user reviews of the Portman Arms, East Chinnock

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Closed up now but has signs on it saying will reopen again as the "Wooden Top inn".

Whether this actually happens remains to be seen as there is no sign at all of this pub reopening in it's present state.

Any updates on this one?

Hadn't been in this pub in a while. It used to be good, but has gone downhill under the new management. Now seems to cater to a much rowdier, unpleasant crowd - we made the mistake of going when they had live music. The beer was unexceptional, the barmaid was slow to serve, and surroundings looked lacklustre and a bit grubby. Can only assume that the glowing reviews below were written by family or friends, or maybe they were from when the previous owners were still about. If you're in the area give this one a miss and continue on to West Coker. There's a nicer pub there.

We'll give the Portman Arms a rating of 2 just because we're not totally heartless.

Went there for a drink one evening. seemed nice enough. Barmaid was friendly. Didn't try the food so can't comment on it.

Oh dear, called in here for lunch. Plenty of nice signs outside including one which said "a warm welcome and atmosphere"

Well there was no warm welcome, just a grumpy very scruffy barmaid who looked like she'd just got up!
No atmosphere, it was dark and chilly.

We had a meal, but it was just average, the ham was obviously the last and they'd just shoved a lump of it on the plate.
Can't see this lasting.

this pub has now been taken over by a new couple who have completely re-furbished the place. The food here now is brilliant with a good selection on the menu. I stayed in one of the bed & breakfast rooms which was very clean. I would recommend this pub now as it is very clean and the whole staff have a very good attitude - not like the previous lot who did not seem to care about their customers. The real ale is kept very well and the shelves are fully stocked showing this place is now actually taking off. The landlady in particular was very pleasant and cooked me a great full english breakfast. Good luck to them in the future.

HOW HOW HOW HOW... has this pub got a rating of 7.5?
I stopped in for a swift pint while passing. The gormless barmaid was playing pool. I had to wait and wait until she had finished before she decided to do some work and serve beer to customers (lazy cow). The beer (Hobgoblin) was served through a swan neck and diffuser (this is Somerset, not bloody Yorkshire) so it tasted bland. Altogether pretty hopeless.

WOW WOW WOW WOW...Was passing through East Chinnock April 2010 and stopped in at this place for an evening meal. Anyone wanting a superb bite to eat should definitely visit this place. All the food is of a really nice quality. Everything is home made including the deserts and it sure shows when your meal. I had the Pie Of the Day and it was amazing and so filling I actually couldnt get through it all. My wife had Mushroom Stroganoff, again home made and it was to die for. The deserts, well they are just something else. What a refreshing change too not only have all the main meals home made but the deserts too. My wife had sticky toffee pudding and custard and I had Lime and Tequila Cheesecake again absolutely superb. These guys really have got the food down to a T. I would say it was probably one off the nicest Meals out we have ever had and so unexpected from a village pub. Put this one on your must visit list..............`

Excellent family pub, good traditional pub food at very good prices, friendly helpful service and very relaxing, I would recomend the Portman Arms over any other pub, exactly how a village pub should be.

Des & Kev have made a lot of changes since they bought the pub in 2008. You can see their full menus on the East Chinnock Village website. Theres a Regular menu, Sunday Carvery, a breakfast club, take-away meals, Live Music and more.

Used to be a good pub but it's gone downhill of late. Last time I went in it seemed to be the hangout of the village teenagers.

I like the pub. The beer is fine and they do food too, but I've not eaten there myself. Landlord and landlady do a fine job, welcome the punters and provide live entertainment on occasions.
