Nice looking pub but one of those edinburgh pubs that shouldn't have so many handpulls. Not great cask. Have a bottle instead.

Good honest local. The Barony has an excellent reputation for beer with interesting guests including Stewart's ales. Perhaps my one grumble is that the selection is sometimes all light, golden ales, but really, it's a minor one. Good value food and friendly staff.

Busy friendly pub with good selection of ales and whisky. Staff are very nice indeed.

Enjoyed supping two pints of the ever-excellent Doom Bar Bitter served by friendly, efficient staff in an early evening atmosphere of jollity and frivolity. But those toilets...

So sad to be doing GBG pubs in Edinburgh, and being refused admission to this pub in opening hours because we did not have a ticket for the Fringe event that was taking place in the pub.

Good looking New Town pub adorned with large mirrors from old breweries and a nice tiled wall, although open-plan. The atmosphere was pleasant and the fire is a nice touch in winter. Several ales to choose from, in fine form on my visit Didn't try the food but it looked good. One of the better pubs in the area.

Late comment from August. Enjoyed my Davenports beer brewed a few miles from home but a new one for me.

Interesting interior (especially the tiles), pleasant enough pub with decent beer. Nice to pop in for a quiet beer while in that part of town.

Visited just briefly walking back up towards Princes Street for another Fringe event. Wadsworth HB, of which I had but a half, was unremarkable but it was certainly a notable interior. Can't say I noticed a smell!

Visited August 2007. Nice pub, friendly bar staff. Decent real ales. I got a half pint for free, as it was near the end of the barrel, but the beer still tasted good! Did not eat.

Went for pint and a read of the paper on a recent visit to Edinburgh and I have to say I was hit by the smell when I walked through the door. I wouldn't say it smelt like wee, more like stale beer. Anyway, I soon became immune and enjoyed a couple of pints of Deuchars which was very good. It is a classic drinkers boozer and the interior is amazing but I wouldn't take the wife there for lunch.

Stunning interior. L-shaped room - the entrance and the bar are on the long side; the short side has a fire place and side window. There are three very large pub mirrors, and beautiful decorative tiling on the lower half of the walls. Veggie bangers and mash and veggie haggis, neeps and tatties. 7 casks - nothing unusual, but all solid stuff.

The beer range, the character, the atmosphere, the uniqueness of the place, and the veggie haggis lift this above the ordinary. It's a must visit place. Top pub.

Another reviewer has mentioned the smell in this pub. My wife and I visited it the other evening (having read its entry in the Good Beer Guide). After we walked through the door, we paused short of the bar and I said, "It stinks of wee." My wife said she was thinking exactly the same thing, so we turned tail and went elsewhere. There is no excuse for this lack of basic hygeine and housekeeping, and it is a shame that a pub that in other repects would appear to be excellent should let itself down in this way.

I had the pleasure to call at this fine pub on 27th April 2007 during my first visit to Edinburgh.

Visitors to the Barony are treated to an ornately tiled interior, some exquisite ceiling mouldings, a bare wood floor and two fireplaces on which to feast their eyes.

Caledonian Deuchars IPA was superb - ever better than it tastes in London. Also available (on 27/04/07) were:

Caledonian 80/-
Youngs Bitter
Black Sheep Bitter
Guest beers
Weston Traditional Cider

Live music is performed every Sunday y "Bedford Falls" and occasionally by "Radiohead". A great pub, GBG-listed and worth a visit.

A great pub and beats the Cask and Barrel, a few paces down the hill, by a mile. Great selection of beer (and a frightening selection of cider) the gents toilet cubicle is one of the cleanest and well decorated in Edinburgh. Highly recommended proper pub.

I wonder just how many customers appreciate some of the surroundings in which they drink. If they dont, then its a great pity in this case. Wood floors you can take as read but the outstanding feature here is the wonderful half-tiled interior wall and I dont mean like your average bathroom! No one building a pub today would consider such an extravagance, including the deep Georgian windows, intricate moulded ceiling and decorative bar back (gantry), not forgetting that Edinburgh pub speciality, the mirror. Two top the fireplaces and four more proclaim Scotch whisky and Youngers brewery so big, if you hung them at home, they would surely demolish the wall. Up to six well-kept ales complete the experience.

Appearance as a good, old Victorian-style bar, with good range of beers, and free cheese and biccies with a bottle of wine. Ruined, however, by the rancid smell that permeates the whole bar, and by the off-hand and indifferent staff.

A very good boozer in a relaxed gay-friendly part of town

A medium sized bar. 7 beers on cask. Fine tile work. Relaxed atmosphere on a Saturday afternoon.
