There seem to be chronic communication problems between staff here which resulted in the wreckage of our New Year celebrations. Arriving in Bodmin on Dec 31st and finding nowhere to eat, the friendly Masons barman invited my good lady and I to join in the buffet. So far, so good, so many quid behind the bar in drinks. Then as midnight approached, out marched the landlady to demand an explanation as to why we were eating the locals' food. One embarrassed donation to the 'charity box' later and we had to leave quietly. Some way to treat your customers!

It's a few years since I've been in the Masons. The new landlords have only been there a few months and seem to have settled on 2 regular beer (Cornish Coaster and Sharps Own (so much better than the far more common Doom Bar, in my opinion)) plus a constantly changing guest. There had already been over 70 when we visited, so they must be getting through them at quite a pace. They do basic, good value pub food - steaks, burgers etc. in a nice dining area out the back with views over the Jail.

Paul and Wendy are the new landlords as of today and they look after their customers and their beer extremely well...One of the warmest welcomes I have ever received in any pub to date...I wish them both the very best for the future. Brisons was the current guest ale served at just the right temperature...A definite pub to return to.

A seemingly popular locals pub on a busy road out of Bodmin. The regulars were a friendly bunch. For real ales lovers, they had 2 Sharps beers - Cornish Coaster and Doom Bar, in addition to Exmoor Stag.

The Masons is a regular appearance in 'The Good Beer Guide', and it's easy to see why. The beer is consistently good and they serve good food in the restaurant round the back (down the stairs, mind your head). The last time I was in there they had 3 barrels on their stillages on the bar, kept cool with ice packs. I don't know if this is to be a permanent arrangement, but the beer was good - glass full to the brim, no head, just like I like it.
