please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I enjoyed a very nice lunch today with some work colleagues. Great menu, so give it a go.

McMullens are a decent brewer, I opted for the Country, and found it to be in excellent condition!

My first visit, may not be the last!

As previous comments reflect, this pub is now in the McMullen chain. Still had on tap, Country, Cask and a seasonal. The beer was in good shape and the pub itself had changed little since I was last there and it was a Chef & Brewer. I really do like to spend a Summer afternoon at the Heron... the deck on the lake is excellent. Had soup of the day - cream of broccoli; could have used a bit more blending but it tasted good. A dish of olives also went down very well. Best of luck to the Staff - hope the change goes down well. I see no reason not to return and enjoy myself there on those warm Summer days.

Date visited: New Years Eve

Food: Excellent, tasty & good sized portions. Downside couldn't hear any music whilst we were eating.

Service: Very good indeed. Friendly & helpful staff.

New Years experience: Average. Disappointed in most of the music (although to be fair the older folk would no doubt have enjoyed it), but my main bug bare was the bad introduction to the New Year. Poorly executed count down (my watch said we were early!) & then no Lang Syne. Would it take make much to put a radio on, get the count down & Big Bens chimes? Even better would be to project Ben Big & the New Years fireworks going off onto a large screen. Because of this anti climax it felt like any other night & expensive one at that!

This is my local, but I didn't visit regularly because the beer was not good - a range of 4 or 5 boring regional and national brews generally in poor condition. Also the food could be variable. However, now it is in McMullen's hands things seem to be looking up. Overtly, little has changed from the previous ownership (Chef & Brewer) and I believe it is still the same management team. I haven't eaten here recently, but a couple of pounds seem to have been knocked off the menu choices. The last couple of times I have visited there have been three beers on - Cask, Country and a seasonal, and they have generally been in good nick, although I would prefer to see AK. Although it is still food oriented you now feel less out of place occupying a a table and just drinking, and one time I was there with friends we were left drinking up until well after 11 without any pressure from staff to move on. This is a great place to sit outside in the summer, overlooking the Fleet Pond, hopefully the Heron will maintain its new higher standard.

Popped in for a business lunch expecting not a lot and to my surprise found three beers from McMullen - Cask Ale, Country and AK, the latter was in decent condition. McMullen beers are rarely found in these parts. Service is good, unfortunately the food is remarkably average for the price.

As I'm moving to the area in Sept I decided to pay a visit Sunday August 23rd. Really really nice pub. Super "beer garden" more or less on the lake itself. Good food ( service a bit slow and a little pricey ) but I guess you get what you pay for.
I disagree with the earlier comment about it not being ideal for a proper session. I thought the inside was very cosy with exposed beams and lots of little dark corners to while away a few hours over some scoops..I'll deffo be back soon

Lovely location by the lake, perfect on a summer afternoon. The food is around the ten pound mark but is a bit more upmarket than average pub fayre and that's what you pay in Rip off Britain. I've eaten a few times and not had a problem with the quality.

good food but prices way too high

Food pub. Not a place for a 'session' at all. We've taken the in-laws there before and it's been decent enough grub. Nice to sit out by the lake.

Had an excellent roast dinner here earlier this year.
The restaurant was very busy, but service was quick and the food good.

Their high prices for what I would call basic fayre have put us off visiting more often.

I have just returned from a meal for two at Heron On The Lake - the 4th time that we have 'given them another chance'as we were dissatisfied with the service and food. But again, although the menu boasted creative meals we were shocked at the cheap quality of the food, given the prices.
The meals were aroumnd ten pounds and consisted of reconstituted watery chicken with diluted Dolmio. Having said that the staff were lovely and agreed not to charge us. I will say that the late dressing - when it did arrive was not lemon and chive, but mint sauce with olive oil. It ruined the meal (and my throat's still burning from something in it!) but they were good enough not to charge for it. Our conclusion - the staff were slow but friendly and fair, but the quality of the food was majorly poor and over-priced. I feel like they took me for a fool and there will be no 5th chances.

I went there last October with my wife and two kids and a friend with his wife and two kids, And thought the food service and beer was excellent. Top marks to the waiter who I think was Australian, He could not do enough for us. Definitley go back again.

Have been to this pub on and off for a long time (even from the Dakota days!) and the food does seem to yo yo in qualitybut never been that bad.
Seems to have turned into seating and table service now, however went last Sunday and i can safely say i had one of the nicest fish and chips and the girlfriend had the nicest fillet steak we have had in a long time. Service was a little slow, but friendly and was worth the wait. However I recollect being annoyed before that you need to order you vegetables separately...or you could be eating a lump of meat on its own!! Do try though...assuming the chief stays!

Our food and drink were both lovely, but we felt either invisible or unwelcome most of the time. We loitered at the "wait here to be seated" board but nobody came over. At the bar it seemed that for ages we couldn't even get eye contact - let alone a drink.

Later, they put all the parasols down on the decking where we were seated well before last orders. We had two more rounds after they did this, although we had to go around to the front door to get to the bar because they'd also locked the patio doors into the pub! I came away feeling as if this is a place that doesn't care much about its customers.

Just returned from visiting this pub, after reading the reviews on here I was looking forward to some good nosh.. Not to be I'm afraid, whoever said it served the best burger has got to have been joking, I had the burger and it was crammed full of so much stuff other than meat it tasted horrific, my friend had the sausages and mash - fantastic if you like your sausages undercooked served with smash and bisto! I would have rated them 0 but the girl was friendly so I gave the 1 for her. It is a nice setting for a drink, and if you like harvester type places then I'd say you'd like the food, but if you do like your food to taste good and not to come from a packet then go elsewhere; we passed a Macdonalds on the way home and commented on the fact that we would have got a better burger there!

Superb food and drinks choice in a nice location. Only fault is service with long wait for food more often than not.

Lovely place to spend a summers evening!! and the food is good too!!!
chick28 - 24 Jul 2006 01:54
I wouldn't classify this place as a pub, it's somewhere to go if you want to eat, certainly not somewhere to go just for a drink. Fantastic location but really let down by it's insistance on attempting to be a resturant.
Dr.Headache.Rushing - 7 Jul 2006 15:24
One of my favourate pubs. In the summer you can sup Pimms while watching the swans swim by. In the winter you can chill in front of one of their many open fireplace. Food is fabulous!!!
kazaddress - 7 Jul 2006 11:13
Really nice and friendly staff. Great food (possibly the best burger I've ever eaten), and in winter they have a lovely cosy fireplace. Just wish I lived within walking distance.

I had a good pint there once . . .
