user reviews of the Trooper Inn, Froxfield

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Trooper remains reliable for good food, expensive but on the better end of the value-price trade-off. The beer range is three decent cask ales - last visit was Bowman Swift One and Wallops Wood alongside Ringwood Best (no Doom Bar or Pride - so worth a couple of points just for that).

Service is good - and there is sufficient rotation in the menu to make each visit interesting.

Most of the comments posted before mine reflect this pub/eatery. The beer is well kept, though the range is a little limited. The food is good but as previously commented on rather pricey. I paid 17.00 for three lamb cutlets. What I really objected to was that on the menu it stated that a party of 8 or more would automatically be charged 10% service charge. WE were a party of 10 walkers. I challenged this & was told the charge would be waived. I did not leave a tip so a comment like that on the menu is very counter productive to the staff.

Now this may not be very PC but I prefer to be served by waiting staff who have a command of English.
This was my first visit to the Trooper, some things it doe,s well but it is not for me. I rate it a lowly 6.

I can only reiterate the previous comments. We had lunch here a while back and stayed overnight this bank holiday. Both the pub and the B & B are clean and comfortable and the staff friendly and attentive. Not much of a beer selection but what was available was well kept. The food is good but pricey though that didn't seem to be detering the customers. I'de come again.

Thought this was an ok pub, beer selection was nothing special Hogs back Tea and Ringwood but it has a catchy feel about it nice decor and very relaxed feel about the place, sort the beers out and you'll have a top class pub

Sorry but 8.50 for a very average sandwich does not cut the mustard. Won't be back in a hurry.

Excellent pub, which is far nicer on the inside than first impressions from the outside might suggest. 3 of us called in one evening for dinner and enjoyed excellent beer, wine and food. It just happened to be the night where you could have any choice of pie plus pudding for 10, which was excellent value as the pies are excellent! The staff were friendly and efficient, and the surroundings warm and pleasant with lots of interesting photographs, prints and paintings on the walls. Lovely evening and will definitely be paying another visit soon.

One of the best dining pubs I have ever encountered - friendly service, good food and good beer. Not exactly cheap but you get what you pay for. Compared to the average London gastropub this is in a different class, and the attention to detail is faultless. Support for local brewers and a good wine list score highly.

Well worth the trip.

The Trooper styles itself an inn, but it would be hard to imagine anything further from a traditional boozer. Although it still maintains a bar, where they'll happily serve you a pint, and a small but decent selection of beers (Ballards, Ringwoods), this is very much a dining pub and pretty much an out and out restaurant, with room for a hundred or more covers in two non-smoking bars and any number of alcoves and annexes. Not that this need be read as a bad thing; in fact, the less you think of it as a pub, the happier you're likely to be. The specials blackboard changes ever day and features a great range of genuinely tempting dishes, running from British classics delivered with imagination through modern European to a good handful of Asian-influenced dishes, backed up by a substantial a la carte menu. Shellfish features strongly. Excellent wine list is supplied by the local General Wine Company. Place is warm and welcoming, a big fire going in the main bar and the walls dense with photographs and posters, hopbines and all that clobber. Stylish in a slightly Jack Vettriano way but hey, the food enjoys an excellent reputation, it's a nice space to sit in, the staff know their onions and few visitors are going to be disappointed. It really is a place you could comfortably bring your children and your aged P's without feeling the desperate ennui that normally accompanies a 'family restaurant' concept.
