One, Lewisham

back to pub details

user reviews of One, Lewisham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Has recently changed to The White Horse bar & pizzeria

But it is very much the same in terms of layout, furtniture and decor... but they serve pizzas now.

Went on a Saturday evening and was quite empty, think it's the superior prices compared to the rest of the pubs in Lewisham, which manages to keep the riff-raff (and everyone else) away.

If you like a quiet, slightly more civilised drink and pricers than the rest of Lewisham's ever-decreasing pubs, then check this one out.
themeehan - 23 Jun 2015 10:08
new managers in there so fingers crossed they breath fresh air through the place
jeffalan - 27 Jun 2013 21:45
right where do i start been using this pub for a while in the past yr ,friday nights are gd karoke but im sure they could do better if they changed the person doin the karoke. saturdays the odd occasional band not my thing but will lsten coz im out the house. the ppl r friendly enough but a majority of them r in and out the mens toilets taking their drugs. personally i have nothing against ppl that take drugs, but i think theres a time and a place and the place def isnt in a pub. but im sureif u take the druggies out the one bar will b no more

Pesky laptop and kitten on my keyboard, let's try that request again:

Does anyone know the details of the owners?

I have a legitimate complaint of assult on me by a drunken member of staff. Pity stops me from police involvement.

what a place for drugs and dogs ...yep dogs with 4 legs...dirty uncouth and full of coke heads should be shut down immediately used to be lovely not now it has every undesirable there is to know in lewisham avoid avoid avoid,,,,
thepubspied - 10 May 2012 22:48
Not bad by Lewisham's standards - I use it sometimes on the way home to watch the Champions League games - wouldn't go out to go here though - usually have a pint of stella, no complaints.
sir_adam_of_downham - 17 Jun 2010 23:36
May we ask the "manager" (and yes I use the term loosely) to, and I qutote "Jog on".

Yes, Einstein, I have homes to go to, plus other bars with 24 hour licence.

No gold star there then.
bigpalooka - 25 Jan 2010 02:27
Mostly Harmless.

Not nearly as bad as some of the reviews but certainly not the magic palace of wonder that some of the fake reviewers would have us believe. The phrase 'Mutton dressed up as MDF lamb' comes to mind. Beer, the usual nitro-gas kiddy fizz. Nothing special or exotic about 1664. Real ale: nil pointe. Food, can't comment as we didn't try any. However, in my first visit there when it was still the White Horse, the barmaid did a run across the street to the chippie for any customer that wanted food. If you are stuck in the hell hole of Lewisham its as good as it gets. Otherwise not worth making an effort to visit.
Zaphod - 13 Oct 2009 10:47
The reviews seem to be an intriguing mix of disappointed punters with perfectly valid comments, countered by the owners/management posting gushing OTT reviews drivelling on about how amazing the place is. I'll continue to give it a miss until some consistency emerges.
mese13 - 24 Aug 2009 17:40
Very strange pub. Seems to be an unpleasant atmosphere and most of this seems to come from the staff. Always seems very quiet when I have been so I have no idea how it keeps going. My mate reckons it is a cover up for some sort of dodgy operation.
nrj746 - 12 Aug 2009 14:25
Deeply unpleaseant landlord. He's obviously never had to work with people before, probably robbed enough houses to afford the rent on this place. I saw him get really nasty and threatening to some non-English speakers who weren't drinking quickly enough during the football. Apart from him, the place is just ok, no draft ale though.
bbbeeeeeerrr - 17 Jul 2009 16:15
Very convinient for market and bowling ally. Ideal for watching the football, food looks good and a decent enough pint of Guinness. Staff quite friendly.
One complaint; usually this pub is clean and tidy but on our last visit, about six weeks ago, the place stank to high heaven of really bad toilets, causing us to bail out at half time.
flashharry1965 - 29 May 2009 10:51
I tried their new English menu and i must say for the price it was excellent. The atmosphere was good and the Guinness was the best i have tasted in the area. The staff here are friendly and accomodating and their always seems to be something on whether it be sport, open mic or parties. I have never had an issue with One, the surrounding area may not be the best but this is a real little oasis.
theevent - 15 Apr 2009 12:50
Last night, cold service from a warm girl, slightly fizzy slightly weak Guiness, and half full pub. Football service is great and happy to report a strong Liverpool allegiance remains here. Food is reportedly fine. My main beef is that every time i go there is at least one oddball, stalking the pub, looking like trouble ... and noone wants to be the poor soul who gets picked on. On previous occasions it has been a drunk man pestering women - always dealt with expertly once a problem has arisen.. Difficult issue to deal with in any pub, yet a problem any pub in the heart of Lewisham should be ready to deal with BEFORE an incident starts. I hope this advice is heeded, am sure my experience is isolated, and i give this pub a tentative thumbs up.
jacl20c - 18 Dec 2008 13:28
One has got a really good new menu, Tapas, I took my sister there last friday for a meal, and was very pleased with the food and the service. The staff have really improved, very polite like you would expect from a well run venue. Great new wine list, must admit we left a little worse for ware!!
midnightpoolchampion - 14 Oct 2008 22:35
Recently revamped completely. New manager, new staff and great beer as always. I will be down this weekend and can't wait for the football to start again. No nicer place in Lewisham in my opinion.
theevent - 1 Aug 2008 11:41
I think the staff are great, a couple of new really friendly girls, Also Joe new guy. Love the new floor.
midnightpoolchampion - 8 May 2008 01:40
Not much changing I see, come on One pull your socks up for god,s sake!Get it on or you'll be left behind. Lovely girl behind the bar what more does a bar need? Sort out the beer the entertainment and better looking staff and I think you can pull it back........Hope so anyway!!GoodLuck!
blackheathbabe - 18 Apr 2008 19:36
I always like to catch up on any establishment that serves food and ale and of course one where there always seems to be a mixed reaction to both. One bar was I thought a dainty place to visit last time in Lewisham and although I did not get a chance last time to sample their food I did Like one for all that it did have to offer me. This time I was not so happy at what met my eyes. There was one lad at the bar humping on about why he was not allowed to wear a hat another complaining about the smell and another telling his friend he would not be back as the beer was totally off.Unlike my last visit I was very put off by all that I heard and saw but still I can see what at least two of them were ranting on about.Changes do need to be made at one if it is to survive. It has lots of potential to survive in Lewisham but i do feel that if it has had new owners they do need to look at their staff as something is not working in conjunction with what the customer base want. Was a lovely pub with lots to offer I do hope it comes back.
ThePubSpy - 1 Apr 2008 13:11
Such a shame-this used to be a lovely relaxing bar with mild mannered middle class drinkers 9ok there were the odd bit of rough but a girl likes that now and then). The staff are different and the girl running it (tiara ) needs to get new staff as the current ones are ugly, rude and have not got a sense of what they are doing. There are a lot of young (and i mean young) kids who congregate around the table thinking that they own the bar and i think maybe related to someone who does (or works there). I really used to love it in one but i am so sorry it is depressing now and really quite scary. The customer base and the music seems to be from the now closed yates,s -----need i say more?
blackheathbabe - 29 Mar 2008 10:30
Oh, and I see they have a "Way Out West" fancy dress night this weekend.

I presume their will be a (cowboy) hat stand in order to keep in line with the new "Hats off - it's CCTV" policy.

Also seems ironic as it was not so long that they had a proper punch up there with chairs flying everywhere...

bigpalooka - 28 Mar 2008 14:53
The owners of this place must be thick as the proverbial if they think Les really wrote that previous review.

Oh - and it's still cold there and I'll wear a hat anytime I like.

Regards,

bigpalooka - 27 Mar 2008 21:59
It's definately gone downhill. The bar staff run the place just for themselves these days. Even the music has changed - me and my mates went in there the other night and 'smack my bitch up' was playing at full pelt - couldn't hear the footy and the bar staff couldn't hear what drinks we wanted. The reason they are so keen to hassle everyone to leave at 11 ish is because they have their mates in afterwards(they start to gather round the fruit machine about ten minutes before you're booted out). To be honest this bar used to be great - good food, friendly staff and locals...all that. But now it is run by a couple of hatchet faced teenagers who clearly aren't up to it. The sad fact is it will probably carry on in this downward spiral until it becomes like the white horse again.
brembo - 27 Mar 2008 00:42
I have to say I was back in One on Saturday for the Liverpool/Man utd game, go go Liverpool,I like a few others were not amused by the lack of head on the lager. I really do not know what is happening here one minute its cool in one then it goes to pot again. Good game though and a good day.Just a shame about the lager.
millwallandy1 - 26 Mar 2008 11:29
I agree with the midnightpoolchampion, Les is very rude and although there have been times when the bar,s been cold its still a great pub with lots of atmosphere and the foods back on too.If the smokers closed the doors when they go outside it would not be so cold and a better atmosphere for those of us who still drink in one.I personally always wear a jumper or jacket as it is technically winter and when i;m doing my rounds for an ale it gets cold out in Lewisham. One is still the best pub around and even better than the competition!!
millwallandy1 - 21 Mar 2008 13:56
Les, thats' not very nice is it, perhaps, if ,you had put on a cardigan or coat you might not be so cold, after all, it is winter!!

and yes, they do sell real ale.
midnightpoolchampion - 18 Mar 2008 22:51
It's too cold and there's no bitter.

You B'stards can't bar me from the INternet!

Les.
bigpalooka - 5 Mar 2008 19:42
Hi there, its me again, I dont know when the previous person was in One, I was there last saturday night, and the place was as busy as ever, and it was open really late. Food back on, and staff very good . Its still the top bar for me in Lewisham.
midnightpoolchampion - 12 Feb 2008 19:45
woah. wot happened to this pub?Last time in was like yeah.1 Now it's like when you leaving- and thats the manager askin at 11.30 on a fri or sat. Was a real gd place with loads of talent now---- well judge for yourself.Got to be sorted. too many cheifs in the pub not enough indians. My m8 luvs it so can't be all bnad but she luv's all pubs lol.
Hope you do the thing req.d n get it bk to way it was. Too expensive anyway way over the local price listings 4 lewisham
samanthaL - 30 Jan 2008 19:53
I,ve been reading up on this bars progress over the past few reviews and I do not believe what I am seeing. Surely the high standards are not slipping away from a bar as lovely as one. I really love going to one and im sure whats happening is only a hiccup but i really do hope you can all pull together and get it back to its formal glory as lewishams no 1 watering hole once again. Its still the best in lewisham i think and i hope to see you again real soon guys and gals.

donnam - 25 Jan 2008 01:42
I too was in ONE on sat night and had the same experience alas!I too witnessed a couple leaving (not too happy either)I have noticed Ray was not there and the staff who were on were not too customer aware if i have to be honest.
It looks like the new manager is not up to the challenge it appears. The fridges were bare and not stocked again and my favourite san miguel was not ready for over an hour! The pub looks like it is not as clean as it once was and this is a real pity as I love the place and the ambience. Alas ONE is going down that slippery road and needs to pull it's socks up!The staff just don't care now why is this???
I think i know who u r lettyp!!We should get together and talk more privately!
millwallandy1 - 21 Jan 2008 12:32
I have not been into ONE for a week or so and i must say I was dissapointed when i last visited. I waited an eternity to be served as there were no staff behind the bar when i went in.After about 5 minutes i was finally served by a black haired girl who looked as though she had been on her phone the way she threw it onto the bar when she emerged from the back. It looks like the new manager does not believe in telling his staff that the customer comes first. While i was waiting a rather irrate big man and his girlfriend/wife left as they could not be bothered to wait any longer, I am sorry ONE but i have always praised your bar but you have let me down on this. You are losing the fight and my praise ....wot happened????
lettyp - 21 Jan 2008 12:22
I like this bar, despite what the previous "expert" rampant wurzel has to say.
midnightpoolchampion - 16 Jan 2008 19:15
I do like these highbrow intellectual debates that seem to be a feature of this website !
JohnBonser - 11 Jan 2008 13:42
PubSpy

As I am sure you are aware, a person who does not like pubs would

a) Not be on this site in the first place
b) Not write so many reviews
c) Probably go to Slug and Lettuce pubs.

Believe it or not, I don't spend my life finding bad pubs and going to them - I have written a number of positive reviews. I feel though that there are too many places in London which are simply not good enough and that it's important to highlight as such the shortfall of these establishments. If no one did, we'd have All Bar One copies all over London. We do not want that now do we?

The reason there are two reviews is because I missed out a detail I wanted to add about the place. I stand by my opinion on that day, and if I go back in maybe I'll be convinced otherwise.

As for limited number of pubs - I think if you count them I've reviewed more places than you and in fact we seem to share a similar view about the Charlie Chaplin, E&C (I'm sure you spotted that before posting here). You'll also note that of the limited pubs I have reviewed some - gasp - are outside the SE12/SE6 postcode!!!!!!!!

Look, I'm kidding. This is a web based reviewing page and while I could gush about the good pubs I have been in they're all in Dorset and no f00ker wants to go down there.....

rampantwurzel - 11 Jan 2008 13:32
I truly feel for this bar as so many people have negative remarks to make on its obvious success. Rampant wurzel makes fun of people who are "dedicating their time to praising it to the hilt to the tune of half a dozen times" when he or she has just entered 2 yes 2 reviews in about 4 minutes of each other! It would seem that he or she (after looking over some of his/hers previous reviews does not like most pubs he or she drinks in and has negative things to say about the very limited pubs he or she has been in.Perhaps drinking is not your style or indeed socialising in pubs. Have you tried crochet or nitting perhaps.I have only known of this site for a number of weeks but already I can see that 90% of visitors have indeed been in to one had a drink had a laugh and had a good time so i am at a loss to try to comprehend why another person does not indeed like one. It is only my opinion mind you but having said that,as a pub and bar critic as a proffession I have to disagree with negative comments about this bar.I do feel that there are those out there who are deliberately misleading people about this bar by using this site. As i said it is only MY opinion but hey who am I ? Happy new year to all and thanks to you one for a lovely beer a lovely smile and a lovely evening once again last night.
ThePubSpy - 11 Jan 2008 11:42
Furthermore to my previous review (because there will no doubt be a comeback) if you like lager drinking pubs then come here, get smashed, watch the football, have a fight.

A pub should not require defending, certainly this place does not deserve two reviewers dedicating their time to praising it to the hilt to the tune of half a dozen times. Where I choose to drink, other people tend to be able to agree with me without forming a posse....
rampantwurzel - 10 Jan 2008 13:56
It's good to get a feel for the place beforehand by going on BiTE. Having read the reviews below I felt a compelling urge to see why this place has polarised opinion between Topdog and MidnightPool etc.

Lagers a plenty in here, ale not available today. in fact it doesn't look like it's ever been available. The problem I have with places liek this (and Brew Wharf - take note) is that I expect a few little things.

1. Service - Good actually, though stranded with a small selection to choose from unless lager is desired

2. Decor - Ikea designed and decorated. Pub decorators/designers - we can see through the fake Hoxton chic, and I hate Hoxton too (see Bar Ria review).

3. Selection - Sh1te.

I live in SE London. Our pubs are either well done or over done. This is the latter - it's a lager drinkers, pre-tank Saturday pub. I'd never invite friends here for a beer, particularly based on the militant support here. We write reviews of places on this site, some you'll agree with others you won't - but I'm sorry unless your scope is as limited as your botched Millwall tattoo you'll think this place is awful.
rampantwurzel - 10 Jan 2008 13:51
I second that andy. How can someone who by his own admission slate off a bar when he has not been into it yet? There is definately a conspiracy to defamate the name of this good pub.I for one like it and from what i have read so far it looks like it has the blessing of the infamous PubSpy too who everyone knows is a pub critic in London so it cannot be all that bad i would say!
lettyp - 6 Jan 2008 12:21
I like kronenbourg and like all my london mates stella too. Problem is (and this is for you topdog_andy---? either you are deliberatley trying to slate off bar one for your own or your friends reasons or you simply like lying. REASON=Bar ONE does not sell STELLA!!!
Get a life if you dont like the bar dont bloody drink in it but jesus christ mate don't wate your time on this site just blatantly slagging the gaff off. And for the record what pub do you drink in in lewisham cos they are not any better than this one and you know it too. Tell your pals to stay away in their own pub if they are like you small minded and very biased. My god people us this site to rate bars not take out personal vendettas! You don't happen to be the previous manager do you?Or friend of his by any chance? Any one with half a brain can see what you are doing so carry on you are simply making a fool of yourself
millwallandy1 - 4 Jan 2008 17:14
ha ha This is brilliant go for it midnightpool champ....ha ha ! It's called ONE as it.s address is ONE Lee High Road ha ha !!!! You tell em pool champ. As regards to the post you replied to about the foreign beer too can the previous person ie:topdog_andy recommend a better bar in Lewisham.? Looks like he has nothing better to do either !! other than socialise on this website to see what others are saying!1 ha ha ! I love it i love lewisham i love the crack i love foreign beer ha ha ha ha ! Oh and i love a laugh ha ha ha ha !!!
lettyp - 3 Jan 2008 20:28
To the previous comments, foreign beer, dosen't nearly everyone pub in London sell Stella and Krongbourg? and I suppose people refer to ONE as "ONE" because that is what it is called!!
midnightpoolchampion - 2 Jan 2008 20:46
If this pub's so great, why do all the customers seem to socialise via this website, rather than in person? And why does everyone refer to it as ONE in capitals? Is it an acronym? Owners Need Evicting? Once Nice Establishment?

After slating this place without ever entering, I gave it a try before bowling across the road. No surprise - it's terrible. If you think you're sophisticated because you drink "Foreign Lager" (Kronenbourg and Stella), this place is for you.
topdog_andy - 2 Jan 2008 17:42
I visited this fine bar again over the xmas and new year and found it to be it's usual happy little self. I had a nice night and although yates's was charging 15 to get in One was a better choice for me.Thank you for a pleasant couple of evenings and the company.

Andy
millwallandy1 - 2 Jan 2008 16:39
I am rather surprised with the last comment, as I was in ONE all over Christmas, and had a great time. Nick the manager even had a game of pool with me, cant be bad.
midnightpoolchampion - 30 Dec 2007 16:48
Hi all,

My mum and dad came up and together we went in to one over xmas and i must admit it was a bit quiet. what has happened One? No big smiles no big surprises no xmas spirit!I can imagine that nobody has a lot of money to cash out but at least offer us a discount as it was the festive season to be jolly, see a pool table is in alas we cannot play but it looks good in the pool room. Hope all is back to normal soon will try you again in a week or so.. Bye
lettyp - 28 Dec 2007 16:45
"midnightpoolchampion" you are class my friend says, straight to the point in small sylables. We love ONE too lol.We were in The station in SE3 tonight was not that good. ONE was better last w'end, more guys, U must look us out next w,end we will be wearing ????? woooooah... you will have to wait n see. We were in a few weeks ago I was wearing a 1/2 lentgh coat with a See through stockinette dress on. If you were there you'd remember. Friday night 10pm. I think I know who you are. you were standing at the bar with a big bloke, navy blue jacket with a blond bird about 5, 11" ?? Little cravat?I do so hope it is you our chauffer fancied you!
samanthaL - 18 Dec 2007 01:16
As one of the middle class drones, as referred to by an earlier posting " easyskip", may I say that I am really glad ONE is the kind of bar it is.Good forbid, if there was not a place like ONE in Lewisham, where could I go, and others like me, to have a quiet drink, read if I want, or, watch a big game, in such nice surroundings, and where staff, treat you with respect.
midnightpoolchampion - 17 Dec 2007 19:47
Hi guys!

I just love this place, it has got to be surely the most freshest bar in lewisham. I look at reviews all the time before going to a particular bar, club or restaurant and I was a little confused at the reviews in beerintheevening. A lot of folk are saying negative things about ONE but more are saying positive things so we took the plunge and went to see for ourselves.Liverpool and Man utd were playing (1-0 to Man u lol!!!!)so we went in to watch the game the telly's were huge and very warming and we met a friend we had'nt seen in a while. Im my honest opinion I really really had a good day in ONE and I was looked after by the bar staff during our stay. I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. It really is a nice bit to relax and chat with mates or just to watch the telly and read a paper as someguy was doing in the corner. The pub emtied rather quicky after that game but most pubs do that. I did see that a lot of supporters were not drinking a lot while the game was on in particular a group of about 6 or 7 who had 1 orange for the entire game. This was a pity because there were folk wanting a seat that couldn't get one.
We had a lovely day and we left to go to a local restaurant. If ONE had food I think it would do really well.I,m bringing my mum and dad in at the weekend and im sure they will love it.I was pleased to be met with a smile at the bar something you do not get much in bars these days. This bar gives you the feeling you are uptown London.
lettyp - 17 Dec 2007 12:35
Here here, I second that view leave the nit picking behind and enjoy what i realised yesterday too. One bar is about as good as it gets in lewisham. I have drank in many rougher pubs in London and home counties and its a blessing to be able to have a quiet drink in this one.No rowdy cheering nutters, slobs or coke crazed loonies. This bar is slightly ahead of the competition in South London when it comes to decoration, friendly staff and genuine people. What you see is what you get in one and i want to say that I think its great the beers good and the televisions are fine. Great for watching football. If i could change anything i would have food as i left early to eat and a later opening time would be grand too. I remember when it used to open till 3 or 4 am but is now closing at 12ish at the week-end which is a grand shame as there's not much more at that time to do in Lewisham.I'd give this pub a regular visit.
millwallandy1 - 16 Dec 2007 18:28
Sorry all but why would an ex employee's mum google her/his old workplace? Sounds like sour grapes to me.Ex employees are what they are EX's. No longer req'd.I was in one last night with my friends and we had a quiet night with no problems.why does everyone go on about ray? My man is better looking!
I like this pub and it amuses me to see so many negative attitudes towards it as i cannot understand any of them. The pub is what it is if you don';t like it dont go in it But don't spend all your time on a pc slagging it off thats a mental health issue you know! There are better things i can do with my time i find it all rather funny especially about the mice. Most pubs in Lewisham I know have RATS so a few mice are nothing in comparison I tried yates's last night too for the 2nd time, still the same mad place. One is better so it's a thumbs up for me
melissaobrien - 16 Dec 2007 12:51
This is such a good bar in what was once the white horse. Lots of people talk as though it's "the best in lewisham", I have to agree with them. If I had a choice of all the bars in lewisham I would have to choose this one. I would be happier if they had more choices of ale on offer but you can't please everyone. It is lovely to sit in especially through the back. I would recommend one to all that know me and those who do not and I can only praise the curerent staff who are doing a fine job indeed. No complaints from me.
ThePubSpy - 16 Dec 2007 12:39
Why? It doesn't fit the Lewisham perception - I prefered it when it was the White Horse......it's now a poncey ared placed filled with plastic middle class drones who suddenly think that you only need to drink in a pretend wine bar and you are no longer seen as the low rung of soceity. This is Lewisham, not f**king Notting Hill.
easyskip - 15 Dec 2007 15:11
Hi there! Wow... isn't it amazing what's found when your mum googles the bar you used to work in!

Georgie here (the 'Aussie chick') as i've been branded in previous posts. Just to get the record straight:

1. I wasn't homesick. I left because I was sick of the constant change in management and lack of communication between the owners and their staff...amongst LOTS of other reasons.

2. The owners and friends of them monitor this site very very regulary.

3. There are mice - angeleyes32, what you saw was real and they're not just downstairs.. they are all through the entire building and in the kitchen.

4. The previous manager was only escorted out by police because the owners wouldn't let him get all his belongings.

5. The only reason I didn't leave earlier was because of the lovely regular customers and Ray.

These sites are just a guide. If you're planning to go to Lewisham, then pop into One for a beer. See for yourself. But I can tell you now, One bar is certainly not the gold star palace that the last few postings have made it out to be. No pub or bar is prefect in every way.
Georgie.s - 15 Dec 2007 14:46
Donnam, look at my post on 01/11/07 (first visit) & 30/11/07 (next visit). I don't fit into any of your categories, I do however like to get out and about and try different pubs and have never denied that the One bar has potential and have recommended that it is worth a visit commenting positively on the beer. I don't see your point.I do see however that you are in the know about staff changes or perhaps you were one of the coppers that escorted that last manager.
thebrownbottle - 13 Dec 2007 17:33
Looks to me like the last 2 postings have been made by either
a. previous member/s of staff who lost their job/s
b. Someone who's been barred
c. Someone who's tried unsuccesfully to chat up a member of staff
or :
d. A person/s who obviously does not know the difference between a good pub and good atmosphere, good beer, wine and everything else this bar has to offer rather than every other bar in Lewisham. Why not reccomend a better bar rather than to try and run this one down. Anyone worth their boots would not drink in any other bar in Lewisham but bar onebecause it has everything the others do not. You know it too but you obviously have a problem with this bar and it's plain to see. The fact that you seem to monitor this site and write regular reviews about it proves that your views are not exactly healthy as you seem to have a personal interest in what people are saying about one bar, strange that beacuse as you say you don't like tha bar....Hey you're not the last manager are you who was escorted out of the premises by the law are you? One wonders!!
donnam - 13 Dec 2007 12:34
Well said angeleyes32! Talk about waxing lyrical! Yes it is a good pub for Lewisham and the local area but certainly not the saviour of drinking in SE London that previous posters have made it out to be. A site like this needs some degree of objectivity to remain uncompromised, not undue gushing praise heaped upon a bar because either;
a) you work there
b)your mates work there
C)you own the place
d)you fancy a staff member
Trade and public use this site for a number of reasons and this drivel is not helpful. RSVP.
thebrownbottle - 13 Dec 2007 11:40
LOL are the people writing these reviews friends of the staff or owners or something?!
angeleyes32 - 13 Dec 2007 01:27
I would just like to second the previous comments. I went into ONE on saturday night, and it was extremely busy, very good atmosphere. The new manager is a great improvement on the last guy, Nick and Ray made me feel really welcome, and took the time to ask me what I thought of the place, and was there any thing that I thought "as a customer" would make the place even better. I suggested a Pool Table !! so who knows.
midnightpoolchampion - 12 Dec 2007 21:58
My oh my. Tremendous, fantastic, exciting, beautiful and immaculate, and thats only the bar staff at this venue! What a remarkable turn around since it was the white horse. The new owners have certainly changed it around to make it the chic place it is now.The staff are very quick and know exactly what they are all about, I agree with the last review about the previous review whoever wrote it cannot be talking about one.Cocktails are in abundance as are the shots the wine and the lager selection. The atmosphere is what I would call pleasant but is definately there. I did however hear a story about a white mouse and as these are more common amongst pet owners ( you do not get wild white mice) It may have been a prank to cause bad publicity. Anyway One bar is truly exceptional when it comes to serving the customers needs and i will certainly be back as often as possible for another mohita. I understand that the manager is interviewing for kitchen staff so I would anticipate food back on the menu soon. It helps to talk to the staff rather than making assumptions. My boyfriend says that the san miguel lager is the coldest and freshest he has ever tasted.
samanthaL - 11 Dec 2007 13:48
I must say I too visit this bar regularly and I have never even seen 1x mouse never mind 2. The bar staff are actually very highly trained in making cocktails as the new manager used to run a very successful cocktail bar.The atmosphere last weekend was one that can only be described as electrifying and exciting (are you sure it was one you were in and not Dylans?).The "aussie chick" left because she was homesick and the reason staff leave is because they find it very hard to come up to the very high standards that the manager expects, which i may add make Bar one what it is.... A truly magnificent watering hole where the staff are trained to a very high standard. Who knows maybe the last review was made by a disgruntled ex-employee! There are a lot of peole who disagree with you I.m afraid. Still thats why we have sites like this so we may air our opinions and give peoeple the opportunity to see for themselves.Saturday just gone was the busiest I have seen it with a crowd in excess of 80 people. Surely that says it all. Great pub, great staff and great cocktails to boot!!!!
melissaobrien - 11 Dec 2007 13:27
I occasionally visit Lewisham and stumbled accross this bar a little while ago. Returning to the venue last weekend I was dissapointed. I saw 2 x mice run accross the floor in the back room, the Staff didn't really know what they were doing, no cocktails like there used to be, the mananger looked like he was about to cry and there was no atmosphere. There used to be an Aussie chick who worked there.. she was great and always friendly. Heard about the new managment... but isn't there always new managment at one bar? They don't seem to keep their staff very long. No food either - very dissapointing.
angeleyes32 - 10 Dec 2007 22:33
i'm going to bar one tonight as i fancy a good glass of white wine,a lovely view, pleasant company and so i can look at the barperson...Ouchhhh. did i really allow myself to say that i must stop Im beginning to sound lonely ....In any event one bar has all a girl needs and i'm going.Theres a new manager in there named Nick he's somewhat of a dish too although he does seem kind of shy in some way. There's a nice atmosphere in this place nowadays and i Hope it stays as it really is about the best bar in Lewisham with talent to match. Here's looking at you One bar keep up the good work
blackheathbabe - 8 Dec 2007 20:46
Had a last minute event with people to feed. Nick, Ray and the rest of the staff could not have been more personable and accommodating.
They did not have a chef available on the night we were there, but arranged a fantastic hot and cold buffet, which was delicious and great value. The staff created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, never intrusive but always anticipating our needs and available to help. I really cannot recommend them enough. The evening was a great success, due to their charming and helpful staff, lovely venue and accommodating attitude. A great night.
Oh and Rays done a lovely job of that Christmas tree, everyone said so.

Unreal!!!! Everything Lewisham needs and has done for a very long time. What a marvelous idea for a pub like this, puts the other pubs in lewisham to shame. The beer and cocktails are top notch, the staff very attentive, the decor upmarket, and lovely comfortable seats to park my botty after a long drawn out day.It really is a pub to contend with. When i walked in (i have been before)i was met by a good looking barman called Ray who quite simply will make any girl red. He is Sooooooooooo... goodlooking and he knows it. He served me while I was there and looked after my every whim and I loved every bit of one , ray and my cocktails. I cannot wait to go back which should be this weekend hopefully. Love one bar! Its sooooo coooool
blackheathbabe - 6 Dec 2007 20:40
I too wnet into one last night and i must point out that I also noticed a great change in the bar. The staff were different to the last lot and a lot more informative and polite. I didn't have to wait for a beer and I did not have to shout over anyone. I did ask about food and was told that they are having a chef problem at the moment but that it would soon be resolved. There were a lot of people who asked for food and left dissapointed so I do hope it doesn't take too long to resolve either. As always beer was beutiful and the company nice.Pubs in Lweisham will have to pull their socks up to compete here I think.
blackheathbabe - 3 Dec 2007 12:39
Made a return visit to the One last night and enjoyed a couple of good pints. There seems to have been a change in management, staff were polite, attentive and prompt in their service even though the bar was the busiest I have seen it. I saw no evidence of food on sale, shame really as I had to leave to eat or I could have spent all evening in there. I am slowly warming to this pub and certainly will be back.Keep up these high standards and the One will establish a solid customer base, as there is nothing comprable for decent folk in SE13. Pop in you'll be pleasantly surprised.Given my other postings on numerous other places this is a good recommendation.
thebrownbottle - 30 Nov 2007 10:40
Absolutely fantastic local bar! The staff are so cool, the companies great, the winelist goes on and on and the new barman's a dish and when i say a dish I mean a proper proper dish!If you like lovely clean comfortable seats (leather)a good view (the barman)good wine then this has to be for you. Went in last night with the girls for a couple and we ended up staying a little bit longer than anticipated. I'm going back tonight for more1 beats Blackheath anytime for me. You get normal blokes in this pub not plastic ones! Can't wait till the new chef starts soon i heard the food used to be about the best in lewisham.

Awesome dudes! A site that tells the truth about real pubs, grubs, gals and guys!I too have been to that awesome place they call One bar and what a night we've had some weekends there.Me n me aussie dudes went in to watch NFL one night a few weeks back and stayed to late...late...late the next moring (2 guys even fell asleep and we neva fall asleep dudes!) had a dandigeredo time i can say. Can't comment on the manager though about being a pervo he and his sheila gorgena looked after us and bought us beer most of the night.Think i only spent about 5 bucks and i had about 12 beers dude.. They even had in some of me favourite from home.Kronenbourge was awesome to. Solid good bro man. Put it this way Me n me muckers will be back. love to all at one just wish there were more watering holes like this one around where i live
blackheathbabe - 21 Nov 2007 14:20
YEAH know what you mean blackheathbabe. I was in one week past saturday or might have been sunday and I saw a guy like that behind the bar trying to impress the babes, i mean come on he is definately not brad pit but is kinda creepy huh!He touched some big guys woman at the bars butt and she got up and hit him in the crotch which me an my guy thought rather funny. I never knew if he knew them or not but in any event he got what was coming to him.My husband thought the big guy was going to kill him but it looked like the little woman was doin ok to me lol! I hate sexist guys dont you. The bar itself is rather groovy dont you think we go there quite a lot as we like the football and yeah, you got it cold beer is cold huh!We usually go to marlowes but its getting kinda heavy for us and we think One is cool. Maybe this guy may leave one day and we may get a non-sexist bar person huh!Keep sticking up for yourself babe and im for ya anyway!Oh the heating on would be good eh!
blackheathbabe - 21 Nov 2007 12:24
One bar in lee high rd, what can i say? It's about time someone with a bit of knowhow actually opened up a decent gastro in Lewisham. It's not the usual "watch your back" type of pub and has excellent cold beers (probably coldest in lewisham) and a great wine assortment. The guy behind the bar lets it down though. Name is Joel and a total weirdo, evry time I go in and he's there he always makes it a point to try and touch me or my friend as he goes by or comes to the table to drop off our drinks. If you do go in and are a female try and have your drink delivered on the bar and give him no excuse to come this side.. The other staff are a bit poker faced (they used to have a real hottie seems to have gone over the last week, big downside!) (yes i,m gay!)As a whole though I like the pub itself and some of the regular guys who drink in it are quite funny, drink a lot and like their football. One bar's a winner! If they ever manage to sort out the guy serving drinks I feel a lot more women would go into it...here's hoping....!
blackheathbabe - 21 Nov 2007 09:35
What a little "jewel". Came across this place on my way back from bonfire night at Blackheath and I was very pleasantly surprised.Very well done out very good cold drink (love wine) what a great selection. The only thing that spoilt it for me was the manager/bar man think his name was joe or joel. The 'man' is just a creep on two legs!just kept leering at me all night and if I had told my boyfriend I think joe or Joel would be no more.I have to say I tried to put this out of my mind all night and it felt horrible and uneasy with this really creepy bar man peering at me as though he was gods gift or something while I was trying to relax with a lovely wine and my boyfriend. The pub is great though I have to say just a shame about the staff! Could do with a bit more atmosphere but nonetheless a Pleasure One.
melissaobrien - 20 Nov 2007 14:19
I think that One is just trying to be One and nothing else. A problem we have in society is that we are always comparing things to other things. I'vre recently come across this place and was very pleased. It is os hard to find somewhere in lewisham where you're not in fear of being stabbed, shot or raped. I moved in to lewisham 6 months ago, having just got my first job since leaving Uni. As a young woman, I was surprised at what a crazy (not in a good way!!!) Lewisham is. You seem to bump in to the mentally unstable or criminal community quite frequently, whenever you walk down the street. Yates is full of Rudeboys that look like they'd slit your throat for a fiver and the other bars are not much better. So, to have a normal bar in Lewisham to go to is fantastic. The fact that I don't fear being sexually assaulted is a huge plus, compared to a lot of the other establishments!

A welcome addition to Lewisham. Will say however that it still needs to develop its niche in the market. Is it a gastro pub, sports bar or wannabe All Bar One?It certainly has potential to be a first rate watering hole. Stopped in on Tuesday night for a quick scoop, promptly served and not a bad drop either. Still lacking some atmosphere. Worth a visit if you are in the SE13 area, certainly less pretentious than similar bars in Blackheath.
thebrownbottle - 1 Nov 2007 13:57
A plesent surprise, finding such a nice bar in Lewisham, The wine menu is really very good, resonably priced. A few locals, not enough to spoil the atmosphere. A good place to relax after work friday night. Like the mixture of sport on the tv, but, music being played to create a party atmoshpere.
A good mix.
midnightpoolchampion - 25 Oct 2007 17:49
Went in to watch england v russia, obviously, not happy with the result, but I must say, it is nice to be able to go somewhere in Lewisham, where there was such a good atmosphere, not at all like the Lewisham you normally hear about. I found the staff to be helpful, and I must say polite. Well done management.
anonymous - 17 Oct 2007 18:44
I popped in for an afternoon the pint the other day - pretty poor. I said hello to the barman and was ignored, then asked for a pint which was served to me in silence. I asked if they did any crisps and got my first response - 'no'. The pub itself had all the soul of an airport bar. Felt a bit like I had wandered into a DFS showroom or something. To be fair it was a decent pint, and the girl behind the bar when I left seemed far more pleasant than her male counterpart, wishing me a cheery goodbye. Good luck to the place as be good to have more options in Lewisham, but this was not one to rush back to.
Shatners_Bassoon - 5 Sep 2007 15:38
Great pub, a massive improvement for Lewisham nightlife.
berth - 20 Mar 2007 17:14
It's kind of growing on me. The beer is actually great. A 1664 cold is actually cold!

As one of the rough, down and out, vagabond, tinker types that used to frequent the old White horse (anonymous posters have set the labels).

The one bar is finally getting an atmosphere, mainly when a large group of the white horse faithful meet up here. (wonder if we stood out in our typical lewisham chav clobber?) It's looking good for the future of "one" Good luck to the place.
Nut.nut - 2 Feb 2007 23:52
Back again and much improved. Bombardier in top nick. Barman John does an outstanding champagne cocktail. TV Sports with no sound, unintrusive and well-balanced music, nice mixed crowd on Saturday afternoon. Jolly Farmers is better for ale, but this is within striking distance of the station. 6 months on, it's a great addition to Lewisham, especially for those uninclined to hit Blackheath for its crap beer & food.
cablebasher - 27 Jan 2007 14:45
After listening to Charlton's defeat at Aston Villa (Sept 23), I needed a few drinks, so met up with mates in here. I was quite impressed with the fairly smart dcor, relaxed atmosphere and the efficient service of the friendly staff. I also appreciated the lack of "cheese" music and Lewisham plastic rudeboys/gangsters here. It is an ideal meeting place to start the night off, with nearby Lewisham station the hub for public transport in Sarf-East London (bus, train, black cabs and DLR).

I paid 15 for a pint of Magners and Sam Miguel as well as 3 pints of Kronenberg, so make out what you want from that figure about the price of drinks!

The restaurant section looks promising and if you fancy a change from Greenwich or Blackheath Village with its plethora of restaurants, it might be worth checking out the food. However, this place is out of character for the rest of the pubs in Lewisham. Approaching 9.30 on a Saturday night, it was virtually empty, so those who like the style of ONE, are presumably more likely to go to Greenwich or Blackheath Village for a longer night out. Overall, ONE is a decent meeting place for Lewisham on a Friday/Saturday night considering the other boozers nearby, but other than that, I would not come here again. Not searching for H-Files anyway!
Searching_for_H_Files - 25 Sep 2006 13:09
Great Pub all round. I must say that I never expected a place like this to work in Lewisham but after popping in the last week I was pleasently suprised to find it busy. I now no longer need to go to Blackheath for a good meal. And in our (Wife and I) opinion (even though only eating at One twice) the food is better than the places in Blackheath both in quality and price. Well done guys and thanks for always greating us with a smile and superb service
Danandruby - 5 Sep 2006 20:49
Had a great meal here recently. It has really improved since it was the White Horse. Before the refurb, it was known for being a pub for the scumbag variety of Lewisham population. You were more likely to get offered a menancing glare than a welcoming ,"What can I get you?". I love this new bar in its place. The staff are extremely pleasant and teh food and drink is great too. You still get he occasional, rough "ex White Horse" clientelle walking in occassionally. However, they are realsiing (THANKFULLy) that they don't belong in such a nice establishment and are moving on to the nearest Wetherspoonms (WHERE THEY BELONG!!!)

I love the irony of being chastised for commenting on One, only to read:

"I would daren't not have gone into the previous White Horse, which was known for being a pub for the down and outs of Lewisham. Since the conversion into a classy bar, the previous tinkers and vagabonds..."

My comments were based on its appearance, which with the invention of windows, I'm capable of judging without drinking and dining at the same time. If I stated the food was cold and the beer was flat without going in, then I could understand the upset.

Anyway, I've reset my rating of this pub to "Don't Know" to appease, and will - against my better judgement - have a beer here soon.
topdog_andy - 16 Aug 2006 17:53
I'm thankful that there is finally somewhere my friends and I can go to in Lewisham. I would daren't not have gone into the previous White Horse, whci was known for being a pub for the down and outs of Lewisham. Since the conversion into a classy bar, the previous tinkers and vagabonds have migrated to somewhere that suits them better...YATES'S.

I have to say that ONE looks as good as any bar in the city and is slowly (but most definately surely) attracting the decent members of Lewisham society . The food in ONE is top notch, both in quality and variety. The drink is also of a very high standard, as are the bar staff.

Moreover, I think it s very unfair that someone who hasn't even stepped into ONE can make such a vicious and unfair attack. To quote anyone with commonsense, "Know what you're talking about before offering an opinion". This place is destined to be a success
anonymous - 16 Aug 2006 17:02
I must say I am quite surprised by the previous
comment posted. We have long needed a venue like
ONE in Lewisham. My friends and I have started to
frequent this establishment, and we have only
positive things to say. Lovely staff, very smart,
presentable, on the whole a really nice place to drink.

Henry.V.Trap - 15 Aug 2006 16:41
Now called "One", which was coincidentally the number of customers I saw in it when (speedily) walking past.

This place is trying to do upmarket, but on the cheap. Kinda like it's nearest Lee High Road neighbour The Dirty South. Seems to be a pseudo-gentrification going on in Lewisham.

Doomed to fail. The old school White Horse lads won't drink here because the renovation was blatently an attempt to get them out. The aimed-for up(per) market in Lewisham won't drink here because

a - they don't exist,
b - if they did, they'd be unimpressed by the half-a**ed attempt to pull them in, and,
c - you can do up the pub all you want, but at the end of the day, it's still in Lewisham. To quote George Clinton (it's not everyday I get the chance to do this): "It's like trying to put a five-dollar hat, on a nickel-p*mp"

So long as Lewi-shites have enough bus fare money to get to Blackheath/Greenwich, this place will fail.
topdog_andy - 9 Aug 2006 13:29
Just reopened as"one"(sigh). Very nicely turned out, classy pub grub (steak sandwich etc not gastropub gubbins), serving Broadside. And here the tale ends. Rude, ignorant, lazy barman denies amoebic cause for strong, vinegary stink of ale to me & older gent from council office nearby(!) Sack him & sort out your cellar or wave goodbye to your investment. Could be a real find if the nice, knowledgeable barmaid is given a crack at the whip...
