Small one bar pub that was fairly busy late on Monday afternoon as they were preparing for a wine-tasting evening. Ales were Williams Brothers Birds & Bees, Inveralmond Ossian, Orkney Dark Island, Caledonian Deuchars IPA & Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted. Cider was Addlestones. Nice enough pub.

Only dropped in for a swift drink and to check out what time the live music started but overall impression very good. Friendly staff and a good crowd. How often do you see a guy go out for a smoke and leave his wallet to guard his pint? Not where I live anyway.

Small, busy, friendly, a good selection of ales in fine condition served with care and respect. Only sorry I could not stay longer, but time was running out.

Hard to pass by-sometimes wish it was in a quieter street but hey-ho. Take a wrong turning going to the toilet and you are in the band.

Long narrow bar with a good ales and whiskies available.

The genotypical pub. Folk music, well-poured Guinness and cosy atmosphere, day or night. What every pub wants to be!

This is what its all about - old school pub, folk singers, plenty of chat and the drink flowing.

Theirs little space, its chaotic but its friendly as it comes .

Everyone smiles. You feel the single malt warm your throat and listen to the music swelling up from one of the tables, and as you look down beneficently at a terrier called Archie that looks up at you whilst opening your packet of nuts (that's you not Archie), you are smiling as well. Always a pleasure. One of the finest bars in the land.

My uncle (teetotal) used to live opposite Sandy Bells and used to complain about the noise at night. My message to him would be...don't try beating them...grab a beer and join in...great pub.

This was a lovely pub. I hear an old mate from the 80s, Big Jim Knight, sometimes played here, so popped in. Nice beer, proper old Edinburgh pub, clean, nice staff, recommended.

small, simple decor - and average looking place. why is it so good then? just a good atmosphere and you can fit in easily and have a good chat. not really the place if you're a large group and you wanna get sompletely plastered. but to set the world to rights with a good mate whie getting slowly more 'opinionated', it's perfect.
most nights they have a folk band that is great and the atmosphere can't be beaten when they're playing. it's very mixed - old boys having a game of chess or some nice young ladies having a chinwag. it's charm is that it is so small but but this can be a problem, although if you've got a seat then you don't care. a proper pub with proper people.
