please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Didn't think it was that expensive but I am used to paying London prices. Went in here twice over the weekend and had Fools Gold, Seafarers, Brit Hop and HSB. Tried the food on both visits and was not disappointed. Service was OK and the staff were friendly .

only one reason Vic,because gunwharf is full of tw*ts who don't care, take a 5 minute walk into southsea for some decent pubs

THE MOST EXPENSIVE PUB ANYWHERE - WHY?
tradervic - 8 Jun 2012 23:30
Reasonable pub. But the prices are far too high - 8+ for a large spirit (50ml in total) and a dash! I know no other pub, anywhere, charging these prices - and the food is very average - with students and agency staff serving.

There seem to be plenty of good pubs in Portsmouth, so why this one made it into a recent GBG is a mystery known only to the local CAMRA branch. The building itself is nice enough from the outside; it would make a good museum or even a top-end restaurant but it's not got the ambiance of a pub at all. Then again it's a strange pub where Pimms seems to outsell beer. Speaking of which, I promised myself I wasn't going to complain about prices again, but 3.60 for 3.6% in a tied house? Come on...

Only place in Gunwharf where you can get an ale but tremendously expensive. Pint and a glass of rose came to near 9 quid the other day - that hurts. 'Beer garden' has heaters but is surrounded by the high brick walls of the shopping centre. As another poster mentioned, best used for the occassional pint whilst shopping rather than a place worth visiting for itself.
gravedigga - 7 May 2012 14:22
Nice food, though portion could be better for the price. 6.30 for one glass of wine is ridiculous ! Get real. Would have stayed longer but not at those prices.
Debbies_Star - 21 Jan 2012 19:33
I don't agree with all the over reviews...yes this is a Fulelr's corporate place but it's slam bang in the middle of a shopping centre (all be it a nice shopping centre)...what do people expect.

It is a bit pricey but it was cheaper than The Victory over by the station.

Never eaten here so cannot comment on the food, 5 Fuller's ales on tap and i had a few Bengal Lancer's which were excellent.

Staff were okay, but it's a place to stop for a drink or 2 while wandering round Gun Wharf Quays not a pub you would spend hours in.

Visit yourself and make your mind up.

Over the top prices, coupled with utter mediocrity in food, sevice and beer.
tradervic - 8 Aug 2011 15:23
Double Smirnoff vodka (50ml, total) and a dash of coke - 7.10! The most expensive pub anywhere?

Service quality is low and the food, mediocre.
randolf7 - 26 Jul 2011 10:50
Hated this place! It's clearly geared to making money from it's food trade - but at 5p short of 4 quid a pint they obviously want to maximise profit on wet sales, too! I was largely ignored by staff, presumably because I didn't want to order food (sorry, but I come from the age where food comes from shops or cafes, PUBS ARE FOR DRINKING ALCOHOL!

Had quite a pleasant pint of Spring Sprinter in here after bad experiences at Slug & Lettuce and All Bar One.

Original building it may be but Fullers inc. corporate interior rules the roost. Primarily an eating house but plenty of space for drinkers (albeit on high chairs or sofas). Pleasant enough for what it is but the ale was sadly inadequate on this visit - the Gale's Spring Sprinter was not at all a nice pint. Pleasant enough surroundings but at the end of the day the beer is what it's all about (isn't it?).

not wishing to highlight steviewonder's disability, but what he sees as a purpose built mock up, is in fact an 18th century Grade 2 listed building.

The food here is good and although a bit pricey, compares well on quality and cost with the many other resaurants in the large Gunwharf Quays shopping/leisure complex.

The great advantage of this place to others nearby though is that it's a proper pub and restaurant, rather than a restaurant that does beer or a trendy bar that does food. The high footfall in the complex means that they are able to sell a wide range of Fullers ales and I've never known one to go off before sold. The Bengal Lancer is a gem.

If you're an ale fan, take your partner shopping over Easter weekend as they also do a mini beer festival, although in 2010 they were running short by Saturday evening.

Packed full of pointless people who think that shopping will solve all their personal misfortunes and therefore will not be of the discerning type. Previous reviews have been spot-on, huge place with all the Fuller's corporate trimmings- run by teenagers and fake chalk boards- beer- as fuller's generally is, very good indeed and an ok choice too. So- cleaner than your aunties toilet, but a lifeless experience. Drink the beer and get wasted gently, if you can ignore all the children running about.
alezilla - 8 Jan 2011 16:47
Nicely busy on a Saturday lunchtime - staff were friendly, beer was good - shame it has to be in the middle of a shopping centre!
hotrods - 7 Nov 2010 03:55
Multi-roomed Fuller's house marooned in the heart of the fairly-recent Gunwharf Quays shopping centre, which gives an indication of the target customer base. The external proclamation of 'Traditional Pub' should therefore be taken with a pinch.

Food is a significant part of the trade during the day, which is very good and priced accordingly. I enjoyed the daily special at 10.95. A pint of Seafarer's Ale cost me 3.15 and although it was in excellent condition, I was struck by the fact that it is cheaper to buy it on the Isle of Wight.

If you are pressed into going on a shopping trip by the missus, this will no doubt be a very acceptable spot for lunch. To judge by the decor, I suspect this is just what Fuller's are aiming for. And why not?

Portsmouth Harbour railway station 5 minutes' walk away.

Purpose built mock up with corporate after taste, clean & pleasant enough but boring! Head to old Portsmouth for the real thing!
steviewonder - 16 Nov 2009 15:29
This pub is very busy at weekends. They do not inspect the toilets as often as the chart in them would suggest, that they should.
Service in the bars was swift and cheerful. A pint of Gales (Fullers) Seafarer was satisfying.
jbsjazzer - 28 Aug 2009 14:28
Situated in a shopping/restaurant area called Gunwharf, this is a modern-looking pub attracting a young crowd at the weekend. Beers are from the Fullers range. There's plenty of different seating areas and it's large enough to find tables and chairs even when busy. Fairly good apart from the limited selection of beers.
blue_scrumpy - 22 Mar 2009 20:07
A very pleasant diversion from shopping!! Cracking pint of Fullers, nice comfy seats....could do with designating one room for rugrats though.

I love this pub! When ever I visit portsmorth I always pay it a visit. Extremely friendly staff and management!! Great products!!! Good atmosphere!

A very styilish and well-done conversion of an old naval builing (from when Gun Wharf was part of HMS Nelson) into an airy pub-restaurant.

I hate to say it, but a good pint of Fullers. Well worth dropping into if you're shopping at Gun Wharf.

Can't really call this a pub as it's more of a restuarant that just so happens to serve beer. With that said it is very nice. Plush decor, good service, tasty food and a range of 5 or so Fullers beers so worth a visit.

Highly recommended for famillies and great for just resting your feet after a bit of retail therapy around Gunwharf. Not the sort of place if you'd go on a night out but great if you want somewhere to have a sit down meal.

8/10

Very good pint of HSB, intresting looking pub.
petergoesrock - 24 Jan 2008 11:18
Full of bar flys and the most stupidly small bar for a pub of its size.
anonymous - 22 Oct 2007 18:02
they sell desperados, which is the beer jesus would drink.

Very decent Fullers pub, doing the full range of beers, with quite superb food.

Quite a strange pub in its layout. Lots of little rooms and corridors but I guess that the name suggests that. A nice pub if yoy fancy a few quick quiet ones after a days shopping, bowling, cinemaing at Gunnerswharf.

I came here with my girlfriend and her Mum while shopping in Gunwharf Quays Sunday afternoon (12 Nov) following our Petersfield H-File. This is a quality pub with character in an impressive location. There is plenty of spacious seating area, divided into smoking and non-smoking areas in several different rooms.

Delicious food! I had the BBQ half chicken, while my girlfriend enjoyed her cod & chips and her Mum equally enjoyed her shepherd's pie. Along a drink each, everything came to under 28 I think. Bar staff were friendly and efficient at the time.

Apparently, this is the only traditional pub in the excellent Gunwharf Quays. For me, it is also a quality place to relax between shopping. I have been here in the summer last year and it was superb, given its location and outside seating area. Will certainly come here again when next shopping in Gunwharf.

Nice building altogher seemed to lack a bit in character and atmosphere to be a really nice pub. Staff didn't seem too interested either, which was a shame.
helenof - 17 Oct 2006 17:27
Beer is excellent. As 'dixont' says, there are several different rooms and I found it amusing that each separate room was occupied by one person who seemed to think that he was entitled to be the sole occupier of that room. Didn't try the food but the toilets were cleaned to the sort of high standard that you'd only wish other pubs would emulate. To sum up then, great place for a beer but lacking in atmosphere due to most of the clientele lacking basic social skills.
johnkn7 - 18 Jul 2006 13:25
A great pub in the middle of the Gunwharf development. Worth sitting outside almost any time of year for the surroundings.

There's a restaurant upstairs although haven't tried that yet, but it looks good, just like the rest of the place.

The only old building that has been retained in the new Gunwhary Quay developemnet. Serves very good beer as this is a Gales pub. Very nice seating area outside and this pub has several different rooms that make it quite interesting.
