user reviews of the Pack Saddle, Chazey Heath

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We were at a birthday party at the Saddle last night. It was wonderful, buffet and Bar-B-Que. Homemade Burgers to die for, straight from the B-B-Q. The staff were excellent, the weather magnificent, all in all a great evening. We hadn't been in the Saddle for about 4 years and it has definitely changed for the better. We will be back soon.

Yes roger, I share your viws on this fine pub - and also on Mr Angry (Psi) who, obviously has an axe to grind. But, with all the haha's, its difficult to know - a personal BITE message got a rude/unprintable reply; this bloke may be deranged.

It looks as if you have to be brave to post on here at risk of being attacked by Mr Angry (psi). So, briefly, looked in to the Pack Saddle on Friday, lovely pub, nice crowd, very welcoming. I cannot see why Mr Angry hates the place so much.

HA HA HA HA HAH AH AHHA HAH HAH AH HAH AH HA HAH HA HA HA

Doughh-boy has visited 113 cities but only ever done one review. HAA HA AH AH AHA AHAHA HHAHA HH HAHA AHAHAAHA, this is too easy.

Pack Saddle at Chazey Heath ... rumbled ... you know it.

I shall never darken your fake reviews again.

Ha ha ha ha nice try, MikeDDD. So, you have the best beer in the world where you come from in Durham but you've never ever posted a review about any pub in Durham or, indeed, about any pub other than this one.

Perhaps it's because no other pub has ever asked you to review it, as you say this one does. Well, I'll ask ... go on, please tell us about the pubs back home.
Psi - 8 Sep 2011 10:40
I haven't been in this pub for some time now so will make no comment at this stage only to say that it is well out of Reading (yes it has an RG postcode but you will need a car or an X39/40 bus to get there) Wadworth's beer and apparently a recent makeover. I will give a try and report back.

I do not intend to get in an argument here and will not, but psi's note sounds a little like a grudge. If he cared to visit he would find something along the lines of " If you are not pleased with anything please let us know, if you like the pack saddle, then please Google us and leave a recommendation on the web" on the bottom of the bill. This may account for the reviews.

agree psi,why oh why do they do it,a big zero

Gosh, what a lot of positive comments this year from people who've only ever posted one pub review. Oh no, wait, a couple of them have posted other reviews. Who'd have thunk it, those other reviews were posted around the same time and are all scathing. Goodness me, and those scathing ones are about the local competition to the Pack Saddle.

What do I think of this pub? I've never been there. Was thinking of going but not likely to now since someone obviously feels it's necessary to post a lot of fake reviews! Especially like the one that says, "Will book next time to guarantee a table". Must remember to book.

Apparently, the landlord has a sense of humour and likes to tell a few jokes. David Brent must have found a new job.

We had dinner here on Saterday, everything perfect. Scallops and a rack of ribs, it was all excellent. Good service by smart girls, landlord checked to see if everything was OK (pretended he didn't care, great sense of humour). Good beer, food and drinks very well priced. Could see why the place was packed. We will be regular customers.

We had a super time at DS's birthday party, Bar B Q meal, lots of sunshine, great company, followed by a buffet in the evening. Kiddies play area took the pressure off the mums. Absolutely great day, great staff, funny guy behind the bar with an answer for everthing and finished up with a live Irish Music night.
You have to visit this place.

We attended The Jaguar Club night at the Pack Saddle last Monday and had a fantastic Bar B Que evening, the weather could have been better but the location, food and staff were great, thanks to all. A good time had by all, would definitely recommend.

Down from Durham for the weekend (where we have the best beer in the world) but this 6x is a close second. Well kept beer, very good. Very friendly pub. Had a great evening.

Visited the Packsaddle last night, very very busy but they found a space for us for which we were very greatfull. Local ales were excellent and the food was better. Good prices and a good menu.
Will book next time to guarantee a table. Great pub.

Called in here after paint balling at mapledurham, great chat over the bar. We didn't eat here but the food coming out of the kitchen looked great. Met Sprocket the most laid back Doberman ever. Unfortunately we don't come this way often but if we do, will definitely be back to eat (and to hear more jokes). Thanks, great afternoon.

Have used this pub on and off for over three years - after a somewhat chequered history the new landlords have put a huge amount of effort in to clean it up and run a pleasant, resonably priced pub with a family friendly approach without turning it into a creche - recommended

Hadn't been here for a while, what a diference. New management, new decor and very welcoming staff. Had a great Sunday Lunch sat outside in the garden, the kids were on the play area so very relaxed. Will definitely be back soon.

Great place on a warm summer's evening but you have to sit inside with a lot of surly locals the rest of the year. Very dear for what it is. Probably, on balance, one to avoid.

Under New Management.

Haven't been yet but if Trish and Paul's (previously of the Bottle and Glass, Binfield Heath and The New Inn, Kidmore End) normal forumla is anything to go by it will be great. Especially as I will be able to enjoy Paul's food and not ruin it by having to drink Brakspears of which I am not a fan.

I know it's been redecorrated and cleaned up so can't wait to try it, I'll post back when I have.

Over priced and so far up its own a**e that no one can possibly enjoy a visit there. Avoid.

Visited this pub a couple of days after christmas. Entered at around 12.30 and it was empty. Deliberately made a noise so that someone could be aware of our existence then went to a table. No menus! Heard someone at the bar so went up and asked for a menu. After a lot of huffing and puffing we were handed a menu. We were not greeted, not asked if we would like a drink - nothing. We slammed the menu on the bar and walked out. Never again!!!!!

Well, I am quite amazed at this pub, I last ate there and the food was 40 minutes in the coming! I was amazed as there were only 8 people in the restaurant area, so what the heck was going on I do not know, when I politely questioned the waitress, a smiling dark skin lady , she remarked 'I don't know, I will find out' this was said in a foreign accent. The food arrived, delivered by this lovely smiling and very pleasant waitress, she was apologetic that it was so long in arriving, it was dreadful in its presentation and also cold. You can imagine my frustration, I asked to speak to the Manager, he or she never arrived, I got up and left in disgust, I never even bothered to ask for a refund. I can honestly say, I will never go back there again, the only good experience which I had was to have seen the very lovely smiling waitress who was doing her best to serve the frustrated other customers who were obviously experiencing the same situation as I was.

A solid pub with very well kept Wadsworths ale and usually a nice guest beer too. For cider drinkers, they have the wonderful draft Stowford Press from Westons, which is a rareity this far East of Herefordshire. There's a very comprehensive playground for children, so the garden can be over-run with ankle biters in the afternoons, but these disappear in the evenings leaving a good old country pub feel about the place. But I do have to agree with the most recent review that the bar staff can tend towards the surly sometimes. It would really cheer me up if they'd change the name though, it always strikes me that the name is a rotten attempt to steal business from the Pack Horse, which is half a mile further up the Woodcote Road as you head out of Reading. They should have the courage to be judged on their own, instead of trying to trap people who are heading for their more famous neighbour.

Went here last night; nice pub but the barmaid was probably the most miserable I have seen. I would have thought they might have been happy to have been so busy on a Wednesday night. A large cycling group arrived and were very thirsty and happy to have got to the pub.

This pub has recently changed landlords. It had previously just"run into the ground" but now has a new landlord who has an interest in his beer and how its kept and his customers taste buds! The food on our visit was wholesome, presented nicely and the usual price for the area. The pub it self is very old certainly 400+ years and although there have been additions over time they are reasonable and the pub still has a pleasant "pubby" feel to it. It really does deserve to prosper and not turn into another "gastricpub"!!!

The food in this pub can be very good or very bad. Seems to be no reason for this. Had wonderful stroganof meal one month - next month had a steak meal and saute potatoes and it was dreadful. I am not sure whether the head chef if awfully knowledgeable as he thinks saute potatoes are made the same as chips! Had bread and butter pudding - once it was fantastic - next time it was dry and barely warm. Their lunchtime menu is very good but only if the chef is having a 'good day'. Shame, because if the standard was kept up it would be great.
