user reviews of the Kings Arms Hotel, Buckfastleigh

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Kings Head is split into two bars which are entered via a main lobby. The 'sports bar' on the right has a jackpot machine, dart board, sport screen and pool table. The main congregation of this area is a mixed younger crowd, there isn't bad language or any bad vibes. The main bar is long and does consist of some very comfortable settees. There is always two local ales, mainly Cotleigh. They are always of a good standard at £3 a pint. The clientele are friendly, mixed between locals and blow-ins. The landlord is decent and solid. The walled beer garden is very well tended too - with an abundance of different flowers to join you for a midsummers pint.

I have come to the area for a holiday and after reading the reviews thought we would go check it out. The place was lovely and fresh and the Cider was lovely. we had been to another pub while waiting for this one to open and i have to say i was so much more relaxed at this one. There were games to play and with an 18 month it helped as a distraction for a while.
We will be going back to enjoy another pint.

The current owners are doing a brilliant job, definitely worth a visit, so glad they are doing food soon too - have heard the new chef is pretty good. Hurrah!

I am a regular at this pub ever since it was bought by its current owner. Beer is excellent, lovely garden, very friendly landlord, occasional live music, pool table, darts. He is currently renovating the kitchen, so food will also soon be available.
Please ignore the old posts!!!

Two posts on the same day, singing the praise of this pub. Both from first time posters.....Anyone smell fish?

I visited The Kings Arms in Buckfastleigh last weekend and sat in the lovely garden enjoying a refreshing beer. It is a family/dog friendly pub.
The new owners are welcoming and friendly and have worked extremely hard to turn a rundown and rather scruffy pub into a good place to spend leisure time, in the few months they have been there.
I would recommend you visit as you won't be disappointed.

This pub is now an extremely welcoming and friendly place to spend time, whether during the day in their delightful garden or in the evening in the comfortable setting of the bar. Since the new landlord has taken over this pub has really been turned around. It is now a clean, family-friendly place where all are welcome. The beer is not only good but also competitively priced. This pub is worth a visit if you are in the vicinity of Buckfastleigh.

My girlfriend and i visited this pub after a long wet day on the moors.
It was probabaly the worse pub we visited that day (I can't believe how many pubs are in this area!)
We felt a little uncomfortable with locals giving us evils the whole time.
Not really for us 4/10

This pub used to be a very nice place for famlies and now it has gone down hill thanks to the landlord and me and my family heard him slagging off his staff to other staff and customers

Oh My Goodness! I have never, ever complained about a meal before, but feel very strongly compelled to warn the world about this "pub". We received a leaflet through our door boasting of the wonderful new menu, under new ownership etc. It sounded very promising indeed. However my gut feeling upon arrival was "let's have a swift half and leave" but my very magnanimous husbund was all for "let's give it a go, it's important to support local buinesss.". A pint of Stowford Press was 40p more than in our local pub in Ashburton, the surroundings were a bit dire, but nevertheless we stayed. We didn't push the boat out and ordered a lasagne and a steak and kidney pie.
Upon our arrival the chef was sat in the bar watching "Kelly's heroes" with two locals. After our food order was placed he took 10 minutes to go to the kitchen. 45 minutes after our oder was placed the "food " arrived. Well, unfit for human consumption was an understatement. Unused to complaining we looked at each other and wondered could we pluck up the courage to complain. Well it was so bad we did. The chef was lovely - he brought out the landlord who clearly hasn't done the customer care course. In fact the scene whcich ensued was reminiscent of a scent from Fawlty Towers. The landord was so rude it was comical. We walked out - OMG so out of character for us !
We went to An Ashburton pub to eat instead and then went on to to a party - it's amazing how many people we spoke to tonight already know of the bad reputation this pub has -it's a shame that we didn't.

Turned up soaked through after cycling over Dartmoor in the pissing rain. We were made to feel very welcome and the landlord let us dry our stuff by the fire as we supped our pints of Otter and ate our sandwiches. After the lunchtime crowd had passed a steady stream of locals came in for afternoon or after work pints and chatted away with the bar staff. Nice local pub.

Had the misfortune to visit this pub with a group including 2 young children in mid September 2010. First question we were asked by the landlord was "are we the group with the dogs?". Clearly "no" was the wrong answer here as from that point we were not made to feel welcome at all. It seems there is some sort of anti family attitude here despite the menu outside the pub stating children can dine within.
After getting a round of drinks in (and being made to feel like the most demanding customer for asking for a blackcurrent juice for my 4 year old daughter) we sat round our chosen table still giving this place the benefit of the doubt (just) and trying to decide what to order. During this time 2 things happened - first off we were quite curtly told to keep our children within the area we were sat (this was a small area containing 3 or 4 tables). Secondly the landlord walked past the table, leaned across everyone saying "I've just got to check something" before grabbing a menu and slithering off to the kitchen.
At this point we decided to leave. I should add the "group with the dogs" had by now turned up and the landlord could not have done enough for them, being friendly and chatty.
If you come here with a family then be prepared to be treated like a pariah.

Just been banned (with my wife and 2 daughters at 7pm) for complaining about an awful pint, told it was best that could be done, no apologies - landlord suggested I had doctored the beer in the beer garden and asked me to leave with my family without causing any damage !!!!
In 30 years of drinlking beer never had an experience like this !!

Pleasant pub in the middle of the village, almost opposite the Valiant Soldier (a pub museum).

Lovely pint of Hobgoblin in this 2 bar pub with restaurant. Bewhiskered landlord is very attentive and chatty. Pub is clean and smart and suitable for families.
