user reviews of the Dukes Head, Walthamstow

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Was in the area and need somewhere to stop for an hour.

Interesting "rock bar" vibe inside - dark walls, 70s rock music piped - but loads of kids running around. It was only 17:30 on a Saturday so no idea what happened later.

Small DJ area, lots of room inside, food area at the back (with its own loos!) but not separated.

Good, cheap JHB beer, 3 portions of decent fries for £7, friendly staff, worth a follow-up!

7/10 for now!

Recently re-furbed and re-opened as The Duke. Cannot rate yet as not visited.

I remember walking past this pub a few years ago to visit the Flower Pot. I didn't go in at the time. Maybe I should have, as I now appear to have missed the boat. The pub is currently closed. I'm not sure if it's just for a refurbishment, or whether it's closed for good. But the inside did look like a building site.

My partner and I went there last Friday. We walked in because we heard a really good band playing live music. They were great, the atmosphere was good and everybody seemed to be enjoying it. When they finished playing the landlady refused to pay them the agreed fee while being rude and abusive towards the musicians yelling things such as: 'Take it or leave it... and then F off' and much worse than that. It was so uncalled for!!! Plus she did it in front of us and the remaining customers who were also disgusted at her behaviour.

I haven't been in that pub in months because it is always too quiet (I wonder why) and I won't be going there ever again. Disgusting!

Okay in it's own way - locals pub with sizeable band space. Was quite a mixed clientelle when I went in but the lcoals aren't the most endearing and the ale (a pint of Hotspur in this case) could have been better and was a struggle to drink.

I very much agree with previous reviewer, 'steviewonder' that the regulars on first entry stare, and there is a lack of a welcoming vibe. 'Cliquey'. Lager ok, bright pub which is nice. Live Rock music seems popular there, slightly dated, which probably reflects with the predominately aged clientelle.
Shan't be going there in a hurry.

Fantastic live music at weekends it can be a little daunting if the locals stare (they dont bite, only when hungry) It's a big pub therefore feels a little empty at times landlord has improved this pub, credit to him. Certainly could improve the service a little, its fairly slick but the odd cheers mate, thanks would be nice. Potential to do better but has improved a lot in last 2 years!

Teg must be the bald Landlord who has been barred from all the decent pubs. Keep all the riff in your gaff.....

A revolting smell hit me when I walked in - service was quick but beer not great. I felt extremely uneasy in here as if in the wild west! Some loners stared at me as if I had 2 heads.

Thats one to cross off my list, think I will stick to the village as this place did not impress me one little bit. From reading past comments, it seems its got some way to go to get shot of the bad press. It could well start by sorting out a decent niff in the place.

A desperate excuse for a pub. Crap beer, sullen service and better when virtually empty because, by Chr!st you dont want to be in there when its full.

Been there 2.5 times. Its local but the best thing about it is that it keeps the dregs out of the Flower Pot & the Plough

Christ, give me strength! My review was 18 months ago. If it has changed for the better then so be it but I would hazard a guess that the addition of a pint of Bass and something to mask the smell would make this a 10/10'er. Are you really putting this place on a par with the greatest pubs in the country? I would suggest you need to venture out a bit before you start having a pop at people who have reviewed hundreds of pubs on this site over many years. At least I have noticed that I never gave the place an actual rating. 3/10 is generous from my memories but should cover things. Thanks for drawing the place back to my attention again.

I think Roger B has not a clue about pubs because the dukes head is the best pub around walthamstow it's clean & tidy.Good choice of beers & real ale (bass) very nice pint, nice & frenidly bar staff.I came here with my mates for the live bands & disco nites and it is a fantastic nite out.If you like sports came to this pub because it's got 7 big tv's. 10 out of 10

Now to be Fair this pub rates well when Expose (live band) play here on a friday, good atmosphere and usually a good nite out. Pool table and live tv are also a plus and drinks have been ok. Service a little slow sometimes. Holds some good memories for me.

go here if you are keen on being beaten by p*ssed oiks with pool cues. Its the worst pub in London in my book and I have been to a few shiteholes. Run by people you imagine would dump mattresses by roadsides and tarmac your drives badly. Frequented by the absolute filth of the area. Sorry to sound harsh but the quicker this place is demolished the better.

I was hardly in here long enough to write a realistic review but unfortunatley the stench from something resembling toilet cleaner was so overwhelming we didn't stay long enough even to get a pint in. It doesn't look like we missed much. A rather bland, soulless and featureless interior. No ales. Nothing particularly inviting at all. On the plus side they have occasional live music and a few screens to watch footie but there are far better pubs in the locality should we ever find ourselves with time to kill.
