user reviews of the George Hotel, Henfield

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Having had pleasant experiences at this pub in past years, we popped in on Friday evening to see if the negative reviews on here and elsewhere were justified.

THEY WERE. The place was busy but there were so many people crowded by the bar who seemed reluctant for us to get served so we gave up and fortunately discoverd The White Hart up the road.

Well - they've gone (1st July 2011) and the board outside reads "Under New Management". Let's see if the newcomers can make a better go of it than the last lot...

The George has recently received a 'commended' award in the Morning Advertiser's Great British Pub Awards - goodness knows how. It never feels welcoming, food has a poor reputation and the main bar clientele seem to be very drunk people leering at you or looking for a fight.

i have to agree with trevelyan about the manners or lack of them in regaurds to the the landlord and landlady.(richard/gavin???dont know he's real name&terrie) they are never there in the bar and leave the day to day running of the hotel to the staff who do their best,....they also keep getting shot of their best staff......1700hrs to1900hrs is the only time you see gavin&terrie at the bar drinking and passing judgement on there staff and locals...if they keep this up they will have neither...

This is apparently a four star hotel! The service is certainly not four star. When we arrived we were left ages waiting to check in and eventually told to come back 'sometime after 2'. Eventually when we did check in we were told our card details were being retained in case 'one of the towels went missing'. Nice trusting welcome! Then, to make matters worse, we were informed about a party in their function room directly behind our room which would go on until 12. We were not told about this when we booked 2 days previously. This would have prevented us booking there and, in my opinion, was quite deceitful. The party was loud and did annoy us. The landlady seems indifferent and a bit rude. I stay in the Lake District in 2 star guest houses at less than half the price and have a better experience. Don't stay here.

Im Sad to say that there is no Henfield pub (at the time of writing, March 2010) that is worth eating out in, all the pubs are slightly worse than they were a few years ago, its sad but true.
Value for money seems to have gone out the window in place of standard pub grub and greed(for money not food).
A real shame... drive down to Shoreham, Marlypins, royal soverin etc great value for money roasts and lunches, let the greedy landlords of Henfield have their cake and eat it themselves

Our biggest mistake was not turning around when we found out there was a party of 27 in the bar area. We decided to stay as we'd travelled a fair distance.

We decided we would all share a baked camembert for starter and then Sunday roasts and fish pie for main.

Drinks were delivered slowly, one at a time, by teenage girls with no idea.

We were informed about half an hour later that they wouldn't be able to provide the camembert as the 'party of 27' had taken all the oven capacity. Ok we thought, let's cut our losses and just have our mains.

Having waited 45 minutes and nothing to show for it, I enquired as to what was happening. The terse reply was that is was 'on it's way'. We were given complementary drinks to appease us and we had to persuade them to give us some bread to keep us from fainting. This arrived as doorsteps of bread, begrudgingly hacked off the loaf (not as hacked off as we were!).

We eventually received the roasts 1 and a half hours after ordering, still no fish pie. The roasts were covered in a thick, sickly gravy and the meat was very poor quality.
The fish pie arrived 10 minutes later and was tepid in the middle. I returned it and eventually got a hot version but it was barely edible being far too salty.

When we challenged the disgusting food and treatment we were told unapologetically that others thought it was ok so it must be us.

I can in all honestly say I have never been treated so badly in a restaurant before and hope never to be again.

I cannot emphasise enough to avoid this place under the current management.

Visited for about fourth time this weekend. The new manager was helpful and welcoming.Pleasant small garden in courtyard. Food-wise, fish and chips were fresh and tasty and good value. The men appreciated the Harvey's Sussex beer and their better halves enjoyed a well - chilled sauvignon blanc. Will go back next time we are in the area.

This pub used to be under the managment of Mike Bingham, it was fantastic value for money (food) and people used to come here to eat from Brighton Horsham etc.
Its now sadly gone down hill as far as value for money and the landlady thinks shes running the hilton.

I asked her about hiring the function room once and she said " this is a hotel, not a village hall!"

Bad attitude lady.

We were looking for somewhere to have lunch, no cheery salutation from the man on the other side of the bar, we were completely ignored. When a female member of the staff served us it was more like she was doing us a favour. There were several pensioners having lunch otherwise the place was empty, not really surprising, perhaps they know something that escaped me. My beer was in very good condition but I was glad to leave and I will not be returning. This establishment would be more successful with better management, it’s well placed, a decent size and has car parking. Not suitable for children.
