Bright and airy. More a cocktail bar than a pub, although it did have Doom Bar on. If you like the Slug and Lettuce formula this is for you (but not me).

Service is usually decent here and the food is alright but the prices for drinks and the lack of selection really drags this pub down.

A dreadfully overpriced pub , ridiculous really (r they in central London), God paid less for a beer in the Savoy bar! Awful ripoff of a place. A very lazy pub with idle staff. Shame really as nice location. Have to agree with others i'd stretch myself to beat 0/10, a real ripoff and staff r so poor. Company summer party seeks location??? This place is a big NONO!!

You'd know, boy.....

Fancy shagging a slapper in the loos? Then this place is for you!

I had a pleasant day out walking around the shops and visiting the cathedral with the family today and unfortunately this was the only pub that I visited (damn it) as I had the nippers in tow.

Its a Slug and Lettuce with the usual dcor and selection of draught lager. I spotted a Bombardier pump on the bar, but I didnt get the chance to see if it was hand pull or draught. I found the two barmen to be very friendly, although they both got an order wrong not that it was that important.

Theres a plasma screen that was showing muted Sky Sports News to give way to some daytime lounge music. Im sure the music changes during the evening as I noticed the extended opening hours (midnight Thursday and 1am Friday and Saturday) leading me to believe this place is popular with the youngsters - Like all Slugs!

As Redharvest has mentioned it is a place for buggies and dining mothers drinking coke, at least in the daytime although the wife did have a shandy and I discovered that the Guinness was pretty good!

If I return to St Albans with the clan again I'll probably return, but I would steer well clear if with mates or on my own.

No proper beer, one for Mum's with pushchairs after coke and food.

This pub was previously "Casa" & before that a community arts shop. Its main claim to fame is that it is (or was) owned by Simon Bridbury, who succeded me in the property management department at Savills in 1984. I have walked past it twice a day every day since it opened, but knowing it didnt sell real ale, never been in. I fought my way in past the 2 bouncers to ensure todays pub crawl was complete, expecting to make a swift exit on being told they had no real ale. But HOLD THE FRONT PAGE!!! three handpumps were clearly visible on the bar, though none of them were diaplaying a pump clip. The bar staff explained - REAL ALE arrives next week, though no details of the beers are yet available. Further research required

absolultley charmless with no real ale to boot, one for the girls and boys....

This place is not good, two people at the bar I got there way before the other person, yet the barman serves the other person! I left after that. Been there in the evening too, and you have to fight through the oversized ego's to get to the bar!
TheMuz - 3 Apr 2008 14:14
Diabolical chain-bar craphole with absolutely nothing to recommend it. Might appeal to sad ex-yuppies who think expensive means it must be good.
matt_k - 10 Jan 2008 16:49
Drink prices are above average and doesn't sell Bitter

"Soulless" or not, I like this place because of its very easy access. I just trundle up the ramp and Bob's your uncle. Many other pubs have steps and goodness-knows-what to climb: exterminate!
dalekemperor - 7 Aug 2007 09:37
Service OK, food OK, good selection of wines and lagers but no beer. What you'd expect, really. It's not bad, but I agree with the "souless" comment.
Exit Bluebottle, in the direction of the Peahen.
enterbluebottle - 26 Jun 2007 11:38
Exactly what you would expect, pretty souless chain bar full of people wearing the same clothes. Service slow, music loud enough to deafen, food okay.
Sherminator - 14 Jun 2007 20:41
Terrible, terrible, terrible, soul-less dive. Awful atmosphere, decor and drinks. I hate it.
Skinsio - 11 May 2007 23:14
This bar is casa with a pound added to every drink and seemed a bit pretentious. Left ONeils and popped over to slug and was approached by 2 grumpy bouncers that I can only describe as Frankenstein and Jabba the hut! Cheer up boys!
rockafella - 18 Apr 2007 18:28
Not too bad, older crowd than when it was Casa, still can't pour a decent pint of Guinness.
RashersOKane - 2 Feb 2007 15:56
full of posers and women that look like they were picked off a Soho street corner! far too expensive and has no atmosphere of its own only one created by the brutish thugs that throw testosterone around the place and turn it into more a fight club than a pleasent drinking venue at the weekends.

Always hot on the scent of something new, I popped into the new S&L last week. First impressions are that it's hardly different from the old Casa, but in fact there are some improvements.
Good points: Air conditioning (hourrah!), food available seven days a week from 1200-2200, plus breakfast 1000-1200 Mon-Sat, and a slightly more ambitious selection of drinks than Casa had.
Bad points: Muzak in the Gents' loo (still a long trek to the bogs, by the way). Also some over-zealous barstaff. One barman followed a group to their table and asked for their order immediately - no time for them to ponder.
Still, if you like this sort of place you'll love the St Albans Slug & Lettuce - a lot of hard work has gone into it.
timkholman - 24 Jul 2006 19:54
After an expensive refurbishment, the old Casa bar has been turned into ... something very similar! Bound to be popular.

This place has now closed.
Will return soon as The Slug & Lettuce.

Has anyone seen the brunette manager that works there? Was in there recently and she is gorgeous.... and friendly too!!! I didnt see too many flies either - all in all a good place to drink!

Bars aren't really my thing, but I popped into the Casa yesterday as part of my Getting To Know St Albans campaign. It's a huge place, and although I didn't notice any dirt or smell (see below), there were a couple of flies buzzing around.
But the barstaff were very good, and one of the girls wittily dealt with my crap pronunciation of Cruzcampo, a light and tasty Spanish beer.
At around 5pm customers in suits started to arrive, braying and ee-awing at full volume to display their obnoxious personalities to as many people as possible. So I scarpered.
Overall - Casa is Casa, wherever you are.
timkholman - 25 Mar 2006 08:58
Aint that bad and to be fair the blonde barmaid - I think her name is Charlie, makes it worthwhile!!!! SO fit! Fair enough used to be better and does tend to attract the scumbags, but not a bad place to drink on a busy night!
TonyTinnit - 25 Mar 2006 04:03
This used to be nice ... before it was a BAR ... - i.e. not a pub. Why oh why Anne Robinson do they keep having to encourage trash into our lovely cities - hate it - don't go there - better off getting some tinnies and sitting on the grass infront of the Abbey!
The_Dawg - 8 Mar 2006 01:17
oops meant to say it could do with a lick of paint.
tullster - 17 Jan 2006 15:45
What has happened to this place. Was in here last Sat lunchtime and the place is dirty and smelly. The route to the toilets reeked of stale smoke and generally the place could do with a good lick or pain and a polish.
tullster - 17 Jan 2006 15:43
Casa? Bars like these are ten a penny in any large city. Great place for a bite to eat and mid-week drinks. Come weekends it's packed with posers...buy a drink...sit on a sofa...relax..and then go to Lloyds bar around the corner!
dirtyarab - 13 Dec 2005 19:38
Casa, hmm. Worth a visit to look at the women sometime. Personally i very rarely find someone interesting to talk to in this place. It thinks it is a trendy London bar. Actually its a posy pretentious hole with not much going for it. Its certainly dressy though, and some of the woman are worth looking at. Dont expect much soul from any of them though. Its pretty arrogant but its not as bad as some. If you're with a big group of 'trendies' then you might be ok. On Friday a DJ attempts to play up front dance music on Friday but it doesnt add much. The door closes at 10:45PM Fri/Sat.
hjr2000 - 30 Oct 2005 17:16
Blonde barmaid is hot
anonymous - 7 Sep 2005 14:07
Big place, more for the mid 20's and above crowd. Good as the chavs cant invadde it. All in all pretty good.
Vavavoom1 - 4 Jun 2005 14:38
Really big venue. Busy at weekends, but due to its size it doesn't really seem too crowded. Fantastic dj's here on the weekends too.
