Went a couple of weeks ago with my sister, her boyfriend, my girlfriend and my 10 year old nephew. We all bought drinks and sat down to choose meals. We then ordered. Two of the meals were incorrect and had to go back but we thought no problem, mistakes are made. My sister had ordered lamb on the bone which half way through she found to be raw. Now there's a difference between slightly pink and raw but the chef didn't seem to think so. The lamb was sent back and when it arrived back it had obviously just been placed on the grill for a few minutes. She carried on eating only to discover the meat still red raw in the middle. We asked the waiter to send it back and he asked if we'd like to see the manager (who just happened to be the 'chef') He came out obviously in an argumentative mood and said that he had slow cooked it for a few hours. After my sister stated that it didn't matter how long it had been cooked for it was still raw, he began arguing (in front of other customers) told us we could have the money back for the one meal but 'that was it' and eventually told us to drink up and get out. I've never heard such a rude reaction to customers. I thought the customer was always right! Not the best way to run a business as it's around 60 he will never see again!

A bit over-rated for both food and beer quality if you ask me. You can get better Pedigree across the water in Town...

Recently taken over by Jen + Rich, a great couple who are giving the sump a real injection of enthusiasm. A great pub to sit outside at, the patio is impressive and the atmosphere both in and out is always good. The bands are always great and the tuesday night quiz always packs the place.

Formerly The Royal Oak. Tarted up in a refit early 2005 but it could have been done so much better, I'm afraid. Service is friendly from the junior members of staff but the licensees themselves are a pain and will readily leave customers standing at the bar while they chat with their mates. Re-named at the recent re-fit according to its local nick-name. "The sump 'ole" refers to part of the mill workings next door, I believe. Local people object to this re-naming. It has a large open area on the bank of the River Trent overlooking a weir and a lovely historic mill building, Peel's Mill, which is currently being beautifully restored as flats and business units. Cellarmanship at this pub is only average, I'm afraid. My local when I was growing up, and I worked here 1989-1992.
