user reviews of the Mark Cross Inn, Mark Cross

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Hugely overrated. Food is very expensive and I'm not convinced about the quality - my burger was over 12 and it was overcooked, nowhere near to the standard at the Blue Anchor in Crowborough which is a lot better quality and value.
It seems as though it's very much a place to go to be seen in or to tell others that you've been there - image over substance I suppose. My biggest gripe is that the owners needs to make up their minds as to whether it is a pub or a restaurant - if its a pub then ensure you reduce the price of the beer (4+ per pint) and food, and make it welcoming for children (I got the distinct impression that kids were not welcome by both the staff AND other customers). If it's a restaurant then improve the quality of the food and say that it's an over 21's only establishment - that will please all of those people who don't want kids around when they go out to eat (short memories - we were all kids once and most of them are actually quite well behaved)

Had a fantastic meal again at the Mark Cross, the food is consistently good, the pub has a great atmosphere and now table service. 10 out of 10

second visit.
very over priced for the mediocre food. Dont know what the awards are for but its not the food.
they must make vast improvements if they are going to compete with the Middle hhouse or the Blackboys inn. my last visit.

Visited yesterday evening and enjoyed a very nice meal (featuring proper hand cut chunky chips and a proper enormous hand made steak burger) and a few very pleasant pints of ale from the Westerham brewery - crystal clear and well kept.

Definitely a "foodie" pub but a good one IMHO

went in on a Sunday recently with wife and outlaw for lunch, food was OK, beer was OK, but prices not too clever - outlaws battered cod/home made chips/mushy peas was actually rather a small portion, not that she could have eaten any more anyway but that's not the point - it was 11.50 which is somewhat of a piss take. Otherwise style similar to other Chaser pubs but we won't be going back if I can help it.

I dont usually praise pub companies individually but in my opinion (for what its worth) I havent been unimpressed in any of the the Chaser group pubs Ive been to, the chaser, the mill,or this one! they are always busy so to be honest whoever they are aiming it at, it works! on the subject of paying 2.90 for a pint tell me any where decent that isnt charging within those price margins

I take the point about the 'Tardis' aspect of this pub. You go into what from the outside looks like a rather ordinary village pub - and it's vast; it just seems to go on forever.
Somebody's obviously spent a lot of money doing the place out - and in a way it's very impressive. But who's it all aimed at? The Chaser group obviously has a lot of fans on this site, so maybe if I'd gone in later in the evening I'd have found the place humming - but I have to confess that to me it all seemed totally ersatz, and really rather soulless.
Still, it was an experience. I don't think I've ever had Harvey's so heavily chilled, and I'm pretty sure I've never had it dispensed through a sparkler. Interesting - but not interesting enough to make it worth 2.90 a pint. Still, I suppose they've got to pay for the refurb somehow or other.

A 'tardis' pub - it is a lot bigger on the inside than it looks from the road!

Really nice wood decor with loads of books on shelves and lots of sections.

The views over the Sussex countryside are superb from the rear garden. Although the B2100 runs alongside this garden (the pub is near the junction with the A267) there's a high hedge so you can't see the traffic. When I went there, a dog was frantically chasing the cars up and down this garden, although he couldn't see them, and was prevented from harm by the white picket fence and hedge.

Old Speckled Hen and Harveys on tap.

Worth a stop when touring the area.

(A hourly bus, no. 52, from Tunbridge Wells takes 1/2 hour to get to the Mark Cross garden centre and then it's a 5 minute walk)

Just been taken over by the same people that have The Chaser Inn at Shipbourne and the Old Mill in East Grinstead. Closed for refurbishment until early May 06. Watch this space

Newish establisment - family run, seems friendly enough if a little 'sausage machine'. Good grub, if very familyish. I think it's changed hands once or twice, but still it's not bad.
