user reviews of the Grove, Hammersmith

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

With nicely prepared food, very reasonably priced beer and friendly staff Grove is my absolute favourite in Hammersmith and Sheperd's Bush area.

Ideal for Sunday lunch, try their seafood menu.

Highly recommended.

I recall the old Hammersmith Grove - must have been c. 15 years ago when my brother and family moved to a house nearby - and it was ok, run-down a bit. 'The Grove' reborn as more a resto than anything else didn't attract us at all.

I saw the handpumps the other evening, so dropped in. The Fullers London Pride was a bit tired, the Harveys Sussex Bitter a lot livelier. Overall it was fine, and service friendly and welcoming.

This is a restaurant and not a pub. Only London Pride on and not at all well kept. The food can be hit or miss depending on who is cooking.

The downstairs is 3/4 restaurant although the floor staff don't seem to have a problem with you just drinking on some of edge tables if it's not busy on the food front. Screens upstairs but can be hit and miss as to getting served up there so if you're in for sport be prepared to be going up and down the stairs.

Food's lovely but as has been said, it's more or a restaurant anyway.

My boyfriend and I hit The Grove regularly for dinner and are never dissapointed by the menu, service or food. I am a particularly big fan of their tiramisu!

While the meals can be a bit pricier, of all the pubs in the Hammersmith/ Shepherds Bush area this is by far my favourite in terms of consistently high quality food and serivce.

The service is good, the beer is fine. But it's not at all what I'd call a pub. It's a restaurant which borders on being a gastro-pub, at best. If you're into pubs, then definitely steer well clear. In my book, no matter how good the drink is, nothing can make up for not being in a proper pub, and The Grove most certainly isn't one of those. If you're after food and a more restaurant-esque experience, though, you'll probably be happy here.

More 'gastro' than pub...

The Grove has been one of my "locals" for over 10 years and I have seen it develop from a spit and sawdust establishment into a friendly, well run business. The food exceptionally good value for the price and the staff is welcoming and helpful

Seems this place hasn't had a review in ages, which is odd. The Grove is a strange place, not quite a restaurant, but not really a pub or bar. You might think that would make it a Gastro-pub, but because of the way its set out I'm not sure it qualifies as that - most of the downstairs is devoted to dining and isn't really a place you'd sit and drink pints. The outside area is very nice in warmer weather. Food wise, a couple of my friends adore this place, whilst I think its only around average to good for the price. Never really had any issues with the staff, and I've always found the beer drinkable. Certainly a good option if you're in Hammersmith.

It's my local. Really nice place - nice to sit outside in the summer (though not enough heaters) but pretty expensive - even for London prices.

If you like the whole gastro-pub experiences, then they dont come much better than this.
Food is exemplary...I can highly recommend the swordfish...but they do change the menu so regularly that you might not find it
Dont come after dark if youre looking for a pub....

My experience of this pub echoes some of the other comments above - good food spoiled by a moody and unfriendly bar manager! I used to go alot but they've lost my custom because of his attitude.

I think its a bit sad that people rate this as though it was a pub. I would think that 80% of their business is dining. The food is excellent, and it is a good local watering hole. If its been a while since you've tried it go back again - you'll find the beer has improved, the service is on the way up and the food couldn't get much better. If you are a local (as I am) it pays to support your local businesses and should you have any complaints it might be more appropriate to address them directly. I am sure you will find this will get action.

I have been to the Grove many times and I agree with comments that the food is excellent. The Grove apparently changes menu twice daily and serves only fresh produce, organic where possible, as they claim. Their wine list is excelent and suited for all budgets. Lager and ale selection is suited for modern gastro pubs. The staff is cosmopolitan and I have never had a problem with them, although I got to say the main manager has got a bit of Italian temperament but he is actually a very nice guy. There are a number of very pretty waitresses who are always helpful and possibly could look intimidating to a lady who comes with a boyfriend or a husband. Unlike most conventional pubs the Grove is actually rather large, very airy and bright place with high ceilings. I agree it's jazzy but on a smooth side and it's hardly ever loud so you could effortlessly enjoy a conversation unlike in most pubs. So I do think that the Grove is an excellent gastro pub if you are food lover and it's one of rare places where you could week in and week out have sizable different dishes without changing the pub.

It is my local and could be so much better. All the reviews say the same thing so its a shame they haven't got it right. The food is good but the service and attitude of the staff really poor.

Once we had managed to order from the illegible hand written menu, the meal itself was actually very nice (if not a little overpriced). However the night was ruined by the staff. They were not only rather rude but were constantly hovering over our shoulders making us feel like we just wanted to eat up and leave. They then had the audaity to add on a completely unreasonable service charge. I would not come back here purely due to the staff - which is a shame - because this could be really good eating place.

Sorry to disappoint you but this is not a pub but a restaurant with a small bar attached. All known modern pub cliches were detected when I visited: stripped floor boards, old school desks and chairs, blokes in black polo necks drinking tiny bottles of obscure foreign lager, inability of staff to pour a guiness, change put on tiny metal trays rather than in your hand, jazz on the PA. Yawwwwnn! Good food though.

When I visited this place i had some of the worst service i have ever had. Food was fine but couldn't get a beer to save myself. And at the end they got pissed off when i decided not to pay a service charge, which i though was unneccesary as i had got up repeatedly to get my own drinks instead of being served at the table as promised. Got such black looks from the staff that i will never go back - word is this company is expanding, god help whichever pub they take over.

This is ... not really a pub. I'd go for 'restaurant with a bar attached.' And given that I'd go for the Priory in Brook Green over this place.
