user reviews of the Coney, West Wickham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

More of a place to eat then a pub, but still nice to go for a pint, its a very relaxed atmosphere. I've never had trouble waiting to be served. I have eaten here before and the food and service was fine.

I am sure the owners(like M & B at the George) are really pleased with their policy of ACTIVELY discouraging relaxed drinkers, having now seen what a pigs ear the New Inn have made of combining a friendly drinking atmosphere whilst also having groups of friends and families being able to have a nice meal in pleasant surroundings .

The food here is always good but this is the sixth time that I have been and each time bar one the service has been awful. We waited a very long time between courses in the 2 hours that we were there we only had main course after having to cancel the dessert becasue we had waited so long. The restaurant was not even that busy so there was really no excuse for the delay. There was no apology and the staff almost seemed annoyed by our request to cancel the course after we had waited 40 mins for it to turn up. I have given this restaurant the benefit of the doubt because it is local so we were willing to give it another try but after this visit we will definitely not be going back and would not recommend it to anyone else.

This is now a mountain range restaurant/pub and is refurbed in the style of an alpine lodge (skis on walls, sawn log-ends) but I think quite well done. Although mainly a restaurant, also sells cak ales (Bombadier + 1).

The food is good - and worth travelling for: one of the only places that does hot rocks (400C lava stone with your choice of raw meats, dips & rubs to cook in front of you - and very good too), fondue also on offer. Good varied menu with fresh fish special and other dishes.

Not quite sure if the previous posters are quite in tune with the pub trade now - this pub is now a roaring success, and is busy most weekdays with an pretty affluent and varied crowd. It's also rapidly become a magnet for office/brithday parties so probably best to book.

Anyone who can make a pub work in today' climate deserves praise, and this place delivers in spades in my book. OK its probably not the corner-of-the-road local it once was, but it a success. The staff were all excellent and attentive on my previous 5 visits, and the food was really good. I think they also do a loyalty card

I'd very stongly advise a visit - highly recommended and we will be back.

Try for yourself before taking previous comments as gospel - opinions are free.

Interesting that 'cheryl' loves this place and feels the need to post on urban spoon the same day. Insider ?! This is not the best restaurant in the area. And thats by a long stretch - i eat out regularly. Try the Thai next door - always BUSY and well PRICED. Or you could try Pizza Express in West wickham - two pizza for ten pounds , search in google for offers or their website. This place , on my genuine visit was certainly tacky on fit out. The staff were under utilised due to slow trade so looked bored. Will feedback in 3 months. If its open !

I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! By far my favourite restaurant in this area. Any opportunity I can I get the family down there for some delicious nachos and pizza! Have been down to see the live music on a sunday and it is amazing. Wonderful atmosphere and incredible food. Already excited for my next visit!

this pub is all style and no substance. It looks nice , tho a bit chintzy. The food offering is a joke - basic pizzas are more expensive than Pizza Express !

the steaks are extortionate as well - they start at about 16 - this is a quiet suburb of bromley its not exactly clapham or chelsea !

as the food is its selling point and due to the stupidly high prices, its alas looking like a failure in the making.

the staff look bored as hell and i cant say i blame them as its very quiet. Even the manager - think his name is gavin seems fed up most of the time.

Id give it another 12 months before its up for sale like so many other pubco leases these days.

Have a look at urban spoon or any other food review websites to understand why this is not worth the trip.

Oh yeh , the mussels are from the local supermarket - they had obviuosley run out and noticed the manager rushing as i parked up - they were disgusting & shrivelled as i treid them before - i now know why.

So - if you like your food fresh - dont come here !

Hello to all, I am pleased to announce that we are the new managers of The Coney and shall be opening in December. We are part of a small chain called Mountain Range Restaurants (mountainrangerestuarants.com) and after a full refurbishment of the site we will be opening our doors to both day and evening diners and relaxed drinkers. Food will be served all day every day. We plan to creat an inviting and pleasent atmosphere and a really positive venue for the people of the area. We look forward to seeing you all very soon at the new Coney.
Many Thanks
Gavin and Imogen.

"i happen to be a man of the age of 32 thank you. and i am quite happy to have my name put by my comment unlike some."

Then one way or another you a clearly a liar - your profile claims you are female and 67. Probably mrs Pikey?
thevogon - 30 May 2008 19:06
i agree the coney is a nice pub. not many customers which i find really weird as it should be busy every night.

the landlady and her husband are nice people and i do not think they look or act like "pikeys". if this was the case the place would be full of them and it is not.

i have eaten there a few times and the menu is really good and so is the food at a reasonable price.

the comment about it not being cheep is a bit much as the beer here is far cheaper than the pubs in the high street at west wickham.

i would like also to say there are no need for personal insults on this site as i agree that it is not meant to be about some ones revenge page.

i happen to be a man of the age of 32 thank you. and i am quite happy to have my name put by my comment unlike some.

i can only assume that this person who keeps making insulting comments about the owners are barred from the establishment for being as we can see stupid.

i thought this site was for reviews on a pub not a chance for idiots to slate people. i have used this pub for nearly a year now and have noticed as by others that the owner not only tries to keep a frienly child environment but she also does alot more for the community than most of the middle class surburbia residents.

other pubs offer a service of drinks, food and the normal you would expect from a pub, but this place offers more. how many landlords look after thier customers as previously written by other users.

i would suggest that this site looks carefully at the people using and abusing it.

I just noticed the comment below is from a 67 year old woman, lol. No wonder you like the Coney...

In summary, No garden, crap for kids. Rough and nasty inside with ripped seats. Managers are undesirable / pikey types as mentioned below.

No decent looking girls ever seen dead in here. Definately not recommended as a pickup joint.

This pub used to have the saving grace of a few pool tables but now have replaced them with a rather pathetic restaurant section installed.

There are far nicer pubs to go for a meal locally such as the Railway in West Wickham, or the Pickhurst in West Wickham. Cant see why anyone would go to this dive to eat. Especially not with a family.

Basic selection of beers. Not cheap! Not even the locals proping up the bar mentioned below were around when I last visited - place is deserted.

In summary there are far nicer pubs round here. For Kids / family / food try the Pickhurst. For quality girls try the railway (Also great food), For a bit more relaxed with some girls try the Swan or the Crown!

A scummy dump run by a couple of rough old pikeys, the land lady is an ugly miserable old boiler and old enough to be the grand mother of her 'boyfriend' - who looks like he is fresh out of a caravan site with an collection of Pikey style gold sovereign rings on each hand.

This pub is well known as the local dive with the bar usually proped up by a few local alcoholics. Generally otherwise devoid of customers.

There are far nicer local pubs such as the Railway in West Wickham, or the Crown in Shirley. Give it a miss unless you enjoy drinking with low life.

nice pub, stopped off after work for a quick pint. friendly locals and good beer was just what the doctor ordered. also had a hot pie from the hot oven, great!!

should be more busy for a pub that offers everything for the locals. wish i lived nearer as would make it my local for the evenings instead of a couple on way home.
anonymous - 17 Aug 2007 10:40
i visited the pub the other day and the pub is ok. need refurbishing, the food is of a gd quality but could b better. the beer tastes normal the could be a better range of lager as there is only 2 types of beer on pump. the staff r ok culd be a bit more friendly lookin as they hardly smile. the resturant look loverly as it is new n fully refurbished. nice large tables n leather chairs
anonymous - 30 Jun 2007 11:13
have to agree with last comments, food is good fair priced and all staff friendly.

had good experience here not like some other places local to this i could name with thier high quality decor but low quality service and food.

simson1903 - 15 Jun 2007 16:28
had mid week meal here from new menu, had fillet steak and husband had the ribs. was incredible, nice crisp salad meat cooked to perfection. the fillet was larger than you get at most places and a wide choice of potatoes. the ribs were huge the largest i seen. my husband could not eat them all and they fell off the bone. had torpeedo prawns for starters and husband had chicken wings. sadly not have room for the pudding as portions were pleniful but saw other customers that looked wonderful.

price was really reasonable for two of us two courses each and round of drinks only came to under 30.00 and we had most expensive things on menu. average cost of meal was 7.00 will try the roast as everyone who has had it gives good comments and if it is anything like our meal we had then i know we will not be disapointed.

went here for a sunday lunch as read previous reviews. best i have had since me mums god rest her (dont tell the wife) good service friendly staff and landlady who made an effort to talk to everyone between serving meals. very child friendly and high chairs supplied for the little ones. all the kids recieved lollies from the staff for being good.

lovely decor just finished and fresh flowers causing a nice aroma and atmosphere. pictured in bromley news also i noticed with good right up. will go again soon, oh and noticed that if you not fancy the full traditional roast with five veg! they also offer a roast salad, this had roast meat various salad roast pots and coleslaw. yum yum i will try next time.

all should try not be dissapointed 5.95 adult 3.95 child home cooked dinner, choice of four meats served with five veg fresh prepared. no pre packed already sliced meat and frozen soggy veg like i get almost everywhere else i have been.

not able to stop talking about it to all my friends and family. meet us for lunch here on a sunday and enjoy the experience we had

went here and enjoyed myself. nice surroundings, good food, music not too loud, beer tasted nice, staff clean presentable and smiling. other customers friendly. nothing like its old reputation or previous comments made saying bad things about it. will recommend to others as food good value for money, and for a change a good traditional menu.

had to see for myself as had contrasting views given. visited this pub on a sunday afternoon. had lunch which was the best i have ever had for a meal out. it was just as my old mum would make all freshly cooked with real veg. the portions were more than i could handle and i have a large apetite. but a smaller size was available for a silly price. my pint of fosters was great served by friendly staff. the pub was filled with families and i saw no louts swearing at the bar like said by previous comments. there was one area of seating that was ripped. i made a comment to a couple who were sitting there and they said that once the new area was finished being made into a restaurant they were going to be removed and new put in. i took a sneaky peek at the restaurant and was impressed the customers who i was speaking to had told me the owners had done all the work themselves and had just finished the new pool area. so it was evident that all the pub was being done up gradually. so the toilets were the only thing left, they were clean and tidy, the hand dryers worked and no smell was evident. so i have to agree with the earlier reviews this was a nice residential pub, good food, drink and company. and those who said otherwise are just a bit to quick to judge.
anonymous - 4 Apr 2007 00:05
Well the seats are all riped, tv's dont all work, Prices of drinks are going up all the time. Theres hardly anyone ever in there, and the few that are, are locals!

On a good note the staff are very friendly, and they have 3 nice pool tables.
anonymous - 1 Dec 2006 16:19
My experience was completely different. I went in on a Thursday night. It has about six twentysomethings swearing loudly at the bar and was generally unwelcominmg. Once we got our drinks we found the padding on the seats had been ripped out, the tables were scummy and the beer wasn't too clever either. I changed from Fosters to San Miguel and they tasted the same ie not very pleasant. Oh yeah the toilets stank and the hand dryer didn't work. They did have some toilet roll to dry your hands on. All in all a grim place to be.

visited this pub and had to agree was a nice feel in the pub. everyone was laughing and as i approached the bar not only was the staff member called arnold polite and friendly but so was the customers who i stood next to whilst waiting for my drink. i found that if you wanted company people would talk to you. if you wanted just to chill out that was fine to. there was all sorts of customers present. the early twenties playing pool and chatting, couples sitting having a quiet chat and the regulars sitting at the bar.

it was a time warp in terms of manners. no lout was shouting the odds but all the customers including staff were polite to everyone including me. i felt really chilled when i left.

i have visited other pubs in ww but have to say they are either pikey pubs where you feel on edge all night or the decor is dingy and other customers look at you as if you should not be in their pub.

at the coney this was not the case. this will be my regular pub. it has everything i need music, football the game of pool if i fancy but most of all good company and food.
