.

This pub is off the beaten track and hard to find, but once you find it, you will be glad you did. The food here is all home cooked and is to die for. I believe it is a family run pub that has been owned by the same family for years. It has a nice conservatory area that has been added onto the back, which is nice to sit in during the summer months. Otherwise this place is your typical, cozy country pub that serves great food and drink.
