please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Been in here a few times now and have always sat in the garden which is decent enough although you don't get any river views from here.
Only ever drank in here so can't comment on the food.
Also less stuck up in here than the Fishermans Cot so better for me.

8/10 The best pub in Bickleigh.

I thought TimP's phrasing sounded suspiciously like that used by others writing their own praises, and guess what? a first time poster. Clearly he has something to do with the pub (owner, friend?) 0/10

Visited today on a complete whim! Pub under new management and thought we would give it a go as they have a new children's playroom(we have a 1yr old). Our visit was amazing, staff and service were friendly and efficient offering us some very thoughtful hospitality. The pub it's self is in great shape and the play room is loaded with toys. Our daughter was in heaven. And then there's the food. We had the muscles and they were to die for-the best we have ever eaten, knocking our favourite Cornish fishing village haunts off the top spot. The food is outstanding!!!!! Fish fresh in daily from brixham and meat from a local farm shop just down the road. You can't get better-what a find. Needless to say we will be visiting again very soon and I would thoroughly recommend this place. A totally family friendly pub with food that is some of the best I have ever tasted! 10 out of 10!

Wife and I had very good Sunday roast yesterday. Pub reopened under new ownership end of last week. Rarely pass that way, was on our way for a canal walk at Tiverton. Was going to stop at The Cot 50 yards up road but it looked crowded. Good move going on to The Trout. Lunch made the 100 mile round trip worthwhile. Overheard Chef ask two other diners who did not have the roast to comment - they were positive. If standard maintained should see more customers once word gets around. Has real ales as well.

I would just like to make everyone aware that "indyanna" would be spending a lot of time at the trout, due to the fact that she owns the trout. This is infact the licencee Tracy Grant using her daughters name to rave about the trout, due to it standards falling and her knowing that its getting a poor review online.
I am a very reliable source.

Just had lunch there today. Wife and I had a sandwich each which was served with salad - OK, children has macarone cheese and garlic bread 4-5 each and it was obvious their food had come from a tin - I tasted it and it was really sugary - nice one heinz!

We intended to eat outside as we were tempted by the childrens play area - very limited and very tired looking as was the rest of the garden - including the benches which could have done with sanding down and a good coat of preservative, all in all outside was very rough - cars zooming past along the road, although not the fault of the pub itself do spoil the ambience - in the end we were forced inside by wasps....which wasn't much more pleasant to be honest - old uncomfortable dining furniture, though a decent high chair for the youngest, decor dated too.

Beer was OK though.

Stayed here for one night in August, room was nice, breakfast excellent. Have had a few evening meals here....cod as stated is nice, but I have had better from a 'Superfish', the steak was nice and tender and came with a nice sauce. It seems to attract a mixed bag of customers in the evenings, but then variety is the spice of life, so no problems there. The service was good and staff friendly but the beer garden had a bunch of youngsters ( male and female ) who were using colourful language ( no surprises there ) one of the lads who was too lazy to walk 20 yds to the toilet, urinated in the beer garden...great if anyone eats at that table the following day. Definitely needs a bit of staff presence in the garden in the evening....and in case he reads this...keep it in your pants son, or drink coke until you've grown up a bit more.

I am new to the Bickleigh area and found The Trout quite easily. Their huge car park was almost full, as was their beer garden. They display a very extensive menu outside the pub so you can browse before you enter and we were spolit for choice - there is literally something for all tastes.

We were greeted by a very friendly young lady who couldn't do enough for us. We had a beautiful bottle of wine (from an extensive wine list) and after a lot of delibertion choose our food. This arrived after about half an hour which given how busy they were was very prompt. It looked good enough to eat!!!! I had a local whole Sole and my husband had Cod and Chips. Both were absolutley gorgeous and my husband said it was the best Cod he had ever had!!!

The waitress then offered us desserts which were on display in a huge cabinet and were very mouthwatering. How could we refuse?!?!

Luckily for us this pub is on our doorstep and is now our local, espescailly as we are non smokers. We have eaten there five times in the last month and have never had a bad meal (although booking is essential as they are very busy). I would urge anyone to go out of their way to try it out as it one of the best places to eat.

Our neighbours go there regularly as they have climbing frames and bouncy castles for the kids as well as a toddler's and children's menu.

We always go to the Trout Inn for lunch when we visit the nearby Devon Railway Centre (which is highly recommended) as its far less pretentious than the Cot (the other pub in Bickleigh). I've always found it welcoming enough. The food isnt terribly adventerous though and I do remember being served some mayonaisse that had gone off, last summer! However it is extremely reasonably priced for a country pub especially if you go for the cheesy chips and a sandwich type fodder. It serves good real ales including Exmoor.

It does have a superb beer garden though with a good kids play area with, sometimes, a free bouncy castle. Its nice sitting there with a pint of Exmoor ale, a bowl of cheesy chips and listening to the trains from the Railway Centre. Plus you can always watch the cricket if they're playing on the green behind the pub.
