This pub is open again and under new management; friendly landlord Morgan is pulling out all the stops to make this venue 'Great' again, offering Real Ale, live music, pool, darts, pub games and various event nights. A welcoming hotel too, at very reasonable prices. Check it out!

So sad it has closed AGAIN.
wortman - 18 Jul 2013 16:51
Appears to be closed at the moment.

The not so great western hotel. I booked 2 nights at "The Great Western", and had the worst time of my life, the pub itself smelt of tramp,

Upstairs - the toilets stank, the bedroom was tidy until you moved something then you would see the dirt and the dust, the bathroom was revolting toilet was not clean and the shower was disgusting just grim, there was no toilet roll provided.

Customer Service- All I was hearing was I will be with you in a minuet over and over again.

In the end I went elsewhere I was not staying there for 1 more night NO WAY!

I would NEVER recommend this accommodation.

A pub that has changed a lot over the last year - and for the better. Gone are the anti-social mob, the under age and other undesirables (I wn't go into detail). Smart furnishing, great bar staff - if you're lucky you'll get to meet the great Tee-Jay, and two real ales. No food though which is a shame as there is a large hotel kitchen that is just not used. Live music at least once a week.

Was quite surprised when i went in the other day, not to bad, although you do get the feeling you are drinking in someones front room.

Open again after being closed for a bit of refurb.
wortman - 22 Mar 2011 23:33
Needs a huge cash injection to make it a great place..cos it is in prime land.
wortman - 10 Mar 2011 02:14
Cloased AGAIN.

With the Queens Arms being in the station forecourt it's easy to miss the fact that this pub is equally close to the BACK entrance of the station (just across the car park). A bit drab looking, and only one real ale (Spitfire), but at least there's always plenty of space in here, everyone's friendly, and there's a wonderful curry house literally inside the pub, which we couldn't fault at all.

Weird old place - one light on at the top room but empty and dead downstairs. Must be scary staying at this hotel. Despite the boards outside advertising events I believe it is closed.
DrinkingJoeFrazier - 24 Aug 2010 13:25
Pub has now re-opened, but it was closed when I tried to visit (well, it was 4pm) so was not able to review. The sign outside advertised live music.
ETA - 19 Jul 2010 07:30
Yes closed. In actual fact the the notice board outside sais. 'CloSed Till fuTher NotiCe'.

Must get in to here again to see if it has changed..but not on gay nights i might add!!
wortman - 4 Sep 2009 11:37
Recommendation? - AVOID at all COSTS
wolvesfan - 11 Aug 2009 11:05
Ventured in simply because it has such a fantasically low rating.

In fairness, I didn't see any trouble, nor did I feel that there was any danger of some and I invited danger by using the pool table! The clientele seemed fairly Rock/Goth like, no obvious scummers.

As for the interior, if this place has been refurbed I'd love to see how it was before - it looks pretty naff with chairs and tables sourced from Steptoes scrapyard.

One beer on - Old Speckled Hen - which apparently was 'fresh on'. If the barman thinks that is a fresh beer he needs to change his underpants more often.

Overall, certainly not the 0.8 score currently displyed but I think it might struggle to get much past a 4.

Sorry "wortman" could"nt resist it !
Had a pint in there a couple of nights ago (not the gay night!)

winchesterclub - 21 Nov 2008 16:34

wortman - 28 Oct 2008 13:58
10 August.. not sure if it's closed for a while but it's being given an exterior face lift..cool..it looks ok.
wortman - 10 Aug 2008 14:57
There are equally awful pubs of the same name in Didcot & Swindon. I've come to the conclusion that no no pub called the Great Western is ever any good.
Dan137 - 18 May 2008 00:34
Such a great looking building. What a waste on zombies..der!
wortman - 9 Mar 2008 15:18
Extremely dodgy - they used to use this place to train the SAS in unarmed combat:-) To be fair though I have not ventured in for a while and it might have improved (but don't hold your breath)
revbrianlovecraftscott - 28 Feb 2008 17:28
I walked passed the other afternoon..definitely has been redecorated, just need the the hutzpah to go in!!
wortman - 22 Feb 2008 13:51
Good place for bear knuckle fighting.

fiftyfive - 3 Feb 2008 12:03
Oh......My......God
I've been in some dumps but this takes the biscuit. Screaming kids climbing on the bar, a couple of yobs swearing at the top of their voices because there was no music on. Even the furniture is like camping stuff.....Please - if you have any self-respect, never, ever go there. I was tempted to rate it '1' because the Guinness was drinkable and it's Chrismas but then I thought better of it.
Tracerfire - 24 Dec 2007 21:49
Dire.
grimbo - 11 Dec 2007 22:22
Oh my god what is going on in this place.
He must have been a good chef to have fish fingers on the menu!
Unless you have a screaming two to three year old give this dump a wide berth.
I give them till christmas, good luck you are going to need it.
anonymous - 1 Sep 2007 10:52
It must be open again today cos a new sign in the window reads: 'OPEN AGAIN TODAY'.
wortman - 28 Jul 2007 13:52
Notices on the doors say. 'Still closed for redecorating.'
wortman - 24 Jul 2007 14:42
Should be opening again today. Good luck!
anonymous - 23 Jul 2007 10:38
Closed again yesterday for a refurb.
wortman - 21 Jul 2007 13:34
open again monday 16th july.
anonymous - 10 Jul 2007 20:17
Closed again. Boarded up.
wortman - 24 Apr 2007 12:46
I went in the pub yesterday, and it is depressing and dirty. A wall has been built where the old hotel eating area was, and the only drinkers in the pub on my brief visit looked about 14 years old. Avoid
Alexh1982 - 23 Mar 2007 12:10
Don,t want to frighten anyone but it may be reopening soon.
anonymous - 15 Nov 2006 11:35
I went past the pub this morning and stuck on all the closed doors was a notice, 'CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.'
wortman - 12 Sep 2006 18:20
Don't bother unless you want want to spend your time with urine smelling alcoholics who have been ther since 8.30am
cb1 - 17 Jul 2006 11:05
It's not one of my favourite pubs. Not too nice at all
Alexh1982 - 4 Feb 2006 16:39
