oh for the happy days when Peggy and Karl ran it a proper pub - never mind - if you like expensive beer and pretentious food or are a visitor going to the IOW and dont know where else to go....

Sorry to say but the place has changed hands.
It is renamed as a bistro and is very overpriced, terrible service and looks like a transport cafe.

The food is a poor attempt at creating small expensive quality servings - typical starter is two small fishcakes that look like small scotch eggs with a hot chilli sauce (5) main course... a bucket of mussells (12) makes you feel sick after six and thats your lot - nothing with it whatsoever - ripoff!!!

Beer was warm and tastless.

Cosy pub, changed hands a while ago, and the food is nowhere near as good- the restraunt is also very cramped too.
Food now ok, but nothing great for the price.
Nice staff and nice bar, if cramped (!)

Have been here a few times in the last year. Clientele can seem a bit posh at times but no hassle and a good atmosphere.
Enjoyed a meal there as well, good emphasis on fish, a bonus given its location to the fish market. Only downside was a hen do near us that were very noisy, the acoustics where we were sat were not great. Almost enough to put us off our meal. Not kill joys just very noisy.

food is not cheap but you get what you pay for.

Would reccomend.

Great little pub, great food, good beer and all the bar staff are very good looking - the girls and the lads!

Great pub, really friendly staff and good location. A hidden jem in old portsmouth. Food is great whether you are after a lunchtime snack or evening meal. Gorgeous garden which is lit by fairylights - you really feel like you are in another world... very relaxing! I would highly recommend this pub.

I cannot believe I am reading about the same pub here. Anonymous and Southern Beer have not got their facts right.

The current owners (same people as Rosies a Pompey institution) are in their fourth year at The American and the food just keeps getting better!!

The food is always fresh the best steak my partner has ever eaten. The main menu is not the cheapest but you pay for quality and for something that is different from elsewhere this is not your normal pub grub.
AND they serve food ALL day very useful.

The staff have always been incredibly welcoming and provide a great service.

Yes anonymous, the bar can get overcrowded but this is because so many people are using the bar! So they must be doing something right.

As far as drinks go

Bit of a lager led pub but have different offerings than most including Leffe on tap!!
The two ales - Directors and Adnams are not the most exciting choice but VERY well kept.
The wine list is great which is probably due to the pub being owned by the people from Rosies, and their selection of spirits offers drinks that you cant get elsewhere.

If you are after something a bit different then I would recommend this pub it is casual but quality dining and drinking.

P.S they have a lovely garden for the summer. not too many of those around.

used to be great little bar. not so much now.
was taken over, and now the food is Dire - poor quality and VERY overpriced.

Apart from the food, the bar is tiny, and had a 'locals' feel which is nice, but the restaraunt side has expanded, and you are no longer welcome in those parts unless you are eating the sit down overpriced food, so the bar is now too small and crowded.
Shame, used to be nice balance.
Drinks OK, food very poor and overpriced.

recently sold, now the food definatly is NOT great, just 'ordinary' but is very overpriced now.
Usual selection of "city' bar types of beer, and sugar laced drinks,

Nice location, though have had complaints from 'local' residents of late about noise levels - the bar was here before you were !
so plod regularly visit now, which has taken the shine off this nice little bar.

Great beer, nice courtyard, excellent service. Food pretty good, though slightly expensive.
