Orange Tree, Havering Atte Bower

user reviews of the Orange Tree, Havering Atte Bower

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub has had a lot of different owner/managers for the last couple of years BUT it is now a great pub. The landlady is a gem....friendly and welcoming and the food and beer are well kept and reasonable. Give it a go! It was going downhill fast but is now well worth a look!

Pretty local to me and not a bad pub at all. Good food and nicely kept beer.
GazzaMod - 24 Feb 2010 16:19
Love this pub, although it doesn't look like this anymore, its been totally done up.

I take my parents along who are in their early 70s and they really love the fodod

This is a pub where you have a drink and maybe some food if you like. Nothing fancy, it's just a normal friendly pub that is improving more and more as time goes on. I've definately had many good nights in there and will continue to do so.

I think everyone needs to chill out a little bit and those who want to spend their time slagging off this pub should try moving on to pubs more worthy of it. I know for sure that there are some disgraceful pubs out there that you could give harsh reviews too.
jamescarr1111 - 20 Feb 2009 15:45
it seems I'm not the only person to doubt the veracity of these claims; thanks for the support biker, chris, zaphod etc.

the reason I posted my original comment pedro is so you can see for yourself how ridiculous the 4 previous comments were. to paraphrase zaphod:

4 very similar posts all 'bigging up' the new management. All made by new members that joined, posted exactly 1 review, then disappeared...

you've been rumbled, get over it.

like I said, risible.
DavidWaspnest - 19 Dec 2008 13:20
Dear oh dear...this could stretch on but my intention is not to bore people looking for particular pub reviews with drivel...so I'll make this my last response to posts with me as the main topic or those directed at me.

Not touchy-feely Biker, just standing my ground (for what it's worth given that this site appears to attract many who gain more from arguing than reviewing). Apparently the purpose of my post was known more by others than by me. Given that some of you apparently know me so well I feel guilty that you weren't on my Christmas card list.

ChrisP87 - I wont ask the question because I wont reply but your problem is either with me, 4% lagers or mass production of any lager. If it's me then sorry to have offended you. If it's 4% lager then sorry your taste isn't for 4% lager. If it's mass produced beverages then, once again, sorry these aren't to your taste. As I'm certain that this pub isn't providing what you want then I'll assume that you wont be going there. I say 'assume' because I do not know you, given that fact and the fact that I've said what I wanted to say, I'll now leave you to get on with your life and wont be troubling you with my opinions anymore.

On a 'pub' related subject (sorry to veer of topic) if you believe that any ale or lager, mass produced or otherwise of any ABV, is of an unchangable, similar, high standard across all pubs then you either have no taste or you don't drink. Also, as you are waiting for me to explain, it might surprise you to know that line-cleaning techniques and frequency, along with cask and barrel storage temperature and time, play a part in quality of taste. Although the Orange Tree Becks Vier may not be better than that in 'every other establishment in England', I know it's of a cleaner taste than many other pubs I've been in. I hope that satisfies your curiosity.

pedro007 - 18 Dec 2008 15:46
Pedro I'm still waiting for you to explain in what particular respects the Orange Tree's Becks Vier is better than every other establishment in England which sells this 4% mass-produced lager. Perhaps a distinctive aroma, a bit like that which surrounds your posts?
ChrisP87 - 18 Dec 2008 14:47
I make this brief as I've better things to do...unlike those of you to who this applies....

Zaphod - No idea what a 'sock' posting is but I'll live with that as I'll live with not getting the point of your posting???

ChrisP87 - I think you're a stupid as you want to be. Thanks for pointing out that the Orange Tree is a pub NOT a hotel - first class observation.

Biker - A little more construction in your criticism BUT completely wrong I'm afraid (please see original reply back to DavidWaspnest) I'm not management nor am I staff, I'M A CUSTOMER.

Beersupper - The shame I feel at being 'sussed out' at favourably reviewing this pub will not play heavily on my mind nor have I, nor will I, 'cry' about it, believe me. Give this pub or any other 'a miss', you're a grown man (I'm guessing?!) feel free to do what you want.

Get lives guys. This is a 'pub review' forum, not a 'disagree with, or discredit, someone elses review' forum. I'll leave you all to your own devices now whilst I go and have a beer - maybe in the Orange Tree or maybe somewhere else. Bye bye.

Stopped off at this hole when making my way to the local Labour Club. I think i'll bypass it next time as the conversation at the Labour Club is 10 times better and I recieved a warm welcome, even though I am a staunch Conservative. Anyway, back to this disgrace of a lager barn - there was 1 real ale on (I think, couldn't see any others) - I sampled it and it was vile - I took it back, and the disgruntled barman swore at me. I decided to cut my losses and leave - I needed to use the gents however, eventually found it (no signs), got into the toilets and slipped over on a puddle of urine. I left in disgust. AVOID THIS PLACE.

<sigh>
Sharp - 5 Dec 2008 16:34
Well done guys for sussing pedro007 out.Now pedro007 if you get caught out take it on the chin like a real man and stop crying. When in the area will miss this pub out i think.
Beersupper - 5 Dec 2008 14:41
PMSL at how obvious some of those 'reviews' are. How stupid do you think we are?!

note to Pedro - phrases like 'the lager was first rate' and 'The new management seem to go that extra mile to please you and it makes the world of a difference!' are going to raise suspicion on here. Its a pub not a hotel for christ's sake.

ChrisP87 - 5 Dec 2008 10:20
Like DavidWaspnest I smell a rat. Nothing for a year on this place then all of a sudden 4 very similar posts all 'bigging up' the new management. All made by new members that joined, posted exactly 1 review, then disappeared. Apart from pedro of course that got upset for being found out.

Sorry Pedro, sock postings like yours are as obvious as a f*rt in a phone box. Now run along.
Zaphod - 5 Dec 2008 10:09
DavidWaspnest - I have asked for your post to be deleted on the basis that it has nothing to do with the Orange Tree and is totally wrong in it's assumption and accussation. What's risible is the effort you must exert in seeking out pubs with more than one good posted comment and then insinuating that they must have been written by the same person because they have a common sentiment, err...that generally means that the subject matter deserves the comments, nothing more. Do the drinking community of the UK a favour and keep your conspiracy theories to yourself, there's a good lad.
pedro007 - 5 Dec 2008 09:35
eh? seems like the same person has been writing the 4 reviews below this one. I quote:

'I honestly did not want to leave as the whole experience was reminiscent of the good old days when you just 'ended up in' a pub and were treated like a good friend. The wife and I will be back and we will be taking friends'

Risible.
DavidWaspnest - 28 Nov 2008 18:02
I used to drink in the Orange Tree many years and loved the laid back atmosphere and tranquil setting but had not been in there for a while. I was passing a month or so back and popped in with my wife. I must say that the experience was everything you could hope for in a pub!!! The lager was first rate (particularly the Becks Vier!), the menu was varied and the food (Sunday lunch) was reasonably priced and delicious. The pub is now under new management and the staff were attentive, friendly and professional. I honestly believed that the days of the off-the-beaten-track pubs were over...Iam glad to say I was wrong! I honestly did not want to leave as the whole experience was reminisent of the good old days when you just 'ended up in' a pub and were treated like a good friend. The wife and I will be back and we will be taking friends...
pedro007 - 28 Nov 2008 17:53
I used to be somewhat of a regular to the Orange Tree and to be quite honest it was a state. Recently though ive heard its come under new management and its done it the world of good, i wanted to see what all the fuss was about so me and my girlfriend popped in for sunday roast. Its taken a massive improvement the food it outstanding and looks well professional the staff are friendly and down to earth and generally the pub has a new and relaxed homey atmosphere to it.
Marc100 - 4 Nov 2008 22:33
I've been back to the Orange Tree a few times since it has been under new management and there seems to be a much better atmosphere, more organisation and more attention to details that were lacking with the previous owners. The food has vastly improved and I recently enjoyed a sunday roast in there. The new management seem to go that extra mile to please you and it makes the world of a difference!
jamescarr1111 - 3 Nov 2008 10:47
I popped in there the other week, and it is now under new management!!! The pub has completely turned around!! I went in there a few years back and thought it was awful. Now thepub looks very homely, the food is fantastic..i ordered steak and chips with a salad. The salad was fresh and the meat was cooked just how i like! They have alot more staff, and it seems to be running very well now. The service i receieved was nothign short of lovely, and my husband didnt complain about the beer being stale or sour. since new management this pub is completely different... and il definetely be going back!!!
buda - 28 Oct 2008 11:44
Used to be a nice pub serving decent food but in the last few years has gone downhill mainly due to incompetent staff, food is now well below average, your lucky if get a clean glass luckier still if there is more than one ale on, and if it does`nt taste of disinfectant you should definitely buy a lottery ticket on the way home.
12degree - 18 Oct 2007 23:40
this pub is under staffed and that has a great reflection on the quality of food and ale, service is not as good as the mawney arms!!
anonymous - 9 Oct 2007 02:55
Very pricey for its drinks. Offers a great food menu though.
Its a nice place to pop into in the summer as it has a lovely beer garden.
Nice quiet location.
morrello - 27 Nov 2006 17:08
i have just crawled up the hill and i wish i had seen the previous comments made, the beer was awful, stale and sour, and as for the price i thought it was a giant rip off, if that is all they have got to offer in this pub they can stick it where the sun don't shine
whitewitch - 11 Aug 2006 18:41
how to get ripped off the hard way!! 1/ find Havering Atte Bower, 2/a little more dificult this one, find the Orange Tree, 3/walk up this very, very steep hill (buses only go up there one an hour!), 4/ order a pint of Duchars (that is a great ale normally) find that it is so awful you can't drink it, tasted as if it had been in the pipes for a year, 5/ and last but not least get charged 2.90 for the privelege. when you hear people say never again, well this is one of those sayings. NEVER AGAIN
anonymous - 10 Aug 2006 16:04
This place is a rip-off.2.90 for a pint of Deuchars IPA at its worst.Didn't try the food but if its anything like the beer they can stick it.
apa - 10 Aug 2006 08:08
its a nicely decorated smallish pub, but gets very busy at times, so can be very hard to get a seat. quite good selection of drink, and nice clientel in there. friendly staff and nice food, altho id say overall the whole place is a bit expensive compared to other pubs, but a nice place for an drink every now and then.
essjaydee - 28 Feb 2006 23:54
used to use this pub alot a few years back as with the trees out the front it hid the wagon so could slip in and have a few quiet beers without being caught , popped in a few months back with some friends and its still a good pub , but wouldnt spend too long here as not my cuppa tea , the beer was good and the service was good and friendly

romfordir - 7 Feb 2006 12:32
