Quality pub, friendly barstaff - talked us through a selection of whiskeys with a decent level of knowledge on each one. Good place to end up in at the end of an evening!

I really don't understand why some other locals have written such horrid things about this place.
Before it's recent re-fit it was a grubby old pub, with moldy, sticky carpets. It was dark, gloomy and smelt bad.
It's now bright, airy and still maintians a lot of traditional features such as the wood panneling and open fire places.
The new owner has worked extremely hard to make the place appealing, and to my mind he has acheived this.
Whilst this is still a pub, they do offer table service (for drinks alone is fine). But should you choose to order food then that's equally fine. The food is of good quality and very well priced. The average starter is only 4 and the mains are about 6.50... so not pricey (especially for Highgate).
I cannot stress enough just how welcoming they have been to us and our friends. We will continue to visit this pub regularly and suggest that others do the same.

Another wonderful local pub with loads of character transformed into a soulless laminated nightmare. I have no idea what the owner/brewery/landlord was thinking.

True its previous incarnation was a bit tatty around the edges, but it was nothing that new carpets and a fresh lick of paint wouldn't have solved. Instead it's been turned into an Ikea showroom.

Dreadful.

Visiting the in-laws in the neighborhood I gave this place another chance. Great job too.

Gone are the TVs, faux rustic tat and the smelly carpet.

In with well kept beer, amazing value food. Outside to the sheltered smoking in the charming garden for a post-prandial cigarette, then back in to read the weekend papers in front a roaring real fire.

refreshing!

Pub has been transformed.

Lovely staff, good beer and wine and good food.

This is no longer a pub - it's a restaurant, complete with breast-feeding mums in the bar on Sunday lunchtimes. (I'm pro breastfeeding, but not in bars). Worse still, it's a restaurant pretending it's still a pub - so you can't book a table. The worst of both worlds.

Not a million miles from having a drink in BandQ

Walked in then walked straight out again. This pub is now in ruins. What a disgrace.

The pub is very welcoming. Friendly staff and good food. The food menu changes monthly.

Somewhere to go for a drink or a meal rather than just a drink and a meal.

Was in two minds when I went in after the refurb as whilst the old RL&S had its faults, it was the best place in Highgate to watch football. They've now got rid of the TVs so there will be no more drunken cup final days there which is a pity and one could also argue that the re-decoration is rather bland - think battleship grey. Also, the failure to retain some more of the period features of the old front bar area is a bit of a crime.

Having said that, the old landlord was a right grumpy bastard and the new guy seems very keen to make things a sucess, although better customer service/English lessons for his staff would go a long way.

They have the usual selection of premium lagers, wines and one or two ales and the food is usually good and is in places good value, although the prices may well creep up in the coming months.

In conclusion, a welcome addition to the Highgate drinking scene, if nothing else because it has a late licence.

I went into The Red Lion and Sun early on a Friday evening a few weeks ago for the first time in over a year. Unsurprisingly it has been converted into a completely non-smoking establishment. I would imagine that any pub that has a refurb from now on will revert straight to a no smoking policy, but hopefully some (unlike suggested in the details above) will avoid being made into a gastro pub!

Ill give the staff 10/10 for eagerness and the pints of Amstell I had were very good. It wasnt very busy and you could tell that it hadnt been open long, but I saw no obvious reason why this place cant become very popular, if it already isnt.

This is another pub that can go onto the endless list of pubs that I can take the other half for a spot of lunch.
