Impressive Brakspear's pub. Busy on a Tuesday after work and good to see the bar not male-dominated. Brakspear's Bitter and Special on as well as Ringwood Fortyniner with wide selection of bar snacks. Bright, but not in a 'makeover' manner as still retained that 'pub' feel. Of the pubs in Twyford, this would be the one I would come back to...

A nice pub, fairly busy when I went and handy for the train station, the friendly Landlord greeted me on the way in and when I left. 3 real ales available, I had an average to good pint of Ringwood Fortyniner, one of the other beers was Brakespear's Oxford Gold, not that local as the brewery in Henley closed down a while ago and the beers now brewed in Witney. Beer is pricey 3.70.

A decent pub that would fit in well with any Great Western train line pub crawl. Homely and friendly with a locals feel despite being situated on Twyford's sleepy high street. Brakspear's is King here as you would expect just a few stops on the branch line from Henley.

I urge you NOT TO DRINK IN THIS PUB. Reason? They serve a local ale (Brakspear) but at a price I would expect to pay for a special imported beer. I went in this evening and was charged THREE POUNDS SIXTY PENCE for a pint. That's more than they ask in London. There's only one way they'll learn a lesson...Boycott the place!

Very busy yesterday - there'd been a BBQ on in the afternoon. Beer was fine but the garden could have done with a clear up - glasses and plates everywhere.

Visited on a Friday night. Pub was pretty full but there were still a couple of tables free. Beer was good. Recommended.

Nice pub with friendly staff and big garden. However, give the food a miss, unless you like bog standard pub grub obviously cooked from frozen.

A Brakspear-owned local, which feels small and homely despite there being two rooms and a 'dip'. Two 'Refresh' ales usually available plus a seasonal (so make that a Brakspear Bitter, Hobgoblin and maybe a Special) which are usually in good shape. The people behind the bar are a friendly lot and the punters are usually a good mix of people. Three TV's hook in via separate feeds so sports fans can watch multiple games at once. Some of the interior has had a recent refurb but a fair amount retains an air of being stationed somewhere in the late 70's.

It's a nice little place and I'd recommend it if you're nearby.

This is one of my favourite pubs because...
1) It does very good beer. There are three cask ales - Brakspear, Brakspear Special and a guest ale. They are reasonably priced (under 3) and so far, they have only been a couple of occasions where I have been in and one had been unavailable. Good choice of lagers and wine too.
2) Great atmosphere. The staff are friendly and so are the clientele. It has a very welcoming and inclusive feel.
3) It is excellent for sports. There are three large widescreen televisions spread throughout the two bars and the landlord is very clever in managing to show all major sports events (football, rugby, cricket). They also show match of the day on a Saturday night, if you request it.
4) Good food. They serve food at lunchtimes from Mon-Sat. It is a basic menu but is priced accordingly. This is sensible because Twyford has great Italian, Thai, Chinese, Greek, Fish and Chips and numerous restaurants.
5) Great staff. Always friendly, nothing is ever too much trouble.
6) Good beer garden. Great in the summer.

Grumbles? It can get smoky in there and sometimes it can get busy at random times, i.e. not just Fri and Sat nights.

this old pub was where i spent a lot of my childhood years as my grandmother vera shanahan / gibbs ran this beautiful old establishment along with both husbands jack shanahan passed away around 1967. i believe they ran this pub for approximatley 20yrs. my brother and i spent many a holiday there going for long walks and enjoying a cold pepsi and crisps. in 1977 my family emigrated to australia. in 1984/85 my nan and her 2nd husband, norman gibbs, emigrated here.
all i have left from the duke are a couple of babysham glasses and photos. in 1988 my husband and i made a trip over to the uk and i went to visit the old pub and trying to remember how things were. i would love and photos of the duke inside and outside just to see how things have changed please send to my email address. thanks heaps for any info recieved.

Decent pub for a couple of pints before going on to one of the restaurants in Twyford. Two lounges, one with a games machine and TV, plus a smaller one that's a little quieter. Never had a bad experience.

You can reach it in a 6 minute rail Journey from Reading Central (if you know the train times!) -it's 5 mins walk from Twyford Station.

Good pub- shows the football, good seating, good atmosphere, Chinese takeaway across the road, Indan restaurants within 50 metres for post beer food. Nice beer garden and good parking

A cosy, friendly local near the town centre. Two bars one of which is nice and quiet whilst the other has music and attracts a younger clientele. Excellent Brakspear's Bitter and Special with an occasional seasonal beer on the third handpump. A little gem.
