user reviews of the Three Tuns, York

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Poor choice of ale; Banks' Bitter (which even Tesco's cannot sell for a pound, other stores are available) Pedigree and, saving the day, Hobgoblin.
The walls are adorned with mouth-watering past pump clips. I don't think today's clips will make it up there.

this is our usual starting point on our trips to york always has a good selection of beers available, with it`s central position it`s spot on to any pub crawl starting point. could of done with some winter warmers yesterday because i think the boiler must have broke down, nice pint of snecklifter though, be back soon, cheers.

I must say the exterior of this place flatters to deceive a little, as it is charming and well-preserved, though once inside, while not all the fine old features fade away, it certainly doesn't quite have the appeal that one might guess at on the outside looking in.

The Three Tuns was a bit of a punt on a night out last Saturday when we ran out of GBG-listed boozers in the immediate vicinity. That's not to say it wouldn't be worthwhile as in York many pubs that would pass muster in less-saturated districts are kept out of the Guide due to restrictions on numbers. Beer-wise, the options were quite unimaginative, with Banks' probably being the most exciting. Saying that though it was served with a smile and found to be kept well enough. Not everywhere in York wants to be a cask ale mecca.

This place had an immediate impact on arrival; there was a sort of 1980s party vibe to it. Some sort of hen nite (sic) or something similarly tawdry was in session, but it made for a lively atmos. Music was playing and by-and-large there was a friendly feel. Unfortunately one of our number almost engaged in a tussle with one of the less-friendly locals, but mercifully this was avoided. Because of the slight tension this created we felt it prudent to move on, but in fairness to the pub this wasn't their fault.

Definitely one of York's earthier and less-pretentious pub offerings, this perhaps is a reasonable counterpoint to the rather more slick and rarefied experiences of say the Last Drop, Brigantes or Pivni.

Popped in during lunchtime for a soft drink & to get out of the cold. Traditional, long, dark, narrow building with low roof beams & bench seating all the way down one side. At the bar there was a rather dull choice of beers from Marston's, Breakspear & Banks. Glad I wasn't drinking.

Fantastic old pub with beams and low ceilings - very good pints of Banks Mild too.

Plenty of character, well worth a visit if in York.

Previous descriptions are just about spot on, with the emphasis definitely on food at lunchtime. The ceilings are quiet low and consequently there are warning to Mind your head. 80s music was gently lilting in the background.

On my visit, there was a choice of Jennings Bitter, Marstons Sweet Chariot, Wychwoods Bountiful and Hobgoblin, Ringwood Old Scrumper and Banks Bitter.

The Bountiful was served in good condition, and if you are undecided about your choice of ale, you can have three one-third pint samplers served on a custom made wooden tray. This option costs 3.30, if memory serves me correctly.

Prompt, friendly service.

Jason the landlord is nick-named Pork Chop Lord only knows why, but he was certainly conspicuous by his absence..

6/10.

First visit to this pub. Only went in because it was close to a venue I was going to. Had a very good pint of Banks Mild and the food being served looked good. Would definately go in again when I am in York

Visited this pub occasionally for many years. Good location, bit shabby but I choose pubs for beer and this one usually has a good choice.
Visited yesterday and had Batemans EggsB which was sour and quite clearly well past its best. We were told it was fine, that the landlord was very experienced and that nobody else had returned it. We were refused an exchange.
In 20 years, I've never encountered refusal to exchange off beer in a real ale pub. Not being able to tell that beer is off, or having a policy which takes no account of that possibility, is not acceptable.

Another of yorks great pubs, good choice of ale, full of old character and charm, well kept pub and well worth a visit, just be careful of the low ceiling!.

Nice little (Or not so little boozer) as it is quite a long pub this one I stopped by here for a few pints after a big walk. A bit dark and dingy but thats how proper old style pubs should be. Worth a visit.

Looks a small pub but it stretches back quite a way. Bit dark and gloomy on the inside but a relaxed atmosphere.
Four real ales, Jennings Bitter, Jennings Cumberland, Banks Original and one called Wild Thing which I tried and didnt think it was very wild more like Bland Thing.
Lots of Toby Jugs above the bar and the tables were dark.
The barman had a blue mohican but carried out his duties very well, a credit to his proffession. Dont judge by appearances.
Im usually Len Goodman but today Im Craig Revel Horwood. 5.

Very much a place to be seen circa 1986 - 1992 but now a run of the mill ale house in the touristy part of York. An unremarkable experience with plenty of competition in the area makes it one I tend not to bother with.

A beamey, dark dingey but clean pub. Lots of hide-away snug corners. Used to be a good city centre drinkers pub but is now more food orientated and the beer was a bit disappointing. Will always pop back to this pub though for old times sake!

A pleasant old pub, serving good beers and handily in the centre of town. The atmosphere is pleasant and all round pretty good.
