Sherborne is a lovely little town. But it's pretty awful for real ale. This place is now called Mad Dog's and is set out similar to an American diner. However it did have 2 ales, which were Spitfire & Deuchars. Live football was on the TV. Doesn't really feel like a pub. Disappointing.

Re-opened and now in my opinion the best pub in Sherborne.

New landlord has many years in the pub trade and it shows. Beer and food of great quality and good value (can recommend the steak sourced from a local butcher). Served me food at 3.30pm which was way out of normal food time.

Pub is really clean (bit OCD about this aspect of pubs) and split into two bars so quiet or lively is your choice. Free wi-fi is provided also.

Better alternative to the local established competition.

Called in here during a day long ten pub tour of Sherborne. Tried the Ringwood and it wasn't bad. The place was empty though, just my drinking mate, myself and a very bored barmaid. Me thinks it wont be long before it closes again, this time for good.

Called in for a pint while on a 'tour' of several Sherborne pubs but I'm not likely to return. Still a bland place with little or no atmosphere. The beer wasn't particularly good either. All in all, why would you come here for an ale when the Digby Tap is just across the road?

Open again, wow, and its still a brewery owned pub. Not much has changed, except they dont have the normal ales on anymore - spitfire and Bombardier have gone. There is a sign of some new paint, but not very friendly. I was the only one in the pub. Well comments - could be only early days and might improve, time will tell. Will pop in again and see whats on offer, but I think the current landlord is throwing away his money trying to upgrade this brewery owned pub, after all, how many landlords have tried over the past 8 years since Ian Blackmore sold it to Punch? Its been a white elephant for 8 years.

Well, popped in again recently and found the place all closed up - looks like the most recent landlord managed to last nearly 2 years, 20 months longer than any previous tenants since Ian sold it to Punch. Wow, its good to see how these property development companies mess up pubs, give them all back to freehold managers, then pubs may get somewhere again. A bit of a shame, as many locals said the place was always busy on Friday and Saturday nights - pitty about the O.A.P. neighbours that moaned about the noise and smokers outside.

still not very busy when I visited. not a tremendously friendly welcome and beers weren't worth particular mention. typical Punch owned place I guess.

After reading Dick Stiltons comments on the pubs in Sherborne, I decided to pay them a visit myself. Dont often go pub crawling, but it was worth a try. The Britannia has been a dive for over four years since Ian sold it to Punch. However, I found the new landlord and landlady very pleasant and interesting. The Spitfire beer was second to none. As for Dick Stiltons comment, it's the first time I have seen a guinness poored corectly (allowed to settle etc). They do know the difference between the beers and lagers. In fact, they now sell four types of real ales and the customers were all commenting on how good the beer is these days. I have not seen this pub so busy since Ian Blackmore had it four years ago. Well done to the new owners, I will be back again. Doug Smith, Sherborne

Update.... called in here recently in the hope the place had changed for the better.... it had'nt. Landlord was miserable and the girl behind the bar did'nt know the difference between bitter and Guiness. Stay away and try the Digby Tap accross the road.

Once Eldridge Pope, then Private Ownership now Punch Taverns who have ruined and killed the place. Beer is passable but no atmosphere and staff who dont give a fig if you are there or not. Avoid unless you are desperate for a swift one.
