Decor is good.

Food and service are just average, and prices are on the high side.

Our waiter was less than friendly - and rather inefficient.

Reopened - after 5* refurbishment. Fixtures and fittings are very high standard.

Ample staff, and although I didn't eat, the food looked top quality - as was my lager.

There are now 4/5 food oriented pubs on the A25 - between Reigate and Dorking - all raising the stakes.

Good for the customer and this - and all the other venues are gearing up for a busy Christmas trade, offering a variety of deals.
tradervic - 7 Nov 2016 12:02
Closed until 2nd November - for refurbishment.

Yet another refurbishment commenced, although it remains busy/trading.

This weekends pub visits have proved that the quality of beer and service in our pubs is not good enough. I waited to be served, whilst the staff chatted and found other things to do, then was given a real shocker of a pint, waited to see if it was condensation, or it really was that cloudy. It was rank - took it back and was then served another beer which was almost as bad. If your sold faulty produce, you should not be made to feel it's your mistake, It isn't!

Went in for dinner just before Easter and have to say I was disapointed.

The whole place was very quiet which never used to be the case. The menu was very limited edging more towards what I would class as bar meals compared to what it used to offer.

It is certainly not a gastro type establishment anymore and it certainly needs to up it's game again if I am going to return.

Get your act together.

It's really quite simple unless we are talking about a Wacky Warehouse kids should be bloody banned from pubs.

There is nothing worse then going out for a few beers and a bite to eat only to have it ruined by illmannered spoilt brats running riot or screaming the place down because their self centered ignorrant parents could not care less.
kevmac - 4 Mar 2012 13:48
As poster Jimbutcher points out " there's plenty of room for my children to run around (both inside and out). ". If you'd prefer not to eat and drink in a kinddergarten where parents think it acceptable to allow their offspring to run around, go somewhere else.

Beer was OK, food not bad, loos seemed OK to me but lots and lots of small children and babies.
gareth1011 - 4 Mar 2012 13:03
The Arkle is a great gastro pub, but the previous poster is spot on about the loos.

Get it sorted management.

Visited last night as I try to do if I'm passing by because of the selection of beers available. Well worth popping in if you are in the area - comfortable seating areas to the left as you enter the front door, with the restaurant to the right. I have eaten here in the past and the food was excellent. Loo's could do with a bit of a clean up as not really up to the high standards of the rest of the experience. Also, the community spirited person who owns the big silver Merc 4X4 who insists on parking in the disablied space at the front of the pub, please try to be a bit more considerate to others or display you badge!

Obviously, originally a 1930's road house style pub. On a trangular site
formed by Reigate Road and the Old Reigate Road, with the building side
on between the two roads at the base of the triangle and the rest making
a large parking area in front. Pub now almost totally given over to a
mid-market restaurant, done out in a modern, light, Scandinavian style.
A couple of cuts or more above yer Chef & Brewers and yer Ember Inns. The food is excellent and well worth a visit as a restaurant but not as a pub.

nice bar, food was quite good. its modern and has a good atmosphere, would go back again if i'm in the area

I frequently pop into this pub, as there's plenty of room for my children to run around (both inside and out). I've always found the staff polite & efficient, and the food of a good standard (and reasonably priced).

It could do with a few more ales. Last time I was in they at least had the Surrey Hills 'Shere Drop' on tap.
jimbutcher - 27 Jun 2011 11:22
Went to the Arkle Manor for my leaving do for 8 people. The restaurant manager was extremely rude as we had not booked and told us that we had to eat in the bar instead. There were 3 bar staff behind the bar but only one was serving. The other two were stacking cups and filling up peanut jars. Finally a surly barman took my order and after that ignored all the others waiting for a drink and to order food. The end result was that we waited ages to get a drink and the food was served eractically

Popped in for a quick beer and enjoyed a well kept pint of London Pride. credit where its due. Very nice ambience and friendly staff. Keep up the good work.

My wife and I visited this pub on a Monday evening. The food is fairly good and they have a great selection of lager and beers on tap and good Champagne by the glass if you want a special treat! It is perfect for a quick meal early in the week when you can have the pick of the sofas. We went for the sofa in front of their large and impressive open log fire where you can relax and enjoy the space the ambience and the elegant understated modern dcor. We like!

Went on new years day without booking. Despite being busy staff were efficient and friendly and found us a table that we had to be clear of by 2:30 not a problem and its nice to know if there are any limits. Ordered Pizzas and they were excellent and service was good. It is a sign of a good restaurant - this is no longer a 'pub' that a spilled drinks disaster on an adjacent table was handled brilliantly and with good humor at a very busy time and one customer ended up wearing an Arkle Manor shirt!! One warning the Bitter Beer is served too cold - a minor winge but another sign this is no longer a pub.
tinplatetony - 9 Jan 2010 16:28
The first time we had a meal here it was ok although nothing particularly special, probably just below the level of an All Bar One.

The second time we vistited we had pizzas which were decidedly ropey e.g one had prawns which were covered in the cheese & sauce etc. which would have been fine if they didn't still have their shells on! The other pizza was soggy and have a really processed taste.

This may have just been an off day but it has put us off going back which is a shame as it looks great and if they raised their game we would be regular visitors.

Just for info purposes the best pizzas I have found in the area are Rialto's in Dorking and Strada in Reigate.

The food is good quality. The decor is modern and fresh. It's pricey, but worth it I think. It's more of a gastro pub than your cosy traditonal boozer. I'll be going back to eat on special occasions.
ambasamba - 26 Apr 2009 16:10
went here for lunch yesterday and what a terrible place.Firstly we were told that they wouldn't serve us food out the back only if we were sitting out the front.
spoke to the manager who said we would have to collect it from the bar the place was empty and there was three staff on?! so why i don't know! then when collecting the food the barman seemed vacant as to what food!! completley unacceptable won't be going back again!
smobily - 4 Apr 2009 10:33
Excellent and well worth a visit. The carpark can often be full during popular spells. Nice drinking area with comfy sofas and enjoyable decor. Garden has potential to be nice with the summer approaching.
218238 - 1 Apr 2008 16:28
'Pie of the Day: Shepherd's Pie'??!!!
That ain't no pie.

Otherwise very pleasant. Bit pricey.

We stopped hear for a family Sunday lunch not knowing what to expect given the mixed reviews. We found a nicely laid out pub in pleasant surrounding. The menu interesting and the food quality very good hence we would consider it good value for money. Did not investigate the beers as the only beer drinkers were the drivers!
Hama - 2 Sep 2007 19:53
Used to be the sort of drab roadside establishment that one just continued to drive past, but the exterior and (especially) interior have been given a thorough makeover. I'm not sure that modern leather and polished wood decor is quite my sort of thing, but there is probably a good market for it in this part of leafy Surrey. Apart from that, it had Timothy Taylor Landlord on, but I suspect that they don't through much real ale here.
rpadam - 20 Jul 2007 18:35
I am a great fan of the decor, beer is ok too, but have to say I have found the service to be a bit slack. I ate here as part of their opening week, food & service were great, even considering that most of the staff were trainees. Been back a few times since & have to say that the standards have slipped, food has been a bit inconsistent too.
There are quite a few places doing better for less.
Biggus - 18 Jun 2007 11:18
I have been to the Arkle a number of times now and not once can I say I have been disappointed. The food is lovely with a nice variety to suit most peoples tastes. The Staff are friendly and always pleasant. I have been there twice with a big family party of 15+, they handled this very well all our food came out at the same time which is something i find certain places seem to struggle with.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
anonymous - 17 Mar 2007 06:03
Very nice decor and always seems busy. However, the food seems overpriced for what it is. Three of us had a risotto which seemed to have been made with the wrong rice - it was like a soggy rice pudding with meat and veg added! The other person had a pizza which looked ok but didn't make you want to have one, especially at the price.

DaveTel - 21 Jan 2007 18:04
Well, I had a great beer there with a great meal a few weeks ago. Just goes to show that different things appeal to different people. I thought they'd done a fantastic job on what was a dull Harvester to create a really good place to eat and drink. Yes it does food over beer & wine, but, as I've said before, anywhere this big down south HAS to serve good food and serve it well to warrant the makeover and stay open. Well done chaps. You've done a great job. The beer / wine / food and service where all great. The decor is modern without being stupid or looking like World of Leather. Sorry nickdavies, if you go into a pub this big in rural Surrey, expect a restaurant that serves beer rather than a homely pub with a pool table. The economics just dont work in 2007 unless they serve food in such large places out in the sticks. If you want a pub this big with great atmosphere, go to Yorkshire (or a quiet corner of East Sussex). The Timothy Taylor will taste fresher apart from anything else and even there, things are changing for the same reasons as in Surrey. Im not saying its a GOOD THING, Im just saying thats the way it is

Second pub along this stretch of road to go from a dreadful chain eatery (this one was a Harvester) to an ultra pretentious and completely atmosphere free gastropub. It's more like entering a branch of World of Leather than a pub, both in sight and smell. Usual bare boards and horrid sofas you can't get up from. It took us all of 30 seconds to realise that having a pint here was going to be such an overwhelmingly depressing experience that we decided to relocate to the more down to earth pleasures of the Dolphin.
nickdavies - 21 Nov 2006 16:21
This has recently been taken over from being a Harvester and has been completely refurbished.
The Partners chain have done a stunning job on the interior and it's almost unrecognisable. Food and service are A1 and we couldn't fault either. Although not cheap this lovely country put is value for money. But reserve a table if you want to try it - it's fast becoming the favourite eaterie in the district.
Heather Roberts - 2 Nov 2006 14:33
I can only imagine that it's taken till now for this pub to get into BITE because no-one went in in its Harvester days, and that it's now such a celebration of pretentious tosserishness that no self respecting BITE reader can bring themseves to visit. Well we gave it a go and lasted all of 90 seconds. Barely distiguishable from the equally dreadful Jolly Farmers down the road, the inside looks, and unfortunately smells like a branch of World of Leather, all horrid low sofas and bare floors. Usual ostentatious anti-smoking policy you get in these places. And don't get me started on the nonsensical gibberish that is the menu. There's a section called 'Leaves' right, so that's what we did, and went to the Dolphin.
