user reviews of the Dolphin, Eastbourne

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Dolphin was the last of a trio of pubs we visited on South Street yesterday lunchtime. Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter is the regular ale. Guests were Brakspear Oxford Gold, Long Man Marzen & Long Man Best Bitter. Comfortable enough place. But, not the best pub on the street. Our last stop before heading to the station was a new bottle shop just around the corner from here and where you could drink inside. I'll request that to be added to BITE.

A small front lounge with a much larger rear lounge which was in use for a function when I was there. Seating was average and the food rather expensive. There was only 2 real ales available.

Sadly didn't have much time here (steam train to catch) and it deserved longer. A couple of guest ales on including the brilliant Longman brewery American Pale Ale. Very pleasant staff. Nice atmosphere.

Friendly welcome and relaxed atmosphere. Four real ales available. The Harvey's Sussex Best was excellent. Well worth a look.

Nice pub with a good choice of ales and very good food.

As previously stated, this pub is on the expensive side for Eastbourne, but is very nicely laid out and the staff are exceptionally friendly. Dark Star Hophead in good nick, with Harveys Sussex Best and one other (can't remember - not that exciting) also on offer.

After my disappointment in the Dewdrop (no real ale that day - see my post for that establishment) I tried this pub. It had 3 ales on (Harvey's, Brakspear's and Hopback Hophead, which was excellent). Not a cheap pub, but a friendly one, and I was impressed. I will revisit.

This is a nice local pub with a few ales to chose from. The food is consistently good, as is the service and the atmosphere is relaxed. Unfortunately however, the drinks are priced way to high for the likes of me so I often go elsewhere.

Second visit. Brakspears in very good condition. Absolutely cracking meal. I am from London and do not find it expensive here especially after visiting The Marine. Quality, friendly and charming service and very good produce make this a must in Eastbourne.

Upmarket pub with upmarket prices. Pleasant enough staff but somewhat snobby clientele. Good to see a bar without television blaring out so that's a plus. However not sure who its aimed at, a bit too expensive for me though.

Upmarket 'Little Chelsea' bar with slightly stuffy atmosphere and a price list that would make Londoners choke.

Decent pub. Tried three different ales. One was clearly not settled out. That said it was changed and the other two were very well kept and this is a busy little place. Highly recommend the food which is home cooked. The roast pork belly must be a signature dish as it is dificult to get as good as this! Atogether well worth the visit. Didn't notice the price particulary as I was enjoying the beer and food!

Upmarket but friendly. Good selection of ales but on the pricey side. Attracts the posher people of 'Little Chelsea' area.

A favourite of mine when in Eastbourne. Harvey's Best and other guest ales, and a restaurant type space at the back. Food is excellent.

However, there is one barmaid who obviously hates working with the public, totally miserable and you can wait ages to get served whilst she blindly ingonres you. Most annoying.

Another nice pub. Timmy Taylors was in good nick. Very friendly staff, especially the manager who we spoke to at length about some of the nice pictures on the walls. No large screen TV and seemed a pub for the more discerning customer. Never ate here but the menu looked good and apparently the food is home cooked. Altogether a nice place for a quite drink and perhaps a meal.

That post about the cloudy beer is absolutely untrue. I'm the assistant manager at the Dolphin and firstly, I would have been there all day on the day of the visit. Secondly, the manager lives upstairs, so I'm sure he would have been around if I wasn't. In the year I have been at the Dolphin I have never had a complaint about the Harveys, if anything I repeatedly get told that we keep the best pint in Eastbourne. The only problem we have ever had with the Harveys, was a batch without the finings which appeared cloudy and needed to be sent back to the brewery, but that was about 6 months ago. Just wanted to clear that up because we pride ourselves on our beer and I don't want to be reading things like that!

Had a pint of Harveys here on Saturday which was as cloudy as hell. Apparently, nothing could be done about it until the manager got back. Obviously, not the fault the of the barstaff but when asked when the manager would be back the response was "tomorrow"

Smart uncluttered pub with three ales including a decent pint of Harvey's Best

Lovely relaxed atmosphere during the week but can get busy and noisy on Fri/sat nights, but then doesn't everywhere? Friendly staff, log fire, beautifully kept beer and great food. And doggy friendly to boot - a terrific place.

Ended up in the Dolphin on a recent non-league footie away day and wasn't disappointed in the slightest. A couple of the ales were off on the day but Doom Bar and Harveys went down a treat. Good, relaxed atmosphere in the early afternoon: Pleasent bar staff, superb burgers - can't fault the place. Will certainly go back in the future.

Decent place. always had a friendly service. a mix of traditional and modern.

Ive not much to add to the previous comments except that there is a piano. There is also some seating outside for us smokers and I think that there is a balcony, but could be wrong as I never investigated.

I didnt find it to be the most exciting of pubs, but the beer was good.
Strongers - 12 Aug 2008 11:23
Nice local, bigger than it may look at first with a restaurant area at the back. Good mix of punters, and yes - there was a dog, but given the size of place it's hardly a health hazard with one or two canine customers in the bar area. Recommended if you are in the area.

First in as pub was opening ystdy at 12:00, off came the towels and relieved to see the beer pulled thru before we were served 3 very good pints of Harveys (2.55), TT Landlord was also available. I liked the look of the bar although it is probably 'newer' than it seems at first glance. Food menu (& prices) a little pretentious, but good start to the Eastbourne crawl.

Nice pub, with Tim Taylors Landlord on draft.

Excellent Sunday roast, too!
harbourdrinker - 11 Jul 2007 14:28
Totally agree with previous comment, the place is much cleaner, HOWEVER it's ruined by allowing the bar to be taken over by smelly dogs. Not all of us want dogs around us when we eat or drink. Get rid of the dogs & you have a good pub. Certainly wouldn't eat here for the above reason.

Oh the karaoke in this place was/probably still is the best ever. Never have I seen such a bunch of loons let loose on the public at large, and every poor sod walking down South Street, as it was so loud! Rib achingly funny. Used to get charmingly full on the weekends without being rammed, and it does the girly lightweight drink that is Bols Blue Curacao. Wicked. Karaoke, hilarity and a blue tongue. What more could anyone wish for?!
