....just to emphasise on the cost of drinks,.....

My usual Lager was 3.20 before Christmas, then quicky went to 3.25 in the new year,... followed quickly by 3.25 2 weeks before the budget and was shocked to be asked for 3.40 after the budget,.....

Apparently one of the beers is around 3.60,... (this is compared to 2.50 in Lloyds in town)

Obviously they are trying to cash in on the summer and world cup etc,.. but at this rate I'll be paying 4 by Christmas,.... I have a feeling they will soon start losing their regulars, including me,....

They have new landlords now and even have a tv,.....

The place seems to be pretty busy on a Friday night with a good atmosphere,... and it can only get better with the summer fast approaching,......

Drinks are too expensive tho...... only down side really.

It's a brillaint location and always lovely to vistit. Especialy when the weather is right. I would reccomend to anyone to visit here. As Basingstoke only has The Basingstoke Canal... it's always nice to chill by the water and drink in the Summer!!

From what I remember the current landlord has now been in just over a year. In that time he has turned the pub around, into a great pub.
The ales (Wadsworth) are very good, but I did notice that during the summer (busiest time) that although drinkable they hadnt stood long enough.
The food has improved big time - Everything looks and tastes as though it is cooked fresh!!!
The prices arent cheap but you do get value for money.
As an experienced ale drinker and someone who likes a friendly pub with good ale and nosh, I would recommend this pub before any other in Basingstoke..

...been going here on and off for about 15 years,.. and now a regular since the Cromwell has closed,....

Doesn't have music, is a little small, and when your having a few beers on a Friday it is a little odd having so many poeple around you eating,..?.. also 3.25 a pint is a little expensive,

...although, it does have a good atmosphere on a Friday night,... and I always look forward to going!

Only dropped in for a swift one as time was ticking on my train but I was quite impressed by the place on first viewing. The location is lovely and there was a good range of Wadworth beers available - the two I was able to sample were both good - expensive though. The expansive interior was quite dark aside from the bar area which might not suit everyone. The quiz machine wants to pay too. Overall, worth a visit for a slow beer on this showing.

lovely location by the river, friendly staff always helpful, the food there is good and the resturant next door is great. a lovely place to sit our and unwind on a summer evening. family friendly also.

Nice location, bit slow service wise and a tad food orientated.

tadley_musher - 13 Feb 2009 14:09

winchesterclub - 13 Oct 2008 08:49
I see the Landlord of the Wykeham arms in Winchester has taken over this pub so it will be intresting to see how he gets on here, Two things though
1 He does"nt put the crisps you buy into a wooden bowl for you!
2 He does bring Georgie Palmer the South Today weather girl with him as she does drink in the Wykeham from time to time !
winchesterclub - 3 Oct 2008 12:48
Great location, food good if overpriced, real ale excellent, staff friendly in general, needs permenant managers not the recent merry-go-round
clangersmate - 30 Jun 2008 13:03
What the hell happened to this pub?! It used to be such a great place to go, but the recent landlords have ruined it. Unfriendly and clueless - if the brewery is reading this - sort it the hell out! You've lost the custom of 10+ regulars who have been drinking there for 10 years or more already...
iloveTEA - 21 Dec 2007 17:22
Poor quality overpriced food. No atmosphere and difficult to find a seat although the pub is half empty. Godd beer though so might try again in the summer.
arferjob - 10 Nov 2007 00:56
The smiley woman with Crystal Tipps hair has now left "the building" speaking to various punters from the pub they said the previous couple just could"nt handle running a busy pub!(mind you in the summer it does get crowded,)Let"s see how the new couple get on look more like porn actors from the 70"S than Crystal Tipps!
The beer is still of good quality always has four different ales to try, agree with the last poster though from the outside you think WOW once inside very small and chairs at a high premium, still now it"s winter the three quarter lenght trousers are packed away for six months!
winchesterclub - 29 Oct 2007 12:28
nice place in a great location,..... packed when the sun comes out,....

so expensive tho, and kinda boring if it's raining and your stuck inside as its really small and there is never a chair,

oh and watch out for the beam infront of the bar which takes ur head off if your taller than a midget,...

Gone has sergeant major Charles!
to be replaced by a smiley woman with crystal tipps hair,The pub is expensive for what it is but you pay for the location they always have a good range of Ales on tap the 6X is always good as was the Empire pale ale!.The sun comes out and so do the three quarter lenght trouser brigade! but the garden is big enough to keep your distance
PS .if you have a dog bring him along as everyone else does!
winchesterclub - 27 Apr 2007 12:07
The landord is the rudeist and most miserable I have ever met. Does he want my custom or not? Never mind as he has lost mine for ever. Also very expensive.
bish80 - 24 Oct 2006 00:27
nice place. loved the patio and the stream. great food
fanornot - 21 Oct 2006 00:00
brill little find
nice oldy world place with real ales, beer garden in which you can chill out and watch the ducks go by
bevvymaster - 10 Oct 2006 12:20
Very nice, I suggest that they reduce the drinks prices by 11p, so as to be both better and cheaper than the Cromwell.
raywest - 18 Apr 2006 22:18
How much??? 3 a pint?......... i'd atleast expect 1 or 2 greased poles with half naked women spinning around them for that kinda price?

nice in the summer for a quick pint,.... but other than that, not a very friendly atmosphere, over priced, small inside, and kinda boring really, oh and be careful not to knock yourself out on the beam in front of the bar,...

Summary: go to the Cromwell,!
anonymous - 10 Feb 2006 17:05
Sheesh. 3 a pint for Anams Broadside, Guinness or a standard lager.
Its a lovely setting, but call the bank manager first before visiting.

The outdoor patio is one of the best places to be a warm summer evening. Nice mix of people, good selection of both Wadworth and Guest Ales, all in good form. Food is fairly basic pub food with a few interesting specials. Solid value and a good time away from Basingstoke town center.
Mr.Matt - 22 Jul 2005 21:32
Not but they usually have Summrsault on in the summer. This week, they had Danish Dynamite and Midsummer Madness - yum. The Queens Arms by the Railway station had Summer Lightening on recently.

Excellent pub. Great food, beer, atmposphere.
anonymous - 22 Mar 2004 12:31
I have heard that this pub is the only one in Basingstoke to serve the gorgeous 'Summer Lightning' from the Hopback Brewery. Does anyone know if this is true?
Alexh1982 - 18 Mar 2004 10:19
Fantastic place with great bar food and superb ales. Avoid Friday lunchtimes unless you enjoy the company of shallow office workers talking about photocopiers.
raywest - 12 Jan 2004 17:47
Brilliant summer pub

Remember going here and being surrounded by people preparing to take part in an English Civil War re-enactment. I stood out like a sore thumb as they were all dressed the part.
