Was there Thursday 1.10.15. Fairly quiet, but having been to the Apple Tree and Barley Mow before, I was beginning to wind down mentally, followed by a 40 minute sleep on the train back to Cardiff!

Wonderful pub and human menagerie!
Never had anything but a wonderful time; outrageously good value and well kept beer and cider; gorgeously friendly bar staff and locals...
One of my top 5's ever!!!!

The sign says no shoplifters! There several gay men who are regulars here, but it's not a gay bar. The customers can be rough and aggressive, but it's a rough area. Despite the sign, things are often stolen to order. Once a guy turned up carrying a bed/sofa, freshly stolen from a furniture shop! Lots of the characters from a few years ago have gone, but that's life.

This pub is frequented by racist, sexist and homophobic men who intimidate people as they walk past. The sign on the door says 'no shirtlifters'. This is not a friendly pub.

Ian.S - it was not meant as a slur, it was my understanding that it was a gay bar.

If it is not then I happily retract my comment.

kevmac with all respect the Long Bar is not a gay bar... and besides there are a number of ladies who attend. The majority male status of the bar is just down to the type of pub and atmosphere that the pub has.

Blackthorn, I think you will find the punters are mostly male as it is a gay bar.

A long and narrow pub just off the Old Market roundabout, this seems a popular spot and attracted a wide variety of punters of all ages on a recent visit, although they all seemed to be male apart from the friendly barmaid its not often you get a glass changed because its too warm. Colour scheme is unusual with all the woodwork being brown (even the sensor for the alarm next to the door hadnt escaped) and there was even brown wooden boards on the ceiling. Much of the walls were exposed stone and had been painted yellow. Black beams interspersed the stonework.

The bar counter is half way up on the right, and to the left are a number of wooden partitions. At the rear there is a high, vaulted ceiling again all yellow and black which is an unusual, but not unattractive, feature, although the music was a little loud back here to have an easy conversation. Toilets were surprisingly plush with new dark grey tiles and recessed blue down-lighters. There was a plasma at the front showing the football which was somewhat annoyingly located right next to one of the tables. There was also another one at the rear. The only food offering appeared to be a solitary Ginsters pie sat in a warming rack.

Ciders are clearly the main focus here and there was Blackthorn, Thatchers Traditional, Cheddar Valley and Natch to choose from. The latter was offered draught or canned! The solitary beer was Courage Best.

Great selection of cider with a knowledgeable landlord. Probably too frightened to go there at night but would return for a mid afternoon jug.
Lots of memorabilia on the walls makes up for the lack of conversation.

Very cheap but I wouldn't go there for a night out!

Fantastic character from the peculiar regulars to the medieval interior. I've never had a cheaper round anywhere in the South. Although I remember drinking this strange bright orange stuff - research suggests it was Cheddar Valley cider.

Great Thatcher's and Cheddar Valley cider and unique atmosphere. Friendly and unusual locals. Fewer shoplifters now - though I was once offered a sofa bed, which was carried into the bar! Worth a visit.

Clearly, neither punters nor staff bother to read the giant 'No Shoplifters' sign on the entrance! Handpumps removed. Mixed crowd, but friendly, efficient service.

It looks tiny from outside but goes a long way back - some interesting old wooden beams at the rear if you like that sort of stuff. Good real cider, good prices, refuge from the gentrification and associated inflated prices spreading round Bristol. The shoplifters trying to sell stolen goods are a bit of a nuisance.

And I thought it was just me!In half an hour i was offered coffee, pork chops from farm foods carriers, shampoo and vodka!! But again 1.55 a pint saves it, 6/10

Was here not so long ago and within 5 minutes was offered cut price porn dvds, cheese, coffee and a duvet. My friend was advised to remove his tie by a kind regular in case he was mistaken for a copper.......... Cheap beer though.

Haven't been for a while.

If it still has the nailed down furniture, rotgut cider and unpredictable denizens, then that would explain the 4.5/10, mind.
