user reviews of the Nelson, Cowley

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A hellhole for years, renowned for drugs, violence and all manner of illegal activities. Will definitely not be missed. Sadly the lowlife will only infest another pub in the area, not sure which one yet.

Used to be a really nice public house when Liza was landlady new owner mr brewerton should find himself another topic of interest as has not a clue about pub trade pub is full of reprobates and has a disgusting smell about it staff are always chewing gum and on their mobiles a lot of trouble at weekends so give this one a wide birth

Hilarious. No ales, so went for the Guinness but one has to remark on the clientele. From the man who informed me that his nine-year-old son at the bar was 'one of eleven' to the people eating Pot Noodles at the bar, The Nelson is the home of the weird and wonderful. I would have felt slightly intimidated if it weren't for the fact that I was sporting a black eye from football the previous Sunday. Check it out for the novelty value...

Stuck my nose through the door and retreated sharpish. No handpumps and the place was chockful of chavs. This place is the antithesis of a pub.

Visited on 22/04/08.

Initial observations are of a sprawling, low-ceilinged pub adjacent to the Templars Square shopping centre. Drinking areas broken up somewhat by partitions; some exposed painted brickwork and a reasonably relaxed colour scheme. Part of the local "Halls" chain.

No real ale available - keg Tetley bitter was served clear and at the right temperature.

Food served until 8pm, a wide ranging but fairly standard chain-pub menu is on offer. Did not eat and thus cannot comment on the quality.

Pub is very sports-oriented with several TVs, and a large screen is used for major events. Dartboard and two pool tables.

Staff seemed pleasant enouggh when I visited, but the pub was fairly empty at 1900 apart from a few harmless, well-scattered lone drinkers.

Although not my favourite pub in Oxfordshire - it deserves a fair review. 5/10.

Avoid this shithole like the plague. What a dump, full of nutters.

Looks like a nuclear bunker.

Officially Oxford's worst pub. Always felt unsafe going through the doors, this place seems to attract the dregs of Cowley. Always seems to be dirty and dark. No real beer (all gassy lagers).Hopefully now that Liz has gone the brewery will spend some cash on the place. For it's position should be packed every night but it isn't... tells you everything really .AVOID....spend a couple of quid and get the bus down the Cowlet Road instead.
