This pub has been ruined by the supposed makeover. What was a welcoming, country local is now a sterile "gastropub". Large TVs and sofas dominate in place of the traditional fittings. Good value homecooked food has been replaced by expensive, posey nosh.

Food is good but expensive. There were 2 Dunham beers and a Tatton one on handpump yesterday - can't say I liked the Dunham one, although I've liked their other stuff, but the Tatton one was good (and also expensive).
The pub is virtually unrecognisable from before.

great food and the place looks great but not the comfiest indoors. Lots of staff milling around. Outside area with covered log fire seated section looks great for winter. Food good

This pub is now open again. I didn't go in, so am unable to review it, but just thought I'd let people know it's back in business

It had absolutely nothing to do with the smoking ban. This was a planned closure, sale & planning application by new owners which has taken over 12 months to complete.

A real shame this! 11 years ago I went with my girlfriend (now missus) for a meal- it was amazing & the place was packed to the rafters because it was a REALLY superior place. Over the years I have been going an watched the place go downhill. The new owner had just started & was ringing the changes: I went quite a lot last year but went today to find it boarded up!! What a sad testament to our declining country that a place like this becomes flats. Like the 'Bleeding Wolf' if some of you remember what happened there.........shame on you developers.

The Rope is a fantastic old building but it has a poor history of change and inconsistency. I think the last 10 years can be attributed to transient landlords/managers usually existing for 12 -24 months.
The possible root of the problem is that it a leased managed house whereby the �tenants� have paid a small initial investment and then are tied to buy the beers/wines from the brewery.
As a remote quiet pub with an ever eroding reputation there just isn�t the margin for the tenants and the brewery. The situation for the brewery isn�t a disaster as they have the equity of the building and every 12 -24 months another tenant and therefore investment. The result for the customer is a rollercoaster of instability and inconsistency as new tenants arrive, have initial enthusiasm and subsequently leave due to low turnover and high costs.
It just shows reputation is everything and unfortunately after so many years of this situation this fantastic old pubs reputation is possibly thrashed to death.
Having said the above there have been some very good tenants. Peter (the chef) and his wife Jan, fantastic and it looked like they were turning it around at last. Then of course a fall out with the brewery and they left. The current landlord is also an absolute gentleman but with the pub up for sale and the end of the contract due it�s the same situation.
It appears even the brewery have had enough and as the building is up for sale I assume they are just cashing in an investment. The current unconfirmed rumour is that Deckers group (Bowden,Sale water park etc) are interested in buying.

posh area, looks a really nice place but a bit quiet on Weds eve.
Curry night; �5 curry and a pint, pale ale was fine but curry was shite. not enough meat...
loads of rice but can't moan for the price.
Think I'm gonna start rappin'.....need sum drum 'n' bass.

Friendly pub, barbecue area out the back with kids play area, beers fine, food is home-cooked but middling - slightly over-priced for the quality. Was nice and spacious inside at Sunday lunchtime, so we'd probably go again just to avoid the crowds!
