Awful pub, popped in one Saturday evening with wife for drink, waited for ages, bloke behind the bar poured himself a pint before serving us. Full of chavs and wide boys, one of which stared constantly at my wife. Wife made us leave before I said something. Joke pub and landlord.

Visited on30th June.
Had a decent meal in lovely surrounds...Woman behind the counter was miserable and unfriendly...Could have ruined a good visit if i had let it.
Her attitude could have started trouble between nuns.
Put a smile on your face love...

Avoid this pub - very unfriendly owner (actually asked us to move table because regular customers were due in and wanted their favourite table! - no reserved sign on it), old-fashioned decor, awful food.

Was one of a party of 28 for a pre-arranged lunch. Couldn't have been better. We all chose individually on arrival from the full menu yet good food was delivered hot and all at the same time. The staff were efficient and friendly and the bill payers commented that it was less than they'd expected.

24th May 2009.
Our family party - three adults, two young children and dog Sam enjoyed the informal rustic outdoor setting for first class food, served by a team of bright ladies. On a warm summer bank holiday Sunday, it was good to have a varied menu of excellent dishes at a moderate range of prices; the children finished with profiteroles and creme brulee, and there were some meaty titbits for Sam. We hadn't visited the Walnut Tree for seven years - now under the care of Thierry and his colleagues - and will be back.

Good pub food but high prices for the quality of food. It is just good pub grub and doesn't justify the high prices. Also often poor service and this is after 5 visits this year in various size groups of people.

Went for dinner at the Walnut Tree after friends had recommended it and the location was ideal for a family get together. Looked up the contact details and was disappointed to see the poor reviews. Still I trusted my friends more and I'm really glad that I did, as we had a great night! The staff were lovely, the food was good and the beer was nice too. It's not a high-end "Gastropub" that's going to cost you 50 a head but the food was high quality, with generous portions, reasonably priced and all home cooked (my slow roast half-shoulder of lamb was delicious). At the end of the night I mentioned the reviews to the staff, which I think prompted the response below and rightly so. The Walnut Tree is a great place to spend the night in front of one of their real fires. I'm going back!

My wife and I have been cleaning at the Walnut Tree since April 1999, and we would like to say that as we are the cleaners, the food delivered to the pub is fresh in every day from reputable suppliers, and is certainly not from Brake Brothers (no offence to them), nor is it re-heated by the more than capable kitchen staff who have always done really well in dealing with lots of covers within any one day. We have ate there too on numerous evening and weekend visits, and found the food to be of high standards, hot and well served. The staff are courteous and make people feel welcome and overall prices are reasonably comparable to most traditional public house/restaurants that you would perhaps visit. As regards to wine prices and food charges made by other visitors to this site, we can only say if you want takeaway prices then perhaps visit a local supermarket, because one would expect to pay extra at any establishment where you are being served, and not doing it yourself

I have revisited and my original review is no longer accurate after nearly 2 years. Standards have dropped noticeably and prices have been hiked for the food standard so I've asked the moderators of this site to remove my earlier review. 4/10 and I'm being generous.

Very disappointed. Booked for 13.00 for a party of 6 on Sunday 14/10/07. Arrived 13.10. Showed to table. Selected from vast blackboard menu. Waitress took drinks order within 10 minutes. Took food order within another 10 minutes. No Roast Beef available. It took another 45 minutes for the food to arrive. Waitresses present what appears to be hot plates - far from it. Plates luke warm. Typical Brake Brothers pub food heated in oven/microwave. Member of our party had to ask for the Duck to be re-cooked. Potatoes could have been from previous day - no flavour. Service not good and would not recommend. The kitchen staff could not obviously cope with a busy clientele. Why do Pubs insist on Brake Brothers pre-prapared food if they cannot heat to an acceptable standard with good presentation and at reasonable prices. The Pinot Blanc charged at 11.90 could be bought in for 4.95. No would not go there ever again.
