According to the barman a new lot have been running this for the past 3 months. There has been a significant re-build, and a shift up-market in menu choices (didn't eat, but "pancetta and rabbit" led the menu). It is dominated by Wadworth beers, with Hop Bine available. The decor is now a little more "fake oldye worldye". Family friendly, with several tables seating young children. But I do feel it was a bit of cheek to charge 2.00 for Nescafe stirred into hot water as coffee, even if it did include a chocolate. Service a little slow, but acceptable. Now 5/10

This pub was taken over by a new young lady publican in March 2011. She is assisted by her sister who is a skillful chef. This is a delightful village pub, which has a dubious track record of previous poor performance, which the new proprietor is determined to correct. We spent the evening there while staying overnight in the village en route to Devon for a short break. We ate in the restaurant and had the dish of the day, warm chicken and bacon caesar, with nice fresh salad, a portion of chips and warm bread rolls. This was a good quality, appetising meal, good portions, at a reasonable price. Everything was done correctly and to a good standard. Other people staying at the same guest house as us also ate there that evening and reported favorably on their meals. The staff and the local people were all very pleasant, and friendly. The toilets were clean. There was live, but not over intrusive, music in the main bar. Overall this was a very enjoyable evening out. The negative reports on your web site are no longer appropriate, they dont apply to the present management. I think your readers can safely be advised to give this pub a try.

Apart from the fact that my food took one and a half hours to arrive, when it did it was not worth the wait. Unluckily for us the Landlord decided that we would like to talk to him, rather than to our friends, so as well as being hungry we were bored too. Won't be going back. We now know the reason why, the chef, who was wonderful, is no longer there. Therefore the Michelin recommended section on their website is no longer current.

Went to this pub the other day and the food was awful!!
I think the Chef(if that's what he calls himself) needs to go back to college to re-train!!

Outstanding country pub. It ticks all the boxs: great location, fabulous interior, friendly engaging staff, wholesome well priced food and a personable landlord. In addition they have a good selection of wines & real ales and are genuinely very dog friendly. If you are looking for a pub that oozes English charm and a country welcome this is it.

A friendly welcome is assured at this great traditional rural pub.
Pleasant surroundings, log fires, a good selection of up to 4 real ales and wholesome food awaits you.
The regular No. 2 Salisbury-Devizes bus passes the door.

I had originally set out visit a pub in Wylye but found it to be closed so I headed towards Salisbury and took the turnoff into Great Wishford having noticed a sign at the side of the road advertising the Royal Oak. I'm very glad I did!! A friendly welcome from the barman, a selection of 3 real ales from Youngs, Palmers and Harveys and an interesting chat with the landlord who, like me, loves his fishing.

Great cosy feeling to the place, 2 fires and soft jazz/swing music in the background Interesting food menu with handwritten special boards tempted me but I was having dinner cooked for me later so will eat on my next visit. They advertise themselves as being dog friendly and indeed there were 3 well behaved pooches and their owners enjoying their lunches. Definitely one to come back to...... soon.

I visited this lovely little pub, in Great Wishford about two months ago, after Id been for a nice walk with my dog and fancied a drink. I was greeted by a roaring fire and great atmosphere. The landlord was very friendly and had no problem with my dog coming in. I enjoyed a pint of Harveys and noticed a great selection of other ales.

I returned there again recently and had a very good dish of homemade fishcake and chips. The restaurant again like the bar has a great atmosphere and I found the service great.

I hope to visit the Royal Oak again in the near future, its a great end to a walk, I do also recommend visiting the spectacular Grovely Woods just behind the pub.

Oh dear - this great pub has changed hands a few times recently. The last time I visited it was welcoming and had an unpretentious restaurant serving good english fayre. I walked in a few weeks ago (September 2009) and was greeted by the sound of jazz. The sniffy barman had a big fat silver tie on and seemed in two minds about letting us sit in the restaurant. He eventually acquiesced but having seen the unimaginative and overpriced bar menu (lasagne, burger etc) and the resturant (which was empty) menu we lost our good mood and our appetite. Resturant menu consisted of usual gastro garnishes to trad dishes to bump up price. We had a drink and watched somebody's buger arrive on a trendy platter with a few chips in an individual bucket.

The Royal Oak is in a great village and its lay out is ideal for being a friendly local for a convivial drink and a nice restaurant if you fancy treating yourself. Unfortunately the people currently running it have forgotten this. It doesn't matter how much you tart things up (I heard somebody ask for a bag of crisps and they were offered 'sea salt and crushed black pepper') it's still a pub. People pay top whack for the ambience of a restaurant - not for the dubious pleasure of cramming themselves along a wooden bench even if the frozen chips do come in a bucket. The biggest turn off - as always - was snooty bar staff. Where does that attitude come from? It ain't Chez Bruce, fellahs. Sure the locals must be biding their time until somebody with a handle on the current recession reality takes over. We left and went to The Swan at Stoford. It was still overpriced gastro food but at least the welcome was warm. It's an entry level requirement if you want people to come back and pay through the nose.

This pub has changed hands, of the three real ales available barely one was drinkable, as a non regular the welcome was frosty. I will contact the local CAMRA branch and pass on my view, this pub is a serious embarrasment to the Good Beer Guide.0/10

Absolutely top class + imaginative food at pub prices and well very kept real ale (usually 3 hand-pumped beers). Excellent traditional fare on Sundays, but visit on other days if you want to see what the chef can really do.

I now eat here fairly regularly. Good pub atmosphere and superb food - a sort of modern take on British ingredients. Worth a visit.

A friendly village place. Good choice of beers (Ringwood Brewery and others) and a very good atmosphere. (Wife says the loos are very clean, always a good sign).

We ate at this pub today. It was excellent and quite reasonably priced. The landlord was very genial, atmosphere and surroundings were very pleasant. This will be one of our regular haunts.

Quiet pub with terrific range of real ales and very friendly staff. They had Bateman's Rascal as a guest ale when I was last there. Highly recommended. Didn't get a chance to sample the food but will set that right when I get back from Saudi Arabia next week.
