This pub is nicely situated. It is advertising for a new chef, and it certainly needs one. My wife's "Mediterranean pasta" considered solely of pasta and tomato puree. Not a hint of an olive or an onion or a pepper or garlic or a caper, anything Mediterranean in fact. My Thai prawns were a gooey mess.
Hope they get a new cook soon. We won't be returning before then

reedrider - I suggest you widen your "food Knowledge" a bit further than Wikipedia.

Of course a club sandwhich has bloody cheese in it. Nice to see you have slaughtered a pub for no good reason whatsover.

With such a fabulous location, I made a beeline for this pub but I'll avoid it in future. What a disappointment! My other half and I both ordered a chicken and bacon club sandwich (definition from Wikipedia: "A club sandwich, also called a clubhouse sandwich or double-decker, is a sandwich with two layers of fillings between 3 slices of toasted bread. It is often cut into quarters and held together by hors d'uvre sticks...The traditional club ingredients are turkey on the bottom layer, and bacon, lettuce, and tomato on the top") and took our seats on the terrace overlooking the river. The table wasn't cleared, but we assumed it would be. It was later half cleared but as it turned out we put up with dirty glasses around us the whole time. And the sandwiches! My other half ate his, saying it was well below average, the filling seemed to be out of a tin. It wasn't chicken, it wasn't bacon but it did contain cheese, not shown in the menu. I cannot eat cheese, so I had to take mine back. I was told, rudely, that a club sandwich always had cheese, and that is what the term "club sandwich" meant. My fault then! After much persuasion, and an increasingly aggressive response from the landlady, I was brought a replacement sandwich. But she had it in for me! Yesterday's bacon, yesterday's chicken, and bread so stale I couldn't chew it. I ate what I could because I was starving, but it tasted so bad that I stayed hungry rather than struggle through it all. The landlady ought to remember that every customer could be a mystery shopper in this age of reviews Fortunately, and here's one good thing - there were mints in the toilet, complimentary, with which to mask the taste of the awful food.

Called in a couple of Saturdays ago. Nice place, busy late afternoon trade, OK pint. Will return.

Myself, my wife and 2 friends paid a visit to The Gate House on the evening of Sunday 21st November. On arrival found it to be very quiet and was pleasantly suprised upon asking to find out they were serving food. The waitress/bar staff were very helpful, the chef was happy to alter some aspects of the meal and the result of which was an absolutely wonderful meal. We had 3 fillet steaks and a lamb shank and would highly recommend them all, well worth a side of stilton suce as well.....marvellous. I have to say a very pleasent end to a great weekend break in Monmouth.

Very bad service in this pub. Served with a cold coffee with cream. They used pudding spray cream eventually as they did not have any cream. This just went ibto globules.Ordered a panini but got a baggette instead with no explanation. Complained but no apology was given. AVOID THIS PUB.

The pub has recently had a complete refurb and is almost unrecognisable to what it was. Good food , good entertainment , new veranda with excellent river/bridge views a great place to watch the world go by while enjoying a nice pint in the sun.

The Gate House is situated by the river next to the historic 13th century Monnow bridge but does not really make the best use of its prime location. From the outside, the pub is quite tatty and run down with copious amounts of peeling paint, rotting wood and tired looking flower baskets. Check out the front door for starters! The small interior is divided into a stone floored main bar and a screened off dining area to the rear. At least the dcor is in better shape than the exterior although it does seem a bit dated and the pink paintwork in the dining section is perhaps not to everyones taste. There are lots of plates and pictures adorning the walls and a few flickering lights but overall the interior is not particularly memorable. Space is at a premium when busy although the dining area was totally empty on our visit and we just managed to grab the last couple of stools around a pillar with a shelf. Of the 4 hand pumps, 2 were out of use but Hancocks HP and Sharops Wills Resolve were both available and seemed fine to my untrained palate. I certainly couldnt complain about the service - unable to see what beers were on the barman / landlord was quick to point them out and a short measure was topped up without any prompting. The locals were quite friendly as was the cat. There were signs for a Thursday quiz night and there is an enclosed beer garden to the rear although it did not look like you get much of a river view. The other big plus was having a chippy next door - always pretty handy! Overall, not a particularly memorable pub, especially given its location but it is perfectly adequate for a friendly couple of pints.
