Great harbour side pub.
Well kept Sammy Smith's Taddy Beers.
Excellent.

Only had time for a quick half of Sam Smith's Bitter but would certainly go back again when I could spend some more drinking time in what seems to be a pretty good harbourside bar.

Go to this pub when in Scarborough. Since the new tenants took over coming up to a year ago, they have turned this pub around, and as of yesterday it has been voted the best there! By mystery people from Scarbrough civic society who give the awards out so well done to them!
Best pub need I say more, go and visit, right on the harbourside. Not suitable for wheelchairs

Nine of us, spent an hour here yesterday, beer was on top form and the service from the landlady was impeccable. Great view from the bar across the harbour.Would highly recommend.

Visited this pub recently whilst working in Scarborough, dont see what the last commenter was on about... the pub was warm and friendly and the land lord and landlady (very nice) were extremeley friendly, the pub was clean so were the toilets!
The main reason for going in was a quiet drink whilst away from home, got that and made some good friends too

Highly recommend this pub if your in the Scarborough area

Unfortunatly this pub has now lost its great landlord and has began to slide downhill. nobody seems to be bothered to do much. or even open on time! Went in today and it didnt open till 1-30. Toilets not too good and looked as if carpets had not seen a vac for a few days. Whats happening at Sam Smiths pubs?
noggin46 - 6 Mar 2011 20:22
A popular well run pub. Is always clean and the beer is very good. A Samuel Smiths pub with great views of the harbour. Not disabled friendly because of all the stairs, but well worth a visit.
One of the best landlords you could wish for, he and his wife are always serving during the day. Very busy in the summer.
Toilets are always very clean. Also the cheapest pub in Scarbourgh!
Meals are available all day.

I went in on a quiet afternoon in early January 2010 and enjoyed a couple of pints. Alpine Lager was cheap but as with all Sam Smiths pubs they make up for it with 'normal' priced bottles (Nut Brown Ale). Friendly locals and the nice barman didn't mind me asking him about the England cricket score, which he was occasionally checking on a laptop behind the bar. I suspect it gets horribly busy in high season.

Agree with the other reviews - good seafront location but doesn't crank up the prices as a result - in fact the prices were the lowest I've seen in years. If Sam Smiths can do it, why can't the others?
daveinbrum - 2 Apr 2010 13:37
Sam Smiths pub.

Best pub on the seafront by a mile, although that's not saying much as the others are shocking.

Usual cheap beer prices for Sam Smith's pub.

I'd avoid the nasty microwaved food though.

Good views of the sea/harbour from the seats by the window.

Lovely pub, easily the best on the seafront by far. We always visit it when in the town. Great drinks, great prices, very welcoming. Highly recommended

Popped in 1/9. Two handpumps, both off.

Samuel Smiths - and MILD, what more can i say - well, here goes:

Samuel Smiths - quality. So good, and due to the dearth of decent drinking places around, we tried a half of their other drinks - i even had LAGER (the filtered stuff, not the Alpine), I had had the stout before, which is also nice, but was amazed to find i enjoyed the others too.

Cost - dirt cheap and tasty - how come the other breweries charge much more, often for tat - (cough, John Smiths)?

Comedy value - a few top class merries/drunks, which were hilarious, but never were they in danger of being a problem - they were all good natured. Quirky yes, but good spirited

View - sunny day, great view over the harbour, very pleasant.

Best pub in Scarborough for those that like a proper pint

Good pub, decent pint if you like Sams (I do). Nice nautical theme to the pub with brill views across the harbour.
Two yachty types were in discussing how one of his mates could row to Whitby faster than his motorised boat, and then a pig flew by the window.
Takes all sorts I suppose.
muzzyofrotherham - 19 Apr 2009 20:48
Friendly pub with harbour views and. of course, being a Sam Smith's it's dirt cheap with decent beer (if you like Old Brewery, and I do). I imagine this is a great place to be on a stormy night with the fire roaring in the grate.
Albert_Campion - 27 Mar 2009 15:15
Charming Sam Smith's pub with superb views over the seafront and harbour.

As you'd expect, the usual supply of SS produce, (including their cold and nasty real ale OBB) but given the stupidly low prices, it becomes a rather more palatable proposition!

The interior is all wood panelling and comfy seating, as well as having a real fire on the go during the colder months - if you bag a seat next to it I can guarantee you won't be leaving there in a hurry.

As noted elsewhere, it's pretty small for the location, so it probably isn't worth visiting on the weekend during summer but out of season it comes into its own.

By far the best bet on the sea front. If you are lucky enough to get a window seat a great place to sit and look over the harbour and watch the world go by whilst enjoying a pint of Sam's cask bitter which is about a pound cheaper then anyone else's.The only downer is that it is very small and if you have to go into the back room it is a bit depressing.Still well worth a visit though.

We decided on the spur of the moment to have a day trip to Scarborough, so I didnt have chance to check out any BITE reviews of the pubs there before we set out. So after walking in, and promptly walking out of several pubs on the seafront that were only serving nitro keg gnats piss, we next hit the Golden Ball. After that, there was no need to try any more

OK, it has a quirky layout with several quite small bars on different levels, and yes, it only serves Sam Smiths beers. But I like Old Brewery Bitter, and I like it even more when it is only 1.41 a pint (which is 2p cheaper than my Sam Smiths local in Derby). The Harbour Bar, with its sea views was full, but there was room up a few stairs in the Mariners Bar which is very comfortably furnished with leather armchairs and settees.

I cant comment about the food as we had sat on the promenade and eaten absolutely superb fish and chips from Winking Willys (I think thats what its called) Chip Shop nearby before visiting the Golden Ball.

But at the end of the day, it leaves two questions The first is why cant all fish and chip shops serve fish and chips like Winking Willys but the second, which is more relevant to this website, is why cant other brewers sell quality beers at Sam Smiths prices ???

A tad above average if you like Sam Smiths (I do) 1.41 a pint on the main front staggering value.
brianthelion - 28 Jul 2008 13:19
Recently visited - really good pint of pure brew for the lager fanatics - very nice !!!.

prices still very cheap & good atmosphere, it's only a small place which can get busy - arrive early !!
booza - 26 Mar 2008 10:21
Best Pub on sea front with good cheap berr as mentioned in last review and a selection of good value food. well worth a look if in the area, but there are Pubs with a better selection of Beers
ahscum - 18 Jul 2007 18:46
this is a very attractive little harbour-side pub consisting of a couple of bars and other rooms, done out in a rather appropriate maritime theme.
nice view over the harbour and boats from the front bar.
all this and sam smiths cask at around 1.36 a pint.
who could ask for more?

the rooms are small, so probably gets busy during holiday season.

reynard - 19 Jun 2007 17:39
Decent Samuel Smiths pub with their Old Brewery Bitter on cask ("drawn from an oak cask"), and several other beers from the S.S. range on keg or bottle. As the neigbouring pubs only have boring macro keg beers, The Golden Ball would be your best bet.

Just returned from Scarborough visited this pub frequently, good atmosphere, very cheap drinks compared to other pubs in the town and reasonably priced food. We found the staff to be friendly. well worth a visit.

Sam smiths pub ( Cheap !! ), very nicew view over harbour especially if you can get a window seat !!.
Does get very busy in summer as only a small pub. Prob 'nicest / classy'st ' pub on seafront
booza - 14 Dec 2006 11:21
Was a bit dirty when i went last summer, not been back for that reason.
littlewilliebrompton - 14 Jul 2006 00:19
cheap beer and a brill quiz night on a thursday night worth a visit

sylvpaul - 20 Jun 2006 23:51
Wood panelled traditional Sam Smiths pub over-looking the harbour. Calm, relaxed, dignified atmosphere of gentle murmering conversation and the savoury tang of tobacco. The front room can get a bit squashed, but also has a comfortable back room. Excellent value food and beer.
SilkTork - 9 Oct 2005 18:29
Sam Smiths pub with a great view of the harbour-cheap food-well reasonable-but on the downside has a bar at ground level but the day I visited it was closed which meant climbing a short flight of stairs WITHOUT ANY HANDRAILS,to get to the toilets meant coming down stairs then back up the other side-in other words-no bloody use if your disabled, but the beer was good-quite a few good pubs and if your hungry chippies and cafes in this area.
When I say no handrails their was some sort of rail their but it was very narrow.
