New Inn, Crossback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
A good sized, prominent pub adjacent to the A38 this seems to be much improved from my previous visit a few years back when it appeared somewhat down market and rough around the edges.
The main lounge has a traditional and cosy country pub feel with carpeting throughout, black beams on the ceiling, stone fire-places at either end and a mustard and salmon colour scheme. We visited on a Sunday lunchtime and main bar area was full to capacity with diners and there was an extensive black board menu hanging above one of the fire-places. The fireplace at the other end had a large leather sofa manoeuvred in to it and a plasma hanging above, which was showing the Grand Prix.
Up a few steps is what appears to be some sort of function room, and there were a couple more tables squeezed in under the stairs. There is a good sized beer garden to the side of the pub which includes a couple of kid's climbing frames and is a pleasant spot with good views of the hills towards Cheddar, although the noise from the road is a little intrusive.
Beers on tap were Moles Landlord's Choice, Cornish Coaster, Otter Ale and Box Steam Brewery's Royal Box. The solitary cider was Thatcher's Gold. There was also a good choice of wines displayed on blackboards hanging above the bar.

On the 20th of April 2012 around 6pm we visited the New Inn at Cross for an evening meal with friends to celebrate my birthday.
Out of the four meals we ordered three were very disappointing to say the least! My wife ordered the battered fish and home made chips unfortunately the pre-frozen fish was totally raw in the middle and was sent back with my wife deciding not to have it reheated so went without her meal.
My rib eye steak (priced at �15:95) was stone cold on arrival and was sent back to the kitchen, the waitress returning some 15 minutes later, when everyone else in our party had finished or given up on their meals.
My friends gammon steak was all but raw in the middle and he gave most of it to the pubs dog. His wife had the Sea Bass which was, to be honest, the only meal of the four that we could say was ok.
All in all a very poor experiance and one we shall never repeat again at this establishment and would advise any one wanting a decent meal to avoid the New Inn at all costs.
Also on a footnote the exact same round of drinks was �1:45 more expensive than the Lamb Inn half a mile down the road in Axbridge.

Stopped at lunchtime.
I had steak, which was very good; herself had ham eggs and chips, which she pronounced good (quite why she didn't pronounce it "ham eggs and chips" is beyond me)
The Betty Stoggs was in fine fettle,as was the other guest Wickwar B.O.B.
I didn't try the regular ale, which is Otter, but I can do that whenever, can't I?
The chips aren't what they were, but what is?
Friendly, efficient, pressed barmaid/waitress/receptionist/etc.

Another little gem of Somerset,I had the ham eggs and, thick chips. must admit it was well cooked well presented and good value for the money,The service from the smiling barmaid was excellent and efficient,she was greeting, serving, waiting, checking all on her own.I was well pleased and enjoyed my pint of mermaid bitter also. My only comment would be that the musty smell on entry,some of the furnishings torn,and an annoying fly but,this was a hot day.apart from that i would say ditch the burger and pizza side of the menu.all in all i'm still giving them a 10,well done...

Cooking spot on. I agree with the earlier comment about the chips, although I think "dying for them" may be rather extreme!
Absolutely gorgeous little lass waiting at tables, always smiling, and slightly reminiscent of Tina in Coronation Street!
They seem to have an ever-changing list of real ales too, so we shall return (particularly if they have a new butcher supplying their steaks!)

Nice country pub which serves excellent food.
Also good beer-garden to rear with pleasant view of countryside.

We are regular customers of this pub. It is the place to go for us as a couple to go to eat and also to take family and friends. The menu is varied and caters for all tastes and children. We have been going there for two years, and always had good food, good beer, good wine and good company there.
Can recommend the chicken wrapped in bacon, 10/10. The liver and onions - the gravy is superb - 10/10. Their roasts are excellent value. All produce used is local.

great pub. fantastic service, food is all homemade and huge potions of it too. cask mark registered so the beer is spot on. lovely atmosphere. the chips are to die for. well worth a visit.
