Old pub with decent ales on. Can get a bit crowded and larger bar is more food orientated.

Excellent and ever changing beer selection, all I've had been very well kept. Food is very good too. The staff are excellent. Best pub in Wivenhoe.

Really enjoyed this pub. The community has got together to take ownership and they've done a great job with the renovation, and it retains bags of character. Think I saw a load of board games available to play. They've added a small garden area at the back, it's not huge - but nicely done. Good range of ales when I was there, some dark, some light, some strong, some weak which is great as often pubs have a load of beers that are basically the same. The pint I had was in great nick and the food was excellent too. Recommended.

In here early last Saturday evening and very busy but service was good.
I had a nice pint of Adnams Southwold Bitter that cost £3.30.

Pub was re-opened in November 2013 by a group of locals. Food is good and beer is kept well. Adnams and Colchester the most frequent but sometimes Mighty Oak and Crouch Vale appear alongside too.

Currently closed - it will (possibly) reopen soon under private ownership.

Pub cum restaurant in Wivenhoe. It still shows outside as a Pubmaster pub but I guess it is Punch owned now. Three hand pumps; G/K IPA, Old Speckled Hen & Adnams Bitter. 2.60 for the Adnams Bitter which was pretty good although varying heights of head on the beer. Not the best tasting beer of our Wivenhoe crawl last night. A naval theme with ship steering wheels and an oar on the wall. Like the previous reviewer I also noticed the wallpaper on the wall and ceiling by the toilet kept up now by coloured map pins now. At least some of the tables are still available for drinkers who are not dining.

went a week or so ago after visting my son at essex university , the menu although not overly big obviously deals in quality not quantity as both me and my husband enjoyed starters and main courses which were very tasty and well pressented ,the wine list was how ever very dissapointing and the beer very tepid ,although full (reading other comments) all in all a very good experience and not to expencesive ,although the food holds up it does how ever over power the very tired decor held togethr in some place by very attractive gaffer tape ,one would say an overhale might be needed 8/10

Went a few weeks ago for a meal, very nice if slightly overpriced, and quite a limited menu, didn't bother with dessert as these were very overpriced at nearly 5 a go, no thanks! Didn't notice if the short pint phenomenon was still in practice. However, what I eventually chose from the non-diet friendly menu was very, very nice with very fresh vegetables so top marks there. Not top marks for shouty students but oops it is in Wivenhoe.

The food here is outstanding, I havent been there for a couple of years mind you, but used to take the parents there when I was at uni. good choice for veggies too. Always found the staff really nice and helpful. Hated driving round the bendy lanes and getting into the carpark though!

Dear Mr Lehovel, Staff not paying attention? Get off the high horse and be a bit more tolerant. Just remember its brim glass measures for a pint of beer, or have not you been paying attention? Lets think about the physics of serving up a full measure in such a glass and getting it on the bar to the customer without spilling it? Have you ever served in a bar? Within acceptable tolerances, sheer logic tells us that, you are going to be extremely lucky to get a full 20fl ozs of imperial measure in the standard issue brim measure beer glass used in the UK. My suggestion is take a sup and hand it back for a top up with a smile, it helps :)) , and you might be surprised at what you get! If your still not happy suggest you ask the landlord to consider purchasing some of the over sized line measure glasses.

I haven't been in this pub for some time but will be visiting soon as my wife was in the other night with her friends and reported back on the good quality food.
There are a number of reviews about not receiving a full pint and one comment saying that if you ask the glass is topped up with good grace. Good grace?!A short measure should not be served in the first place! Can't get the staff these days, obviously don't pay attention to what they are doing.

The food is generally good, but the beer is varible, and you do have to complain to get a full pint.

In respect of the last posting by the brave "anonymous", one word sums up your comments. That word is rubbish. I have been going to this pub for over 8 years. The current landlord, landlady and staff have never refused a top up and when requested it is always given with good grace. The ales are not poorly kept and for the area are not over priced. I eat here on a regular basis and the food is fresh, correctly cooked and well presented. If you think the food is mediocre I suggest that you get in the kitchen yourself and show us how its done! If things were so bad why didn't you complain? Man, or mouse?

Poorly kept over priced ales. Trying to get a full pint
is hard work. Food mediocre at best
