user reviews of The Hare and Hounds, Rowledge

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Having walked from Bentley station the Ramble Then Lunch team descended upon the Hare and Hounds in sleepy Rowledge last Friday lunchtime. The Hare and Hounds itself was pretty sleepy - we were the only folk there when we arrived and only a few more turned up during the next hour or so.

The beer was fine so we decided to eat here. Menu was small but that can be a good thing. I had fish and chips but the fish was an oblong battered one which seemed straight out of a catering pack. Alongside the fish and chips was an onion and lettuce salad, a slightly odd addition which must make this the slimmer's option.

No sign of the great range of fresh fish mentioned in the facilities/features section above. I suspect this must have been a previous landlord.

This pub is pleasant enough but with nothing to make you leap about and plan another visit.

We went here for a pub lunch recently. The decor is pleasing, the pub warm and cozy. Others in my party had the Beer battered fish and chips, which were OK. I had the Sausage Baguette, and was extremely disappointed. For 5.95 I received a Baguette cut in 2, and each peice had a sausage also cut in 2.. and nothing else.. no accompanying salad.. no dressing.. no onion.. not even any butter.. and for this we waited over 45 minutes.. what an insult. Best avoided.

This is the very essence of a village pub. The food is equal to that of a top restaurant and the Greene King beer is kept in excellent condition. It has a happy balance of locals and diners. The toilets are clean, the garden is attractive. Highly recommended for ambience, unpretentiousness, value and choice.

havnt been for a month or two but now i have been told about this website i wanted to post a comment. The fish dishes that my party and myself had were below par, seemed as if they were old and on the turn. we also found the ageing barman to be slow and a bit grumpy, you could also hear alot of shouting and what seemed like fighting coming from the kitchen area. all in all i dont think i will be going back. (the beer was ok though)

My wife and I have been a few times and enjoyed excellent food and drink. The Monday evening fish 'n' chips is excellent for quality and value. And one of your reporters, good at damning with faint praise, should know that the "elderley (sic) generation" can not only find good value, they can also spell!

very nice pub and food is excellent but not very well supported by the beer drinkers of Rowledge!

Pleasant evening and not a bad pub though the fish was more Iceland than Bilingsgate. Nice surroundings and ambiance. Dogs & children welcome and they certainly run do amok which is not a bad thing these days. Garden still worth a visit despite housing development since Large Beer Garden Greene King in Bloom Winners 2006 -2nd Place in Farnham Pub Garden Competition. Let's hope it wins the small garden award next year as it's still kept up to standard. Not one for youngsters or drinkers but the restaurant is more then welcoming for the elderley generation - nothing too chalenging. Once again a pleasant evening and thank you to our host Bryan.

Late licence (12pm midweek & 1pm weekends if trade demands) Don't be surprised to find the pub shut every afternoon including weekends, Sunday afternoon & evening and way before 11 weekdays. 'if trade demands' says it all.

Whatever you do don't mention the beer is flat. Brian the landlord's son and not the boyfriend of Emma White who recommends the pub but boyfriend of the other Emma White refused to even look at the offending pint but declared it not flat "if you want bubbles I can give you bubbles" by "banging the glass on the bar".

Sorry, thats me keeping my very long surname shorter when I did my user name!

I am no relation of the chef or anyone who works at the pub and am quite offended that you criticise my honest opinion of this good pub!

To set the record straight I'm Emma Whittaker-Axon
Hope that clears the air and lets other viewers know i am genuine!

I would just like to make the point that I'm no relative or friend of anyone at this pub - I'm am just a mere customer!
I heard about the Hare & Hounds after PG from Eagle Radio visited the pub for his Love Bus tour.

I've lived in Farnham for 23 years and have to admit I'd never been to H & Hounds before, for no particular reason. But since going a few months ago both me & my mum loved the food and it's now one of our 'regulars' when we do venture out for a meal out!

Just like to say that I went to the Hare & Hounds for the first time last night after hearing rave reviews of the food!
The staff were very welcoming & friendly and the food was delicious with generous servings!

We were both amazed by the menu - with probably about 12 fish dishes on the specials board. Also there was a wide choice for vegetarians (which is usually lacking in most pubs!)

Would recommend eating here to anyone and we'll definite be visiting again soon!

I had my first meal here the other day and it was amazing! The food, the atmosphere and the service was second to none. I am not a local in Rowledge, however I will be making the journey to the Hare and Hound often and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great food, friendly environment and lovely location.

WE now visit the pub every wednesday after tennis. A lovely place for a drink when the missus still thinks you are excercising

My family and I visit this pub often, and are always treated to a friendly and warm atmosphere. The food is always fresh and delicious and well priced. Our son especially likes the amount of fresh fish on offer! The garden is always well maintained and the kids love playing with the landlords dog Dennis! What a cheeky scamp!! I would rate this pub 10 out of 10 but the landlord is an Arsenal fan, so he loses 1 point for this!

A very Nice little Pub not far from our Ash Base. The Beer was Good no problem there and the Food was Excellent. A little more expensive than some but worth it if you want a better standard than average pubs. We've been back already and again the Food was the same high standard. The service was a little slower than the first visit but then the second occasion was a Prime evening and it was Packed out! The Landlords Daughter (i assumed it was his daughter as she has his eyes, I might be wrong)was taking orders and serving and is quite a stunning young lady!

Had a pint of Lime & Soda also and was charged 80p.......

What a shame that this pub is so far away from my house! If only it were nearer we would be in there most nights...
anonymous - 10 Nov 2006 19:29
Visited on Saturday lunchtime. Great food and service. Well kept beer. The only annoyance was the 3.60 they charged for a pint and half of lime and soda!!

Went there a couple of weeks ago. Service was a bit slow at first but then got better(but it was very busy). Very good starters of sizzling prawns in garlic and crab linguine. Little disappointed with the liver main course as it was a bit dry - probably more my fault as I though it was calves liver which is a bit juicier. Overall a good evening out and have booked to go again.

Fantastic gastro pub - just couldn't believe it was so quiet on a saturday night...

Looks a bit stuffy and landlord a grumpy git, but this just add to its charm.

Well worth a visit and it really surprised us, wil go again and again and again ...

Excellent! Was made to feel really welcome by the staff.
All I can say about the food was that it was the best i've had in years! and very realistically priced.
Nice to see that some chefs still take pride in what is on the menu. Will definatly be returning with the family.

Great, fresh quality food at a good price. Little gem awaiting to be discovered. Recently taken over by new tenants, very friendly atmosphere and child safe.
