Why do pubs having live bands seem to be obsessed by boring MOR or soft rock? I have been hearing Bryan Adams, Hendrix, Mac etc etc for 40 blooming years!

Get some punk, rockabilly or proper R&R.

paid another visit recently whilst on one of our cycle trips, Went in about midday on a Friday and they were still serving breakfasts, and the tables took on a greasy spoon like appearance. The landlord was almost as grumpy as the barmaid on our previous visit. A nice pint of red kite but no cider.

A little disappointed with my visit to this pub in all honesty. I found the bar staff rather unwelcoming and one did not even register a smile. I also don't remember her saying anything other than grunts and nods of the head. Despite this, the Greene King beer was a pleasant change to the previous pubs we had visited during the day, also plenty of effort had gone into the halloween decorations and it was a rather impressive display

Recently the guest beer has been St.Austell 'Proper Job', a daft name for a truly excellent 5.5 beer. Definitely the best beer they do. Liz now gets a couple of newspapers in too. There have been good reports about their Sunday Roast as well. It's good to see the pub slowly getting better and better.

Have been visiting during the weeks for an early evening drink and found it to be a great local. This weekend had Sunday roast and it was perfect. Well cooked and presented and plenty of it. Guest ales are well kept.

Loud live bands on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday lunchtime. Far, far too noisy for us so we tend to sit out on the spacious decking. This pub has seen a massive turn round in the last few years when precious few customers visited. Spence has introduced the bands and the Wednesday night card schools seems to be popular. A few weeks ago, new pizza ovens were installed and their pizzas, paninis and ciabattas were fine. Greene King beers are not my favourite - the IPA in particular is wishy-washy - but they sold a humdinger of a winter ale last winter. Liz is the bubbly (and busty) manager who copes with the sometimes boisterous customers with wit, and she's brought some nice touches to the place. She often acts as a waitress too when she has time. Massive car park with resident burger van (for the time being). For a time there was an outide temporary bandstand for the groups but this area has now reverted to a childrens play area. Shame about that as sitting outside and listening to the music was preferable to being inside.

Currently not doing food. But there are still live bands and four cask ales - 3 Greene King and a guest (Everards Tiger on our visit).

There's nothing especially wrong with the place - it's clean enough, but it's a bit faded and damp smelling. And it lacks character and charm.

Great pub for music,Fri,Sat,Sun and Monday.
Good food during the week,a Sunday roast to die for.
Welcoming clientel and great atmosphere.
The Lower Bell has become a musical and food venue. It has becomes the place bands wish to play, the landlord obviously loves music, good food and single malt.Give it a try, I am sure you will agree!

Typical run of the mill Greene King pub. Lack of character and atmosphere. Four cask ales - IPA, Abbot, Ale Fresco and Ruddles County. The Ruddles was served in very good condition.
