Visited with a group of Tandem Cyclists and took over the whole of the restaurant. The service was excellent, the food for a Sunday Roast was more than ample and the friendly manner of all the staff was able to make a lunch stop a special occassion. The beer was at just the right temperature and the choice excellent

Used this pub most nights night when serving a 3 year stretch at Reading (University) a while back (OK, 4 decades ago..). Have been back from time to time and is still one of the best pubs around. Garden great and inside is welcoming. Unchanged on my last trip, showing a winning formula need not be improved. Good walks; next to where the Baskervilles came from (inspiration for Conan Doyle).

Visited on BH Monday mid-way through a long circular walk & although things improved was v disappoinrted to be greeted at 1:45pm with comment - " You're lucky we are stopping food in a minute!" Bizarre comment to give to 6 hungry/thirsty customers.

If it had been rammed would have been more understanding but garden was less than half-full & dining room completely empty!

Otherwise a reasonable food offer - though it took 45 mins from ordering.
B'spears Oxford Gold was lovely!

A 4 for service 7 for offering

Paul and Trish are back.

Fantastic little pub once again serving the Excellent quality and Value pub food. They have some excellent offers on at present too.

We went on Friday and had Fish and Chips for 2 and a bottle of wine for 20. The fish was excellent, it's great to see the batter being made with the Brakspear beer when your there, truly fresh.

Beer is always of a good quality, nice atmosphere in the bar area, can be a bit quiet in the "Restaurant" area but the more people that go the better that will be.

Have been in this pub a couple of times recently for lunch, and it could definitely become a habit. The food is really good, served in reasonable time, and the staff/owners are welcoming and friendly.

Passed this lovely little Pub on a 10 mile walk this last weekend. We purchased 4 pints of beer and sat in the less than full beer garden. Whilst drinking our beer we decided to consume the small wrap of salad that we had brought on the walk. It wasn't a feast as we were having dinner later. We were rudely accosted by a lady, who I assume was the landlady, and told not to eat our wrap and just finish our beer.

Obviously the owners are within their rights to set their own policy and we gave her no argument and complied with her request, but were then again rudely addressed as we left. Frankly disgraceful treatment of people who had contributed to their days takings.

We would not have eaten our food inside where people were consuming meals bought from the Pub, and we were not blocking a table outside where others might have consumed meals they had purchased. The policy, applied with rudeness, would not have made us buy food, and I am sure we were not encouraging others not to buy food.

It was a shame really as the beer was very good and the food we saw served also looked nice. We just mistook the place for a Pub. Won't make the mistake again.

My wife & I love this little peaceful haven. The food is delicious, very well presented, of a high standard, theres a wide choice all of which is very reasonably priced. An added bonus is that it is always served very quickly. The staff are friendly & efficient.

The building & country setting is idyllic but its best feature has to be its large well seated garden. The tables in the garden are well spaced out & even when it it busy, it is still comfortable. Dogs are allowed if on a leash & its children friendly.

Situated in between Caversham (Reading) & Henley its the perfect getaway spot to chill out on a sunny day. Theres plenty of parking & easy to get to.

They are a Brakspear Pub & so naturally as you may expect they have Brakspear Oxford Gold Organic Beer & Brakspear Bitter on draught.

A cosy, country pub that serves very good food and a selection of beers, recently taken over by new management. The twee thatch and the pretty garden might attract the passers by but the food should be the main reason for visiting from outside the area. Delicious and well presented, I am yet to be dissapointed. Definately worth visiting if you are walking in the area or even planning an evening occassion or working lunch.

This is a pristine and picturesque thatched pub with two small bars, both equipped with wood burning stoves. My wife and I were three-quarters of the way along a circular walk from Henley and just looking for a light lunch. There is a cosy feel about the place and the landlady and her assistant (daughter?) were friendly and helpful. Two cask ales by Brakspears were available, a third pump was untagged. My pint of Oxford ale was fine. The lunchtime menu appeared averagely priced for a country pub of this kind. Hot food served to an adjacent table looked really appetising. We opted for one Stilton Ploughmans and also a serving of Hummus , Pate & Olives, both nicely presented on wooden platters , together they cost 12.50. We shared these and thought them an adequate lunch for the price. Our overall impression, a nice pub and a pleasant experience.

Visited ths nice looking place this evening as I was looking to find local pubs with good beer and good food that i could recommend to visitors of an international event which is being held nearby this summer.

Whilst the pub and beer were fine, the menu seemed quite expensive but as it was close to Henley and the River Thames this was half expected. The size of the portion of fish and chips served however was ridiculously small given the price tag of 9.50p.

When asked afterwards if the meal was ok we told the bar maid of our disappointment but there was no comment let alone and apology.

A few minutes later a comment was made in the kitchen which was heard in the bar that went something along the lines of... "if that want a job they should go fishing for on Brighton pier..." As David Coleman would say, Remarkable!

Don't get me wrong I'm quite happy to pay good money for good food but this was not good and someone in the kitchen was downright rude.

Suffice to say we won't be going back and I definately won't be including it in my recommendations.

Great little boozer. Larger is without a doubt the best kept in the area. I had a brewery mate stop over for a weekend, and he commented on how great his pint tasted.

Food is generous and well presented. Good quality.

If its sunny, the garden outside is very relaxing and on a quiet road.

My only gripe - the 'locals' tend to congregate near the very small bar and it can be a fight to get to the front. On a busy evening, the queue can go back to the main door. It all adds to the character of the place though, I guess.

Excellent Pub Food and superb Beer. Lovely Garden. Best pub in the area for sensibly priced propper pub grub. Comes highly reccomended. Landlady is very efficient and staff friendly and welcoming. Just how a pub should be.

One of the nicest pubs in the Reading area. Excellent pub grub. Used to sell Brakespears Old. Thatched pub and nice beer garden.
